The Jan 08' Wired magazine picked a Denon as their Editors choice for AVR. I forget which one and left the mag at work, but I believe they had it priced at 1K.

But think of it this way. If you have issues, Denon can log into your AVR and troubleshoot, including adjusting settings, up to and including completely resetting your system on line. Not to mention being able to go each zone with your laptop and adjusting settings wirelessly. How about using your Ipod from any room in the house.

Some cool stuff coming from Denon IMHO...

That sounds like the 2308, or the 2808. The 3808, IMHO is the best bang for the buck, unless you are huge into Itunes. I did an install last week that had two Ipod docks with a 2308 IIRC.

I made a mistake J'. It was a 43xx and not 1K. Over 2K. The Pioneer Elite (91something ranked a very close 2nd and that listed at 1K.

Hey, I just saw this over at AVS...$1200 with all the decoders built in and 4 HDMI Inputs...

Good alternative IMHO...

Well, I've decided to give an Onkyo TX-SR705 a try. If it performs better than my previous Pioneer Elite unit, I'll keep it. If I can't tell any performance difference, I'll replace it with either a Pioneer Elite VSX-91TXH or a VSX-92TXH.

Stay tuned...

Peace...

Nope. I’m still on the fence about everything.

Nope, I'm sitting in a lawn chair looking at PH sit on the fence.

I plan on pulling the trigger sometime in the next couple of months. Gotta pay rent, ya know.

Peace...

With the Pioneer, whatever sub was connected WAS working as some drum beats caused the sides of the TV frame to vibrate a bit. With the Denon, none of that occured almost as if the sub was disconnected or turned off or something. The person in the room said when they switched, they switched surround speakers but not the fronts.

The Denon sounded great as well. When I got up to at the settings on each receiver, the Pioneer was set to "EXT. Stereo", which means it was using the external decoder (or the analog inputs from something) and I think it was in a stereo mode. The Denon was set to a "dts surround" mode. I'm not sure if this, alone, accounted for the difference I heard or if it was simply a difference in the receivers. I plan to go back and see if I can get a movie demo on both receivers so I can see how they sound with their decoders in action.
Well, I finally got to audition a Denon AVR-3808CI at a Magnolia store (standalone, not in a BestBuy) the other night. The salesman put on the dts #9 demo DVD and we watched a Master and Commander clip. Damn, it sounded GREAT! It's been so long since I've heard my old Pioneer Elite receiver in action that I didn't have a strong reference point but in general, I didn't hear anything that made the Denon "stand out" from what I remember my Pioneer receiver sounding like. I mean other than the demo room having more speakers for a better surround experience.

I still haven't replaced my receiver yet but I hope to do so later this year.

Peace...
