My Pioneer Elite VSX-24TX A/V receiver is dead
That's right, it kicked the bucket yesterday. It worked just fine yesterday morning and then when I got home last night, I fired it up and got NO sound AT ALL.
It didn't even indicate it was receiving any kind of signal from either my DVD player or my cable box. ![]() I tried to play some test tones to see if it was the digital inputs or something and got no sound. ![]() So, I'm now in the market for a replacement A/V receiver. *Sigh* I guess I should be happy but I'm not. Just something else I've got to deal with. Peace...

Onkyo 905 (and the rest of the new Onkyo line) = king of receivers currently IMO.
Integra DTC-9.8 if you want seperates. The functionality and sound quality on these units cannot be beat. I would go with one of them as a replacement. Highly recommended! P.S. - I'd also open up the box and check to see if a fuse is blown. If so, thats a simple and easy part to replace.

That sucks Tom.
My 26TX kicked the bucket last year. How do the new Onkyo's compare with the new Elites? Are there any reviews out on these yet? I'm trying to dump my Yamaha in order to get one of the new receivers and I was leaning on getting the Onkyo 805.

Sorry to hear about your Elite their Tom. At least now you have the chance to buy something new and be ready for them new High Def sound tracks. For whenever you jump on board one (or both) of the formats. They have PoRn ToO
So ad dme to the list in suggesting the Onkyo line of receivers. The 705 should do you fine

Damn! I was hoping it wouldn't work and you would buy mine from me. Especially since I just had it rigged to put "BEEOTCH!" into the audio stream at 5 minute intervals.
Anyone want a 24TX......cheap? Like, REAL cheap? |

Well, congats on NOT having to replace your receiver. Maybe you should start a fund for getting a new one anyway, just in case that doesn't work next time.
Did you ever look into that adapter we were talking about the other day? j

Wow, this thread is an emotional roller coaster.
Tom is sad, Tom's reciever is dead. Tom starts looking for new receiver, Tom is a little happier at possible being future proofed for a while. Tom listens to Drunken Villager, Tom is happy once again, though not future proofed any longer. Tom once again watches some porn with audio. I dont know if I can handle these moments.

![]() Well, I unplugged it again and let it sit over night. Then the next morning, I plugged it BACK in and started to watch a DVD with a toslink audio connection to it. I heard a little bit of audio and then static and it audio dropped in/out a bit and then we out completely. I'm preparing some final statements to make at the receiver's wake being held this evening. ![]() Peace...

Sorry to hear that
Your receiver is going to need a coffin for its wake. Maybe a nice new Onkyo receiver box will do just the trick for you. As a bonus it comes with a receiver to help you out in your lose. Will it be an open or a closed box wake. I'll lay down some wires at its resting spot too

I'm glad you axed.
![]() I went receiver shopping a little today, mainly to audition some receivers. I got to spend a little time with these: Onkyo TX-SR805, even though I spent more time with the SR804. This was at a local Circuit City and the SR804 was connected to a Blu-Ray player playing a dts-HD demo disc. I got to hear scenes from a Fantastic Four movie and some music. The SR804 generally sounded like my Pioneer Elite VSX-24TX did, even though I was listening to different speakers and different audio material. I got to hear the SR805 connected to a PS3 and got to see a PS3 gaming demo disc. Looked pretty damned good and sounded pretty damned good. Pioneer Elite VSX-92TXH Denon AVR-C3808 I got to listen to both of these in the listening room at my local Magnolia inside Best Buy. Once they found the guy who knew how to operate the room, I got to audition Hotel California on both receivers. I listened to the Pioneer first and it sounded great, lots of bass and full, rich sound which seemed rather "warm" (more focus on midrange with less emphasis on the highs). This unit has 130W per channel and I don't know which speakers I was listening to. After a bit, I asked to switch to the Denon and they did. The bass I was hearing disappeared and I was left with midrange and highs. With the Pioneer, whatever sub was connected WAS working as some drum beats caused the sides of the TV frame to vibrate a bit. With the Denon, none of that occured almost as if the sub was disconnected or turned off or something. The person in the room said when they switched, they switched surround speakers but not the fronts. The Denon sounded great as well. When I got up to at the settings on each receiver, the Pioneer was set to "EXT. Stereo", which means it was using the external decoder (or the analog inputs from something) and I think it was in a stereo mode. The Denon was set to a "dts surround" mode. I'm not sure if this, alone, accounted for the difference I heard or if it was simply a difference in the receivers. I plan to go back and see if I can get a movie demo on both receivers so I can see how they sound with their decoders in action. I have no idea what the audio source was to the receivers nor do I know how they were actually connected to the audio source. Maybe when I go back, I'll take 1138 with me, if he's available. ![]() Both the Denon and the Pioneer Elite model look to be peers:
![]() Peace...

I'd take a heavy bass CD you have listened to and know inside out from your current setup. Then play it on both AVR's to see if the Denon lacks the punch it seems to lack based on your reply.
Obviously, and I'm sure you will make sure of this, make sure it's the same speakers. I know some have said Pio' lacks in the audio department but those Elites are tasty nice and I have tried Tube amps AND feel the Pio' is fine. I just wan't more horsepower and the 92' has what could be that extra push. Then again, what the hell do I know. WEEEEE!!!! |

I have NOT come to any conclusions yet and I DO NOT think the Pioneer sounded "better" than the Denon. Something was wrong with the setup. Peace...

I haven't had time to listen to the receivers again. I did some searching on "Pioneer Elite VSX-92TXH vs Denon AVR-3808CI" and found this thread.
I'm sick right now but I plan on auditioning them again sometime soon. ![]() Also, I'm not sure if I wanna spend this kind of money yet or not. Peace...

DUDE...
If you can swing it, we had a Denon training yesterday that blew me away, take a serious look at the 3808, and 4308. I know they are more expensive than the Pioneer Elite, and don't have the THX Select certification, but the networking features alone are worth every penny. besides the other features the 4308 offers over the 3808, it adds wi-fi...and the stuff you can do with it are incredible. Call me this weekend if you get a chance, and I'll go over some of the stuff I learned. j
