Onkyo TX-SR605 Humming?

I've not heard this myself, but a friend picked up the Onkyo 605 and is hearing a low humming sound. I, of course, had him check all the wires and connections, but he hears the sound with headphones as well, so that leads me to believe that it's something internal.

Have any of you 605 owners heard this or seen it reported elsewhere?

Thanks.

This hum issue, along with a separate "popping" issue, has been discussed and debated at some length at AVS forums; do a keyword search in the audio section and check it out. Warning, though: I'm not kidding about "at some length" (better take some vacation time)

P.S.: Should note that the hum issue isn't endemic to all 605s (seems random, and not even localized in certain production dates), and that a few people also reported it in the 805s (my 805, thankfully, is free of any unwanted noise). And in any event, if I recall correctly, many (but not all) people with the hum issue who didn't have a funky connection somewhere found they could resolve it by something as simple as plugging it into a good-quality power strip (i.e., not directly into the wall) or by doing an "unplug and reboot". Again, no promises for the validity of my comments, but that's what I remember, or think I remember.

Does the 605 have a torodial transformer? If it does the hum is from the current trying to flow around the bundle in reverse from a ground loop, this causes the transformer to physically rattle.

I heard of this issue through research before I purchased my 605. I do not have the hum on mine, but I have heard its really a 50/50 chance. If I would have had it I would have just returned the until until I got one without it.

Well i guess my 2 cents. I too haven't heard a humming/popping sound from my 605 unit yet. Its in a power bar with 2 other devices (PS3 and Wii) and yet nothing bad so far. I was worried about these issues before i bought my unit from the AVS Forum threads, but so far so good.
