Members here are low/mid/high end?
Just curious fellas! Just CURIOUS. <--Okay?
How do you rate yourself in the wonderful world of audio/video? It's another poll I promise to screw up but honestly, where do you fall in your mind? (being honest with ones self is an admirable trait, remember that) ![]() |

I have no idea how to gauge something like this. It would really depend on the scale. I don't have a $12K projector, but I do have a better one than, say, something you'd buy at Best Buy.
I guess given the prices of my gear, I'd have to shoot for mid. But, again, I’m not sure

I'm high end. Audiowise, I consider setups "better" than mine venturing into the realm of audio-quackery and snakeoil territory. That is not "high end" IMO.
![]() Videowise, obviously you can do better than I did with a $5k FP. But a 60" 1080p24fps HDTV is better than "mid end". So I'd say High End for video too, just not Best possible.

I said mid on the verge of High because, my Pio Elite receiver is almost the best one in their line. I hope to use that for a pre/pro and add amps to run the system, then pick up a nice pre/pro to replace it with. Then, 65" DLP, while not exactly bank breaking, it is definately better than most people I know ( Chromy, you don't count
) That I also hope to upgrade to a FP, prolly when we build a house, so I can have a theater room ![]() j

I'm modest with a modest HT. I'm low-end with some mid-level gear.

I'm Low End with some Mid or High level. This i think best describes me and my HT situation. I don't have a lot of money and have a crappy bedroom setup but i do like the equipment i have. I can enjoy the High Def formats for both sound and picture, but could always be better when you see other users and their setups.
Now if i had a better room to situate my HT setup then i would consider myself Mid level as i could make that room my own and dress it up with the movie posters/banners i get from work. Plus one day have the cool furniture setup too for big group gatherings

I don't know on this one. Parts of my setup are more mid, but what I dream of having does not have any of my current components in it so that is high to me. I would say I some mid stuff mixed with...I dont like the word low...we will call it normal.

I was simply trying to honest with the terms Sub'. There is a perception out there for many that parlays into low/mid/high. Personally, I don't think of "low" as a bad thing. That's why I stressed being honest with ones self.
Also, "high" to me doesn't neccssarily mean $$$. And damnit! Why am I doing Tom's job here? ![]() |

I said mid. My whole room only cost around 10K. That includes carpet, hardware and furniture. I have Polk speakers, a technics receiver and a 1080i LCD proj.

I don't think cost should dictate low/mid/high end.
I mean some Bose setups cost as much as some of the higher end speakers but they actually sound like low-end speakers.

Well I picked low end thinking this was just an audio question but if I had to do it over I would say low/mid level because of display. I'm seriously considering getting a new receiver so maybe I can move up in the world in a couple months.

I put mid on the verge of high end. My speakers cost more than most would spend, and the subwoofer is out of this world. My Denon reciever is awesome, but I hope to go with seperates one day soon. And now that I have the RS1 projector on the way, I can safely say I'm on the high end there.
So yeah when I get seperates I'll answer high end.

I am low mid and fine with that. I have a suspicious opinion of audiophiles and even if I was rich I wouldn't go into the stratosphere. To me is just being a victim of human greed when people tell me... "Oh the $12000.00 speakers sound so much better than the $9000.00 ones" And I'm sitting there thinking "Yeah, because you know what the prices are."
Don't get me wrong, I think I have good hearing. I'm a musician (who has protected his ears) I just don't care to pursue owning the best in everything. Sorry for going off on my little opinionated tangent, but I just can't help believing it. I will shush now. Enjoy the silence...

You had me laughing so hard my sides hurt!
That was just too funny! Of all the forums I am a member of, this one is by far my favorite! Gotta love the light hearted nature of this place.![]() Well it looks like I couldn't get out of this one that easy. Yeah I guess my setup falls into the "high end" category. I consider my Sunfire TGIII pre/pro high end, but the Denon AVP-A1HD that will soon be replacing it is really in the high end side of things. It could very well be the most technologically advanced pre/pro out there, which is why I'm getting one.I guess the main reason I've gone the high end route with components and speakers is because to my ears it just sounds better. I've owned and used many different receivers, but once I went with separates there was no going back. What's cool about separates is that you can choose exactly what kind of amp you want to go with your pre/pro. How many watts you need, as many channels as you want, ability to bi-amp/ bi-wire your speakers etc. I needed a lot of watts to drive my Martin Logans at 4 ohms, so my only option was quality separates. I now have more than enough with my Sunfire amp at 850 watts x 5 @ 4 ohms. And as long as it continues working I don't see the need to replace it. The big Sony TV was a no brainer, as it offered the best PQ out of everything I saw at the time. And is still no slouch. ![]() So yes It's high end, but there's a good reason for it ![]() Seth |

I agree, Denon offers superb sound quality and their receivers are amazing. I owned a Denon receiver (AVR-5800) before I got the Sunfire and I loved it. When you do go the separates route what would you like to get? Your soon to arrive RS1 projector is definitely in the high end of front projectors and one of the absolute best out there. That is one sweet unit! Seth |

, it is beyond incredible, best image I've ever seen. Not entirely sure on the amps, I just sprung for a Toshiba XA2 on top of the RS1 and Xmas for the family, so thinking about other expensive toys actually gives my wallet a stroke. I'm wondering about solid state vs tubes. The AMC 2030 tube amps are highly tempting, at about $500 each, only 30w per channel... but tube sound . However with solid state, for that amount or considerably less, you get alot more wattage.

That's right you did say you had ordered one last month. My bad.I can only imagine just how jaw dropping the images are from it. If I were to get a front projector it would definitely be a JVC. Tubes, now that's one thing I have not used. I know that a lot of people who use them swear by them and the smooth sound they give. I have listened to systems with tube amplifiers and tubed CD players. The sound was amazing. My Sunfire Cinema Grand Signature amplifier is all solid state but Bob Carver designed it in such a way that it offers a very close tube like warmth to its sound. I guess it's the closest I was able to get to tubes without actually using them. I guess the only negatives with tubes is low watts per channel and the nessesity to replace them from time to time (which can be expensive depending on what brand you use). When I was shopping for recievers, Sunfires were at the top of my list over Denon, but so very expensive. Thats still a route worth considering over seperates, or maybe Sunfire amps, if there is such a thing. Tube prices are generally cheap, plus I happen know a guitar repair guy who gets em cheap!

But as far as stand alone multichannel amps go, Sunfire's are some of the best available. With gobs of power available and a great design that produces nearly no heat, Sunfire amps are amazing. Like their pre/pro, their amps are a bit pricey as well. But if you look around at places like Audiogon and eBay, you could very well find a 5 or 7 channel amp for a very good price. Tubes are nice and sound great, but if you hunger for power a solid state is the best way to go. Now you could get a nice 2 channel tube amp (for the mains) and a 5 channel solid state amp for the rest of the speakers. This way for music listening you can enjoy all the benefits of that tube sound, and for full tilt movie watching, the 5 channel amp in the mix will deliver the surround goods. |
