Needing a new reciever, have questions, want to learn

Alright,

This is what I have:

42" Samsung S4253
Toshiba HD-A2
Samsung BD-P1400
Xbox 360

This is my reciever:

Sony STR-K720P from a HTIB set purchased in May 2003.

So now that I have been upgrading my HT in preparation for Monro Jr.'s arrival in January (I won't be doing much of anything after that) I am now in the market for a new receiver.

I have been looking around CC & BB and online trying to find some info on the new receivers out there, apparently you plug in your hdmi & component cables in there, something I never knew but always wondered!

I have also been lurking around these parts seeing what people have been saying about HDMI 1.3/deep color etc. I also have been wanting to learn a lot about these new digital audio formats that HD/BD have come out w/ "True vs. loseless digital sound).

So here's what I'm looking for (I will continue to do research myself in addition to any info that is passed on).

What should I look for in a receiver to get the best audio out of the new formats.

I don't want anything highly expensive. I want a new receiver but want to have enough funds saved up to get a full HD tv by next xmas.

Are there websites that come highly recommended in breaking down the new audio formats and acronyms that I see flying around here. I know Wiki has some good stuff, it can just get long winded, AVS forums are sometimes just plain hard to get through w/ all the stuff going on in each forum/post over there, plus I like you guys a helluva lot more .

Thanks

I just dug up a thread w/ the 605 featured, thanks

question about hdmi, with these new receivers, I only have to run an HDMI cable for the dvd player to the reciever and an HDMI cable to the back of the tv and will get the digital video and audio signals correct?

that would be correct, as long as both the source, and receiver can decode HBR audio. Can the HD A2 transmit HBR?

I love my Yammie, but would currently lean towards an Onkyo or perhaps a "higher end" Integra version for the extra cushy warranty. My uncle was a Yamaha guy for over a decade, but replaced his receiver with a beautiful (sound) Integra.

The new Integra DTC-9.8 pre/pro I got has to be one of the best sounding and best values in high end audio gear in a long time.

If you check his HDMI 1.3 Mega Review you'll see he has a Parasound HCA-2205A.

Ok, my reciever, intermidantely has been losing audio coming into it from the cable box. It just stops and accepts no audio, it did it tonight during lost for almost 15 minutes. The dvd audio coming into it was fine.

My question:

I was looking at the Onkyo 605 & 705 but the 705 says it only has pass through HDMI. If I read it correctly (and correct me if i mess up) but the HDMI in only processes the video and not the audio. so I would still have to run an optical or coax cable for audio.

Is there a receiver that processes the new audio formats for less then $1000?

The Onkyo 605 and 705 do accept HD audio via HDMI.

I'd look at the 805 as a starting point though, you move into a different league of amplification with it from the 605 and 705.

605/705:

805/875:

crap, I think I was looking at an Onkyo HTiB set up for that one.

I know people around here like the 605. But reading reviews at Amazon that people are concerned with overheating in regards to the 705/805. It seems to be a few and far between problem though, not really concerned about it. Just wondering if this receiver is good for the priced at this point in the game

What are some places online to look at purchasing a receiver from?

I've seen Amazon drop the 805 within $50-60 of their price for the 705 with free shipping, but you gotta keep checking since prices there flux a lot.

i"m leaning towards the 605.

Is there really any advantage of the 705 & 805 over the 605 other then additional HDMI inputs (which can be corrected w/ a HDMI switch from monoprice).

I have the Toshiba A2 & Samsung BDP-1400, will the 605 decode both TrueDD & DTS-HD or will certain players not send the signal? I'm trying to read about it but i'm not sure what they're saying about certain players send the signal as TrueDD/DTS-HD and converts it to PCM, they lose me on that.

The A2 will only convert to PCM and I'm pretty sure the 1400 only does this as well.

I just read that I can set the Sammy to send the audio over to the receiver instead of decoding it in the player itself, is that something that is preferable with new receivers and the new audio formats?

Would the Sony STR-DG910 handle all the new Blu-Ray HD sound formats?

No decoders on board for the new formats on the 910, sorry. It coould probably take the PCM over HDMI, if the Samsung has the decoders built in.

Okay, thanks for the clarification. The product description had some sound formats listed that I was not familiar with. Like dts Neo. I didn't know if any of them correlated to the HD formats.

I was considering looking into Blu Ray with help from the tax prebate, but I think I'll hold off until its a little more standardized and the updated equipment is more common.

dts Neo6 is dts' verson of PL2X. It takes a stereo source and divies it out to 5.1/6.1. Nothing special...
