Speaker Problem

Can anyone tell me why the following is happening and more importantly how to fix it?

Just the past 2 days I have been having a popping that occurs in, as far as i can tell, my front L C R speakers when i change the channel on the DirecTv receiver. It is noticeably more prominent on the HD Channels.

It concerns me that either there is a poor connection, the hdmi transfer isnt good, the speakers are getting old (purchased in 1999 JBL Floor Standing), or they are getting damaged.

Thoughts?

Popping usually occurs in the preamp, not the speakers...specially when it is all three front speakers. Do you have adifferent receiver you can try?

OR...

You could use this as an excuse to buy a new receiver

SOB better not be- I bought this receiver in January-- Onkyo 804 when it was a newer item.

although i have been bitching to onkyo about there lack of promised upgradability via Firmware

they do have a 2 yr manufacturers warranty, and after it expires a buyback program.

i do have an old 787 model from 2000 in the box, but what a pain to unhook all the speaker wire and crap to hook it up.

but we'll see.

This might help, basically whenever my TV's volume is up and I flip through channels on my Comcast HD box the audio pops no matter how the volume on the HD box is set.

Might be something like that?

That is a possibility. But I have never heard of the kind of popping described being speaker related. I have a friend that has a B&K AVR that pops when you switch inputs, and my realy old Pioneer did that.

If you have any speakers that you can swap out, it will be easier to ID the problem...

yeah, sorry.

it apears that someone had inadvetantly upped the volume on the tv, so after I lowered it to zero the popping on changing the channels discontinued.
So, i guess it was a simple fix.

One neat thing I found out yesterday was on the DirecTv HD DVR's, as they are introducing the new HD channels, you are getting a doubling up in the guide listing, which was frustrating as hell as you are changing channels to have to go through the same crap 2x.

In the menu and settings, you can select to "HIDE the SD" channels in the guide, alleviating the need to double up and only viewing HD.

Yeah.. Another annoying thing? With the new rollout, if the HD Channel does not have an SD counterpart, they charge you an extra $10 for them. That means, Discovery HD Theater, HD Net, HD Net Movies, Universal HD, and I think she said MGM HD ( ) I was rather frustrated about that, but I got HBO free for 3 months, Showtime, Cinemax, and Starz free for 6 months, and the new HD Charged credited for one year. I love free enterprize and competition

Really? I didn't know that! So, it hides just local SD channels or ALL SD channels? If all, that's alot...not sure if I wanna do that but I do admit I generally just hit HD channels. Hmmm...I gotta try it I guess since if I remember correctly, you can set up multiple "guides".

It only hides the SD channels where there is an HD counterpart, all the other SD channels remain.

So, its not that many- USA, TBS, TNT, FX (all in the 240-250 range) now only has the HD channel playing instead of having to go through 2 channels when I was changing channels up and down.

It hides both the local and the satellite SD's
