Yamaha RX-V1800 Receiver
My neighbor just purchased this receiver for $1300. I just wanted to get your general opinion on the receiver. Do you think its worth the money? If so, why? Overall opinions?

Well, that's full MSRP and I have to imagine he could've saved at least $100 somewhere. I have an RX-V1300, the predecessor by several generations, and absolutely love it. I haven't auditioned anything in some time now, but I'm sure the 1800 is great. While I'd probably lean toward Onkyo/Integra at the moment, I'd take another Yammie. They certainly didn't get a great deal, but I'm sure it will serve them well.
From a quick search, it seems that this new generation still follows the same themes. It has a generous number of inputs, video scaling, multi-zone capable, headroom to spare, has pure direct mode, etc... but it also has many things that weren't around when I bought mine. XM, iPod connection, remote for 2nd zone, HDMI, HD Audio, 7.1 (vs. my 6.1), RS-232C, etc... are things I don't have.

The Yamaha is a great piece of equipment that follows a long line of great receivers. They are very underrated IMHO, and very rarely disapoint. If I hadn't picked the Elite, I might have got the 1800...

It's definitely not worth it if they don't have a similar investment in speakers. Our 1300 is in our living room, but i do have to say that it took some experimentation to "tame" the room through arrangement of speakers and furniture.

I tried the Best Buy edition, HTR-6190B and was very impressed with it. Only $999.99 too, it went back up to $1,399.99 CAN.
When buying Big Ticket like this I go to Trutone Electronics. I will buy it, they carry the RX-V line.

He has a set of bookshelf Energys all the way around which he seems to think very highly of, but I never thought that much of Energy.

i ordered an RX-V3800 last weekend -- hopefully it arrives tomorrow... i play quite a bit of music and that's the big difference for me. a friend of mine just picked up the Elite VSX-94TXH and it just doesn't sound the same. i guess in that price range, the only others with TrueHD/DTS-HD MA support are the Denon AVR-3808CI, Marantz SR7002 and SR8002 which i'll admit i just didn't listen to... the 3800 ($1,800CAD) is a step up from the 1800 ($1,300CAD) with a bit more power and network capabilities, and i believe a third zone... worth the money? umm... sure!
