Looking for a new reciever

Ok, I seem to have fallen out of touch with the audio aspect of Home Theater over the last few years, not I was really ever in touch.

Anyways...

I am looking to upgrade my Yamaha 1400, to something that will play the current HD audio codecs.
It does not need to be super powerful as I am not 20 anymore and rarely crank it up to any big levels.
I would like at least 2 HDMI 1.3 inputs and HDMI pass through (if you think I need it).

So basically I want a simple unit that will do the basics and do them fairly well. I dont want to spend a lot, but I dont want a cheap unit either.

One I have been looking at is the Onkyo TX-SR705 for example.

Thanks in advance

Even the TX605 would meet all your needs and Bob and I both have had good experiences with it (unless something has changed for Bob). You can get it for a decent price online. The only thing I would like it to have over its bigger brothers is more HDMI inputs, but if you only need 2, its for you.

I want to upgrade to a receiver that has 3 HDMI input but I need to start saving. Here is a stupid question for. Will the newer Onkyo receivers or any receiver allow HDMI cables to be used and pass a signal to the tv without the receiver being on? The reason I ask is that with my cable box I can get audio to the tv via red and white cables or to the receiver via optical. I don't want to have to run the receiver everytime I want to watch just the tv. I would love to get rid of the rats nest of cables that I have.

Nope nothing has changed for me. The only thing i guess i would say is i wish it allowed me to enable the surround back center channels to play for my PCM tracks. The 605 receiver can't do this but the 705 and up can. Othe rthen that though i have no real complaints for the receiver

You would need the receiver to be on in order to hear and see the picture on screen. You coud buy a HDMI switcher box that can be left on all the time. It acts like a receiver to switch between your devices without worry of the receiver being used. If not you can keep going with your wired setup now as the receiver with the HDMI connection will reduce the number of cables in the back. Or if you have 2 HDMI connections on your TV just use one from the cable box to the tv (use an optical cable to receiver for when you want to use it) So the 2nd input can be used for the receiver output

It really works great, I just received my new Onkyo TX-SR605 Receiver for $390 to replace my old Denon 1601 that quit working one night, it does a great job. It drives my 5.1 Polk system at least as good as the older Denon, which always sounded great. At this price, good sound quality is probably a given. It is easy to use, sounds great, and costs less than anything else out there with this feature set. I recommend it.

Glad you like it. Not to mention $390 is very affordable. My Onkyo has given me good service.
