Yes this beast of an AV receiver is going to give the likes of the Denon 5308 receiver some serious competition. Gotta love that cool TFT screen.

I'll probably be able to keep my power amp for another good 10yrs before it dies... A lot better than having to spend $5000 or whatever on a top of the line receiver every 3-5 yrs. I'm also surprised this doesn't have balanced preouts considering its a flagship model. Also, what kind of video processing does this include?

Yeah, normally I would agree with you Ruined, but there aren't a lot of choices in seperates right now that offer as many bells and whistles, which is a lot of what drives these sales.

For now, sure, because TrueHD et. al are relatively new codecs. Within 6 months, there will be plenty of options available from the highend brands.

Although honestly I'm not sure what the bells and whistles actually get you here. I would put my DTC-9.8 up against this receiver for sure in terms of sound quality & video processing quality. Bells and whistles? Maybe not as many, but if they are just bells and whistles for show that do not significantly affect the a/v quality in any great way then again I'm not sure what you are getting that is worth such a price premium. I could think of better ways to blow cash, I guess, like speakers

I agree that $7k for any receiver is a tad much and that separates are definitely the way to go for anyone looking at gear in this price range. But for anyone who absolutely has to have a receiver instead of separates, this Pioneer just might be the best one out there.

Re the balanced pre-outs, actually I don't think there are any AV receivers out there with balanced pre-outs. I looked into that before and found none. So as far as I know only pre/pro's have 'em.

Oh yeah, that's the part I agree with you about.

But I don't think these expensive "flagship" receivers are really for high end audio enthusiasts.

These are for people that go into Best Buy or Fry's and just buy the most expensive one.

Unsure, a friend of mine has the Pioneer Elite VSX-59TXi and it kicks all sorts of ass in terms of sound quality and is built like a tank.

I think when more Pre/Pros are out that have the codecs built in, flagship receivers like this will come down in price, or the pre/pros will be far more expensive...

If a pre/pro was the same price as the reeceiver, it would make sence to get the receiver, so they either need to make it better, and a better value, or they wili not be able to sell.
