DAC Question

Is this correct?

CD player via 2-channel RCA outputs to receiver = Using the CD player's DACs.

CD player via coaxial output to receiver = Using the receiver's DACs.

I think it is, just trying to figure out how this goes and which has better DACs...

NAD C521: Burr-Brown PCM-1732 Sigma-Delta 20-Bit/96kHz

Onkyo 805: Burr-Brown PCM-1796 Advanced-Segment Sigma-Delta 24-Bit/192kHz

Why not do both and audition for yourself. I would however think the Onkyo Dac is superior.

If you do the Nad setup, does the Onkyo pass the signal without touching the signal? Touching meaning, pure pass thru?

You do have it straight, and I went through the same decision between my Squeezebox and Yamaha RX-V1300. I didn't spend a lot of time switching back and forth or anything, but it was fairly clear to my ears which one I prefer, and it's the Yamaha. I don't recall, off the top of my head, specifically what DAC is in either though.

My Yamaha has a pure direct mode, but the difference with that feature on or off is far more subtle to me than the difference in DACs.
