I have found my new receiver

Sony STR-DG820. It's exactly what I wanted and in my price range.

I was going back and forth between this and the 920. While the OSD would be nice, that's the only real advantage I see, and is that worth $200 more? I would only care about DVDs being upconverted and that will be done by a Blu-Ray player when I get one - do I really need Judge Judy upcoverted to 1080?

All that's left now is for it to be available and for me to have the money. But other than that....!

Iggy,

I only pointed out Judge Judy specifically because that's the only thing I watch. Well, that and Ghost Hunters. Everything else is DVDs.

Just to clarify something in case I didn't get it across well enough.

Upconverting signals through the HDMI out on the receiver is the other added benefit offered by the 920 over the 820. But I figure, why pay for it there when the BluRay player with upcovert DVDs, which is the only thing I'd care about.

Congrats Miggy! As an owner of the STR-DG1000, I can say that the Sony receivers are pretty damn good. I have been really satisfied with mine. I would ask you how much you paid for yours, but I assume you stole it...you being a thief, and all.

ganth,

Not only that, but there's the issue of the fact that I haven't bought it yet. Due to the fact that it's not available until 23rd or 24th!

I expect to pay $400 for it, though.

Ah, I thought it was already available for sale, and Amazon usually posts if it is a preorder. At any rate, $400 is a great price for it.

I noticed that, too, about Amazon. For some reason they put "Usually ships in a month or 2" instead of listing it as a Pre-Order.

Looks like Vanns has the reciever for $350 right now, and the 920 for $570

Ooohhh! Thanks, man. I was willing to buy it locally (was looking into the rumors that Circuit City was going to be carrying them) when I thought it was $400 across the board. But I can't pass up $50 cheaper with free shipping.

I've never heard of Vann's, but I assume they're reputable? Reliable and fast shipping, like Amazon, etc?

Very nice. Now I've got to try to convince the Mrs. that we need to upgrade. I've still got the same HTIB system that I've had since 2002 or so. It doesn't have DTS either. I did upgrade a center speaker though for it.

I really don't know too much about Vann's, their website is very nice but that is all I know.

Well, after reading a bunch of good reviews for Vann's, I decided to give them a try. Not wanting to lose the good price, I attempted to put in a pre-order today. Got all the way to the end with the final "Click here to place this order" button, and it brought up a new screen saying "Error: This page could not be found. Continue shopping to the left and try again later."

Not a good sign, and I'm not feeling so great about them. Will hold off for now.
