Onkyo SR 606 Question(s)
Ok I got some money stashed back and I have been looking for something to blow it on. I stopped by Circuit City today and they had the Onkyo SR 606 their.
Buy the Onkyo TX-SR606 7.1 Dolby and DTS Home Theater Receiver and other Home audio receivers & amplifiers at circuitcity.com Now this is probably a stupid question but I am looking at this thing in case I decide to go Blu but can I hook say a componenet hookups into it and only run the HDMI out to the tv. My dvd player doesn't have HDMI so I would use component unless I upgrade. Also, if I just wanted to watch cable tv using HDMI connection from my box and I ran the cable to the receiver and then to the tv would I have to turn the receiver on to get picture and sound to the tv or would the Onkyo unit have to be on also? The wife doesn't like using the AVR equipment unless I am around. Make any sense? Thanks

To your other question, yes you will have to have the AVR on if the HDMI from the cable box is routed through the AVR. You might try sending the HDMI straight to the TV, then have a separate optical cable for the sound for the AVR. That would be the best solution IMHO for keeping he wife happy ![]() j

I have the 605 and I have everything hooked up to it and then only an HDMI cable connected from it to my TV. Composite and component video both are outputted via HDMI to my TV and everything looks great (well as great as composite and component can look, that is).

Well you could always hook up your cable box by component to the HDTV and use the analog white and red cords to it as well for your sound. I do this along with an optical cable to my Onkyo 605 receiver for my Dolby 5.1 sound for when i want it. If not I'm good with my other hook-up directly to my HDTV for regular TV watching. Then i have my PS3(HDMI), Xbox360(Component/Optical), Wii(Component/Analog) and HD-DVD player(HDMI) hooked up to my receiver with the HDMI cable output to my tv.

I am trying to cut down on spaghetti central behind the receiver and tv. Cable management isn't high on the list since they can't be scene. I just have a hard time replacing a piece of equipment that still works just fine. Thanks for the input guys. Oh chlngr1970 I reread your statement this am and it makes more sense now. That may be my best option.

Huh I just looked at the specs on my current Onkyo HT-R500 and it has no component inputs and of course no HDMI.
Decisions, decisions.... It would make cabeling easier. Sorry guys just trying to convince myself. What the heck would I do with my old receiver? I already have my dads in my office for a 2.1 setup for my IPod. I wonder if the upscaling chip in the newer receiver might give my Samsung DLP any problems?
