Weekly Roundup 10/22 (E.T. Phone Home!)

It was nothing like that, penis-breath!

Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, the week of the release (so as to catch any week-of-release sale prices). All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price. If a price is marked "$_N/A_" in the grid, it means that this title is not shown as available on that chain's website...but it COULD still be in-stores!

I only include the titles I feel like including. In fact, the titles are pretty much the ones I'm personally interested in, with few exceptions. I don't get paid for this, and I don't have time to devote to doing every DVD. I have a lovely wife and a four-year-old son I'd rather spend time with. Please don't complain. If there is a title not included in the Roundup that you want to see, just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone...like I do!

Note that Circuit City does not guarantee their sale prices in Hawaii.

* Who's your daddy? How about E.T. for $14.95, and minus $4 more if you need some batteries? K-Mart delivers the loss leader, again! And if that's not enough, they are dumping Mr. Deeds on the market for $14.95 as well! (no battery deal on Mr. Deeds, though).

* BUT BE CAREFUL! E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (as well as Mr. Deeds is available in both Widescreen and Fullscreen versions...get the correct one. "See What You've Been Missing: SEE IT IN WIDESCREEN!"

* Here is a new Borders coupon, similar to the last one (this time the store opening was in Atlanta). It expires 11/8, and is good for up to 15% off on DVDs, but the usual twenty percent on the rest. The prices in the Roundup do NOT reflect this discount.

* Circuit City has a $10 phone card for you when you buy E.T..

* Best Buy will take $4 off the price of E.T if you are also getting either Saving Private Ryan or Jurassic Park. Also, BB is serving up new CD releases from Foo Fighters, Chris Robinson, and the VH1 Divas 2002 for $11.99 each. Why do I bring it up? Because each one comes with a bonus DVD! The latter one, VH1 Divas Las Vegas, has appearances on the DVD by Celine Dion, Shakira, Cher, and The Dixie Chicks!

* Target seems to have my business for Mad About You, with a $16.99 price tag on it! E.T. is "Low Price", probably for the same $16.99 tag. Mr. Deeds is "Low Price" as well, but you're treated to $5 off if you also buy either The Animal, Big Daddy, orJoe Dirt. Finally, despite being wrong about the ad saying "First Time on DVD", you can't go wrong with the individual 007 titles on a "2 for $25" basis.

* Even Walgreens is in on the act this week! E.T. is $19.99, but you can save $5 if you use the coupon to get a Kodak Picture CD at the same time. Also, Mr. Deeds is $19.99.

* On the other hand, CompUSA is sitting it out this week. Ah, well.

* Wal-Mart has no new circular ad this week (they print theirs monthly, not weekly like the others). But, as usual, you can expect them to take the major titles (E.T., Mr. Deeds, 007) and try to beat the competition by just a hair. Check in with them...especially if your local K-Mart refuses to stock those widescreen copies.

* Last week I talked about Best Buy stores raising their prices. Be aware that this is hitting another chain: FYE. Their parent company, TransWorld Entertainment Corp. (TWEC), has raised prices at all of their chains, in fact. But the mall-based FYE stores is the hardest hit, according to reports I'm getting. Everyday prices will typically be up to $3 OVER the list price, if you can believe that. In fact, expect prices to rarely be below SRP, excepting for a sale.

The latest markdowns according to VideoTropics web site (DVD Title/Old SRP/New SRP):
-------------------------
• Dr. No (Special Edition) $34.98 $19.95
• Goldeneye (Special Edition) $34.98 $19.95
• Goldfinger (Special Edition) $34.98 $19.95
• License To Kill (Special Edition) $34.98 $19.95
• Man With the Golden Gun, The $34.98 $19.95
• Spy Who Loved Me, The (Special Edition) $34.98 $19.95
• Tomorrow Never Dies (Special Edition) $34.98 $19.95

Thanks Unicorn. Looks like I'll be taking my KMart ad to CC for a Mr.Deeds & ET price match. I'll also be getting ST3 SE there & I am going to cancel my Amazon order (which hasn't shipped yet) for the Bond box set. I got it for $76.22 (super saver shipping & a $5 coupon) but I'm going to go for the $77.99 + tax at CC. It'll cost about $7 more but I'll get it right away (as opposed to about a 2 week wait) plus CC is offering a bonus 40+ minutes Bond Action Footage dvd (limited to supplies on hand from their Sunday newspaper ad). I only have webtv & can't bring up the Best Buy ad & print it out but they are usually pretty nice about looking online at CC & if they will do it I'll save $3 on the Bond set as BB has it for $74.99. I like getting a 7 disc set locally also due to the chance that there could be a glitch on one of the 7 discs & I hate having to do returns when I order online. It's a long time & a pain in the ass. We get a BB ad in our paper occasionally but didn't get one this Sunday (closest ones are 40 miles away). Thanks for the prices.

I don't know if the limitation of webtv is that you can't read .pdf files or if you can't print stuff out, but if it's the former I threw up a jpg from a screen capture of the ad ....

EDIT #2: Removed link as it's served its purpose and my uni account is pushed to its space limit.

martycoster. The answer is both. Won't read .pdf & I don't have a printer. I did call CC though & they price match within 50 miles. The BB north & south of me are around 35 miles each so they'll either call them or bring the ad up on their computer & price match. Thanks a lot. I know what the ad looks like now from your link.

E.T. is all for me this week, and it looks like Kmart wins out on that one. Mom likes Walmart better though, so they might again get my money.

Next week is a bit busier, though, with three wants and two definite buys. I'm comitted to Best Buy for Spider-Man because I preordered there, but according to this thread, they've got it for cheap anyway. I might just have to aqquire The Return of the Green Goblin, too. However, I'll be checking this roundup and next Sunday's paper for the best prices on The Santa Clause SE, as I'm sure another store can beat Best Buy's $19.99 tag on that one.

As always, thanks for the roundup; it helps!

Well, if $49.99 at Costco is the cheapest the Gift Set of ET is gonna be, it looks like I'm getting the 2-Disc at Wal-Mart for $14.99 price match (or less, I went there with the $14.99 Insomnia Circuit City ad and here they had it for $14.44 or something )

I'll also get Star Trek 3, which seems to be $19.99 everywhere, so I'll just get it at Wal-Mart too.

Cool thing about Wal-Mart is if you get there at around midnight and ask nicely, they'll go in back and get you a copy of whatever you want I work nights, so that's nice for me.

Re: Search for Spock - Costco just told me by phone that they got 3 dozen copies in at $17.99 each!

Also, most Wal-Marts seem to be selling E.T. 2-disc version - both FS and WS - for just $14.87!!

For those who plan to pick up ET at your local K-Mart, can you all report whether your stores have any widescreen versions? I remember my local K-Marts only stocking the fullscreen versions of the Scorpion King, with all of the widescreen versions gone already or never ordered in the first place.

I have a feeling that the same thing might happen for ET.

Only thing that ignores me is you can't walk out of the Electronic department without having someone say " You have to pay for dvd's here" when there are dvd movies outside the department, :rar: Oh well! Full screen only at the NYC Kmart. So I walked my print-out from the circular a few blocks and picked it up at Circuit City (who matched Kmart's price), where I also got a 10-minute phone card. The last-part is a throw-away, but Kmart management should recognize the problem of only carrying full screen DVDs because, after all, I don't think they can afford to lose shoppers after all their money woes.

And for anyone who opened the E.T. DVD: when did this become such a chore? I also had to get in under the folded part to rip out the security device because it set off every alarm at every store I went into after C.C. And the packaging? It sucks, mostly the nameless spine.

But alas, I have E.T. on DVD...

My K-Mart had it only in fullscreen (and man did they have A LOT). I asked the saleswoman if they purchased any in widescreen and her response was, "You mean the one with the lines?"

I took their flyer and price-matched it at Circuit City, the next exit on the highway.

Well, the day started off pretty badly .. I walk into KMart, expecting a by-the-register display like there's been for the past couple of big releases (Monsters Inc & Beauty) .. but that must've been a Disney thing.

So I go to the back of the store and there's ET, stuffed unceremoniously on the shelf, only TEN copies, all FULLSCREEN!
Argh!

So I asked the guy, and he looked at me like I was stupid.\
"I don't think that comes in Widescreen." he says.
"Yes, it does," comes my reply.
"Well, we wouldn't have that here."

So I walked out in shock.

Went out to the nearby SuperWalmart, and in the DVD department are 3 sales associates in the new release aisle with 2 HUGE boxes of ETs. And they're gently stacking them up, separating fullscreen and widescreen.
I asked the price, and -yep - $14.87. She said that their manager calls all the stores in the area to make sure they have the lowest price!

I was amazed by the ratio of full:widescreen, it was basically 1:1
Walmart, although I may have disagreed with you pushing fullscreen in the past, today you're my hero.

For you Costco shoppers, check out my separate thread full of deals on DVDs there, which I found today while grabbing Spock. Some of these are as lowas $6.99 for some great titles!

The Wal-Mart by me (Naperville, IL) had both Full and Wide for E.T. however they were 19.49. I didn't have my K-Mart ad on me so I went home and then to BB where I got for 14.99. Wal-Mart did have Mr. Deeds for 14.87

I visited my local K-Mart, and sure enough, all fullscreen versions (about 40 or 50 copies), no widescreen at all.

Drove on over to Wal-Mart, and they did have widescreen versions for the $14.87 price, so I picked up my copy there. At my local store, there were about 3 fullscreen versions for every widescreen, and the widescreens were on the shelves lowest to the floor.

It seems to me that Wal-Mart is trying to cater to the fullscreen/P&S crowd, to a certain extent.
