Weekly Roundup 6/10
No bucks, no Buck Rogers
![]() Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed advertisements, the Sunday of the week of release (so as to catch any week-of-release sale prices). All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price. If a price is marked "$_N/A_" in the grid, it means that this title is not shown as available on that chain's website or perhaps in their ads...but it COULD still be in-stores! $_"LP" means the advertisement says "Low Price", and $_"HP" means the advertisement says "Hot Price". Use of either of these in the Roundup grid indicates that I could not locate a definate price for the item, and the ad is all I have to go on. Retailers use these phrases in advertisements so that they do not violate MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) agreements with the studios. Doing so can cost them thousands or even millions of dollars in co-op advertising funds. I only include the titles I feel like including. In fact, the titles are pretty much the ones I'm personally interested in, with few exceptions. I don't get paid for this, and I don't have time to devote to doing every DVD. I have a lovely wife and a five-year-old son I'd rather spend time with. Please don't complain. If there is a title not included in the Roundup that you want to see, just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone...like I do! Note that Circuit City does not guarantee their sale prices in Hawaii. __________TITLE__________ _ _Amazon _ BestBuy _ CrcCity _ Target_ _ CostCo_ _ SamsClb Angel/Avng. Old School and Biker Boyz are each available in both Widescreen and Fullscreen versions...get the correct one. * Jungle Book 2 comes with a movie ticket good for getting into free threatrical presentations of either Finding Nemo or Pirates of the Carribean. * Target has a free 2-Liter bottle of 7-Up for you if you buy Jungle Book 2, whose "Low Price" is $17.99. * Circuit City will take $10 off your purchase of Buffy - Season 4 if you also buy either S1, S2, or S3 on the same transaction. * Best Buy will have Buffy - Season 4 for $45.99, and S2 and S3 for the same price. S1 will be $29.99. However, they also have some combo deals: buy any 2 of those on the same receipt and save $15; buy any 3 and save $30, and if you buy all 4 you will save $50. The last deal gets you every episode of Buffy: The Vampire Slayer available to the general public on R1 DVD for just $117.96. That's $1.51 per episode, if you're counting. Oh, all Buffy episodes are in their Original Aspect Ratio...so don't even go there. * The new round of Warner 2-Disc Special Editions are out this week, and they are a great batch. Non-flipper versions of The Right Stuff and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, plus Once Upon A Time In America and - finally - Giant. Best Buy will take $5 off your total if you purchase any two of these on the same transaction. * Best Buy's not done with the combo deals yet: Buy Tears of the Sun for $17.99, and you may also purchase Stripes for $4.99. Or get Old School (on sale for $14.99 alone) together with Road Trip for $25. * Are you collecting the Canadian releases of Beast Wars? Volume 4 releases this week, and you can get it from Videoflicks for $16.99 US, or from Amazon.CA for $14.23 US by today's conversion rate. The latest markdowns according to VideoTropics web site (DVD Title/Old SRP/New SRP): ------------------------- None...I guess last week was plenty! By-the-way, the source for those Paramount title markdowns listed in last week's Roundup must have been bad, because I didn't see a single markdown taken on those. Sorry for steering you wrong...it seemed plausible enough. I guess I'm just too trusting. |

Thanks Unicorn. I'll be heading to Target for Robin Hood SE. I have The Right Stuff coming in a trade for some used discs with another dvdfile forum member & I used my first time $5 discount at overstock.com to get the Brady Bunch 2 pack for $20 & change. Glad I ordered it from them as almost no one has the 2 pack listed & if they get it I'm sure the price will be similar to BB.

Big week! Looks like the following for me..
OLD SCHOOL (Unrated WS) @Best Buy ROBIN HOOD: POT SE @ Target GREASE 2 (Not sure where to pick it up yet, hopefully some other lower price reports will come in) Also, probably going to pick up EQUILIBRIUM finally, SAM'S has a good price but they were fresh out the other day. Also, this store here called COCONUTS has APOCALYPSE NOW: REDUX on sale for $9.99 and I have been meaning to pick that up. Possibly TEARS OF THE SUN if I hear some good reports on the quality of the disc. I heard something about a $5 coupon off TOTS with the BLACK HAWK DOWN 3-DISC--Anyone know anything? Thanks Unicorn. --JTrotter http://www.dvdaficionado.com/dvds.ht...=1&id=batkruse Last edited by JTrotter : 06-09-2003 at 01:13 AM. |

Just want to let people know that the Best Buys here in town price match any major competitor (Circuit City, Target). They have a list of the prices around town that they look at. No sweat, don't even need to go to customer service. Last week I had them price match Animatrix Collector's at CC for 19.99 and T2 EE for 14.99. I'll do the same this week with Robin Hood. I pretty much go to BB now for most every new release, as it's really close.

You basically mail in the rebate, along with proof of purchase tabs from each box set. In the BHD 3-disc, the proof of purchase tab can be snipped away without any damage to the box set, very similar to the tabs of the Warner discs in snappers. Hopefully, the Tears of the Sun set is the same.

Experiment in Terror is a strong maybe, but Is Paris Burning? is a must-buy for me.
This is an ATF for me, even though the film suffers from quite a few problems, the main being the atrocious dubbing. I'd like to see this in the original French with sub-titles but I doubt that will ever happen. There are just too many beautiful moments in this film for me to ignore it: the scene with the Free French running across the roof of the Prefecture of Police and raising the French tri-color, the wedding party on bicycle with the trail of the bride's wedding gown fluttering in the wind, the scene when the streetlights go on and the ant-like images of the German engineers planting their demolition charges....all underscored with one of Maurice Jarre's best scores. |

Thanks to Tharapper, who provides us with a sample of Wal-Mart prices in one location in the heart of the USA. Memphis is a great town. Most of these are great prices. Too bad Target beats them on JB2 and Old School, that Best Buy wins on Biker Boyz, and the clubs beat out on Frida and Buffy.
Speaking of Buffy, get it for $39.99 at Coconuts or BJ's Wholesale, if you're lucky enough to have either one near you. Those Wal-Mart prices do indicate an 82¢ advantage over Best Buy's $5-off-combo price on Right Stuff and Robin Hood. Marginal, but other Wal-Marts might have the 2-disc SE's for even less. Speaking of the WB SE's, Buy 3 two-disc, SE DVD's = Get 1 Free from Warner (coupon should be in- or on- box): Quote:
If you plan to get the two Brady Bunch films, skip the 2-pack since most retailers are charging more just to sell these belly-banded together. Instead, hit Borders to get them separately for $14.99 each, and be sure to use this Borders 10% off coupon to save even more! Newt, you're welcome. I've heard about this film forever. I won't get it street date, but it's on my birthday list. ![]() |

All these people going to Target to buy Robin Hood...not me though, it looks like I'm going to have to get it at Circuit City's price...which is probably full price.

Be Carefull
I went to my local Best Buy at lunch and made my weekly purchases. When the cashier at the register scanned my items and did the final tally the computer didn't take off the $5 for buying 2 of the new SE's. I bought Robin Hood and Once upon a time in America and the I had to tell him about the $5 off and show him the add, he then took it off manually. So be carefull if you are taking advantage of this great offer. |

Fortunately for me, my local Best Buy always seems to be on top of things and has the latest deals programmed in each week. Only thing I had to point out last week was the free Bond Girls DVD that they were giving away with the purchase of Die Another Day, but I think I was supposed to pick up the disc myself, and not expect it to be at the cashier. But the clerk got another person to grab a stack of Bond Girl discs for him, and he gave me one. Gotta give kudos to my local Best Buy for providing better-than-expected service.

"Derek" passes on to me a great Sam's Club deal on Buffy S4: $37.87 is what it's ringing up for at the cash register!
I want to first pass on that I had a small problem today at Circuit City. To my great sadness, they have apparently changed their pricematch policy in the past couple of weeks. They say they no longer match anyone without a printed ad. No internet printouts, no looking it up at their in-store broadband demo kiosk. They won't call anyone. They won't pricematch a website price at all, even for instance BestBuy.com. And then I was told that they won't even match their own website's price. I dragged the lady over to their broadband demo kiosk, and pulled up the website's price guarantee that stated that if I order it online and mark it for "express pickup" (picking it up at the local store of my choice, if in-stock), guaranteed I would get whichever was the better of the two prices. She replied that they didn't HAVE an in-store pickup option! I practically yelled at her, "what is it your website is describing, then?" She swiftly gave in and sold me the item at the CC.com website price, however warning me that "next time I'll have to order it online to get that price". My reply was "oh, in the future I'll do that, or else just simplify things and buy it from someone else". She nodded agreement that this was her preference, too. So much for the great service I've been getting from CC lately...she just threw most of it out of the window with one experience. I will hope this is just one person having a bad day...but she DID quote me a policy change, however, and two other ladies working the service desk spoke up and agreed with her, filling in details. So this looks more like an organizational change, rather than someone in a bad mood. More's the pity. I had a decent DVD day despite that. I did have trouble finding the new WB SE's anywhere...Wal-Mart didn't have them, a call to Target revealed they weren't there, Costco didn't get them, and Borders had gotten 5 copies of each except OUATIA but their SALE price was $19.99...too high. CC left a bad taste in my mouth, so I skipped them. Besides, BB's price was better on these. Luckily, Best Buy did indeed have stock on them...except OUATIA (noone had that one, that I saw). I grabbed RS and RH:PoT for now, and may go back for the others. The Paramount markdowns from last week seem to have kicked in. I picked up AI and Barbarella for $17.99 each, and Bad News Bears for $12.99. I also spotted a copy of Nutty Professor (Jerry Lewis) for $17.99, but it was torn up so I left it. Various of these were at various stores, check BB and CC near you. Borders had the two Brady Bunch films, as I knew they would. I got them for $13.49 each after the coupon. I was also told they had gotten 2 copies of Grease 2 in stock, but they must have had already sold them as they couldn't find them anywhere. Disappointing, since noone else seems to have gotten it yet. Oh, well...the coupon is good through the 15th. Also, there's this new 15%-off coupon! Despite the "limit" of NYC-area stores only, I doubt the average Borders employee will notice or care. Worth a shot, anyway. ![]() I grabbed Buffy at Costco, and that's all. No sign of anything new that wasn't on the Roundup grid. They also got in $11.99 copies of the new Blue's Clues and Dora The Explorer titles, as well as the last two SpongeBob SquarePants DVDs for the same price. I should have waited on Dora/Blue...oh, well. I ended up getting nothing at Wal-Mart...that post which was seemingly directed at helping me with the Roundup (in the other thread mentioned above) showed titles which their in-store at-register list of new DVD releases didn't show! So I don't know if its legit or not. I PM'ed Tharapper and asked a few questions, but no answer yet. Oh, well. If you're listening...you've got mail! ![]() |
