Who is the cheapest? Where do y'all shop?

Hey,

Where is everyone's favourite place to shop for DVDs? I have been trying a few, Amazon etc but they all seem okay.

I am looking for sites that offer nice rebates. I found ebates.com which gives out rebates from Buy.com and 800.com, which is great. They give out 10% rebates on other DVD stores.

If you know of any other sites, share and pass it around.

Thanks,

Yelena

Sorry, you're about a year or two behind the times when real bargains could be found online. They all went out of business. Guess there's no free lunch. These days I think they're all about the same. I generally shop at amazon just because I've been using them for so long and I have a bit of brand loyalty.

But good deals can be find in b&m stores. Walmart tends to have prices comparable to online on a lot of titles, Target can give a good deal from time to time, and I hear places like Sam's Club and CostCo have really good prices.

I used to use amazon, but they've become slow. And a tad more expensive.

I get most of my DVDs (and I buy a lot) online, and now I use buy.com.

This is likely to be your best tool for finding online bargains and many coupons. Be sure to set up preferences for your home state, since living in California may add on sales tax to your order if the online store is based in CA. This is why Amazon is *never* a bargain for those of us in Washington state, since Amazon is based out of Seattle.

Also, for those of us who are on a budget, consider used DVD's as alternative to buying them new. If you have a Blockbuster nearby (and who doesn't nowadays), they buy several copies of a new release, then after a month or two, they sell those copies for $10-17. For instance, I just talked to a lady at Blockbuster who said my store is getting in 10 rental copies of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and that they'll sell for $16.95 used. Don't be concerned about scratches on their used discs. So far, I've had no problems, and if there is a problem, they can be returned for refund or exchange within 30 days.

Hey P7A77,

How do you feel about that whole Amazon fiasco?? Anyway, if you think all the bargins are gone, why bother e-shoping?
I think its still cheaper compared to meatspace.

The other day, I went ahead and actually bought something through ebates.com. I bought some of my college books from half.com through ebates, and I got $5 off. So, hey, Rebates are alive and well my friend. I have seen that light!

I am definately using them to buy my DVDs.

Cheers,

Felix

I think the amazon "fiasco" was just a bad idea gone wrong. I don't feel they were out to deliberately hurt customers. They were trying to get a better idea of what drives sales. Just horrible, horrible execution.

Why do I still shop there? One big reason is the "wish list", and that's even a bigger reason now that dvdtracker has gone pay. I can never remember what the hell I want when I walk into any store, and this lets me browse and keep track of items that look interesting, with easy purchasing later.

Another reason is recommendations and reviews. Yes, it's silly, but I've used it many times when attempting to broaden my musical horizons, and I've found many artists that are now among my favorites.

There's also ease of use. Traffic in this town is horrible, especially around the places where DVDs, CDs, and books are sold. Shopping online lets you order what you want quickly and easily and have it delivered to your doorstep. I don't care about having something right away; a few days to a week isn't that long of a time, and in most cases the cost is already "absorbed" in my checkbook so it's sort of like getting a present. And I'm also helping to cut down on traffice and pollution in town. Sure, UPS also has to drive here, but I get my purchases delivered to work, and we usually have a few UPS deliveries every day anyway.

But the biggest reason is because of variety of selection. A few weeks ago I went to Best Buy (there's no Media Play in town) to get a few titles. They usually have a decent selection at a reasonable price. I couldn't find ANY of what I was looking for, and out of frustration I bought a few other discs because I was geared up to buy something new. Two of them were classical, and you know how difficult it is to figure out which is the better recording. I listened to them and was just moderately impressed with one of them, and disgusted with another. I looked them up at amazon and found a review for one that not only said it was awful, but recommended a better recording (which I then bought online and love).

So are those enough reasons?

Is anyone against BUY.COM? I have found them pretty reliable and cheap until now. When I do a pricesearch using dvdprofiler buy.com is almost always the cheapest one....by 2-3$...but still...

The biggest reasons to E-shop are not because of the bargains. I don't think they ever really were but it was nice while it lasted.
It was easier, and still is, to comparison shop online. Also generally you can expect when you order something you will get it and you can pre-order with little worry.
I ordered The Time Machine special edition which I couldn't fund a Brick and moratr store who had it available for pre-order.
It listed as $79.99. I got it a DVDplanet for 55 dollars, 30 perecent off.

My favorites are (no real order):
express.com (can preorder way ahead of most sites)
buy.com (low prices per item, occasional free shipping)
dvdplanet.com (flat $2.50 shipping AND great selection of DTS CDs)
amazon.com (coupons and ability to fine tune outstanding orders.)

Thanks.
