Bar Code Scanners for Free

Radio Shack is giving away CAT bar code scanners for free:
http://www.radioshack.com/Partners/C...CATGateway.asp

Anyone here willing to pick one up for me and ship it my way? I'm outside US and can't benefit from this offer.

Please reply here with you email address and I'll get back to you.
TIA!

Dom, my dad has one of these things and they are lame. All they do is take you to the web page of the company of the product. It's for people who can't figure out how to use yahoo, or how to type "www.microsoft.com" when they want to hit the company's web site.

Yah, I know, but there's another software for it that lets you use it as a regular bar code reader

Yeah, you can use them with DVD Profiler Dom, they're quiite nifty when you don't install the crappy software included.

Say I recently got informed of DVDProfiler, but own a Mac. Undaunted, I'm running Virtual PC and have entered my collection.

The Cat thing I've checked and again a Windows device, but what is the connection to the computer? parallel, serial (9 or 8 pin) USB, etc.

If I can get the physical connection, the rest should work fine.

Thanks.

It's a ps/2, it works as a pass-through in the keyboard slot, as thats how it inputs the text/upc number.

Clortho: Is there some patch or ad-on to make the cat work with DVDProfiler? Or is it already built into the program?

I got the cat and I've been keeping my own spreadsheet of all my movies and records. If this DVDProfiler is cool and if I can use the Cat to input the movies, well....yeah...

Here's a link to the software you'll need: http://goldsteinsoftware.com/catnip.htm

To set it up for use with dvdprofiler do the following: (this is a quote from a user over at the dvdprofiler forum):

Quote:

To use CatNip with DVD Profiler:

1. "CatNip Settings" screen:
Output Type: Data
Output (.[Period]) Output (Return)

2. "CatNip Profiles" screen:
a. Create a new profile: DVD Profiler
b. Scan Type: UPA
c. Filter: -++++++++++-
d. Leave "Command" blank,
click on "Save Scan"

3. Start DVD Profiler, add a DVD. With the cursor in the UPC entry field, scan the UPC with the CueCat. Voila!

If you change the right hand "Output" field from (Return) to (None) then the proper code will be entered and you can manually press "Enter". My own preference is to let CatNip automatically send the (Return) code.

OH hell yeah! this works great. If you do have the means, I highly reccomend picking one up.

I had the cat because my roommates were all about them so I picked one up while I was waiting on an oil change. I never thought I'd use it. Major appreciation for digital:convergence for providing the world with free bar code scanners. Their stupidity is our gain. Stop by Radio Shack and pick one up

ok we are going for broke. Had two more friends pick these up, but had no use for them. I'm next.

My plan is to snag a PS/2 to USB adapter, and then run the posted patch on Virtual PC on my Mac!.

It just became personal.... oh well maybe not that personal.

---
Drat just went to the RadioShack Website and have to decide if I wait...
"Connecting to an IBM-compatible computer -- featuring a USB port.

Adapter available November 2000.

Connecting to a Macintosh computer

Adapter available January 2001. "

Thanks.

It's my understanding that the Cat operation on the USB interface won't work with the existing cracks that enable them to be used for programs like DVDProfiler. The PS/2 Cat merely enters Keyboard keystrokes, which are easily intercepted and decoded by the Cat software or your crack program. Apparently the USB won't be so easy because it won't be passing through keyboard keystrokes, but actual data. I'm sure there will be different cracks out once the USB cats have been out for a while, but existing ones, apparently, won't work.
