Weekly Roundup 11/18

We'll be right back...with a vengeance! (quote from Space Ghost: Coast To Coast)

Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed advertisements, the Sunday of the week of release (so as to catch any week-of-release sale prices). All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price. If a price is marked "$_N/A_" in the grid, it means that this title is not shown as available on that chain's website or perhaps in their ads...but it COULD still be in-stores!

$_"LP" means the advertisement says "Low Price", and $_"HP" means the advertisement says "Hot Price". Use of either of these in the Roundup grid indicates that I could not locate a definate price for the item, and the ad is all I have to go on. Retailers use these phrases in advertisements so that they do not violate MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) agreements with the studios. Doing so can cost them thousands or even millions of dollars in co-op advertising funds.

I only include the titles I feel like including. In fact, the titles are pretty much the ones I'm personally interested in, with few exceptions. I don't get paid for this, and I don't have time to devote to doing every DVD. I have a lovely wife and a five-year-old son I'd rather spend time with. Please don't complain. If there is a title not included in the Roundup that you want to see, just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone...like I do!

Note that Circuit City does not guarantee their sale prices in Hawaii. Also note that I cannot include Wal-Mart prices in the standard Roundup: Wal-Mart sets prices at individual stores based on nearby competition, so there is not a way I can say here what price you'll find at YOUR local Wal-Mart location. When it comes to Wal-Mart prices mentioned at all, just remember that "Your Milage May Vary".

Thanks, Unicorn. Looks like an all CC week for me with a few pricematches. 007 #2 & #3 PM Target, Sinbad PM Sam's, Santa Clause 2, LOTR:TTT EE, Tomb Raider 2pk priced lowest at CC already. Ultimate Jordan coming from DDD.

I'll give the TTT & Sinbad a Best Buy PM try for the $5 off but I doubt that'll work.

Thanks, Unicorn! There's a whole lot I want this week. Count me in for The Two Towers Extended Edition and Sinbad together at Best Buy with a combined $5 off.

Not that I'm complaining about it, but I wonder why they're running this promotion? I can't think of anything that The Two Towers and Sinbad have in common: they're not really the same genere; they don't really go after the same core audience; they're in different classes as far as the overall quality of the release (Somebody forgot to include an insert in Sinbad, even); and most of all, they're distributed by different studios (LOTR is a New Line film distributed by Warner Home Video, and Sinbad is a DreamWorks film distributed by Universal Studios Home Video.)

My best guess is that it's Best Buy's doing to try to move a few more copies of Sinbad than they normally would: as good of a movie as it is, it probably needs the help. Its theatrical outing was met with a collective shrug (#6 over its opening 5-day Fourth of July weekend with only $10,056,980 en route to a $26,466,286 total) and generally negative critic response, with a horrible marketing campign. Pairing it with the surefire megaseller The Two Towers EE might drive a little more attention its way, which is a good thing. I hope it finds its audience on DVD, as it really is a very fun film.

By-the-way to anyone who's thinking about picking up Disney's boxset/two-pack with both the original Santa Clause movie and the sequel: some idiot in the Disney marketing department decided to do the box in only in P&S. So if you're like me and need both, the only option is to get them seperately, unfortunately.

The giftset is $49.99 at Costco, eh? Hmmm. Does Costco have an ad I could use to pricematch?

Thanks Uni, I've been looking forward to this one

Tharapper, be aware that I think that the offer is NOT in the packages. It's probably only available via the online form I linked to above.

You might print up some forms and give copies to your customers, if you want to go to that trouble. Be sure to print up both types.

It's also possible to get a form sent to you:

If you are unable to print this form, please send a request with your full mailing address via e-mail to ExtEdAc@ewcreative.com and a form will be mailed to you.

Boddah,

Most b&m stores will not pricematch Costco as they are considered a wholesale warehouse (that charges a membership fee) and not competition. They also don't print a weekly ad, just an instore coupon flyer once in a while. The prices are ususlly from the website or someone who saw them in the store.

Hmmmm....

Target is selling the James Bond sets for $69.99 each.
Best Buy has them for $84.99 each.

I was wondering if I can price match from Target at Best Buy for the James Bond sets and still get the $30 off offer when you buy 2 sets. Now that would be a great value!

If anyone does this let me know. It'll be a determining factor if I go and buy it.

Other than that, I'll be picking up LOTR.

I would love to get the Bond sets and to a lesser extent, the West Wing, but cannot afford them now. Will get Bruce Springsteen - Live in Barcelona.

Home for good at last (I HOPE).

Hit CC first thing at 10am & bought everything there with pricematches. They reduced both Bonds with the Target ad, gave me $5 off with TTT EE & Sinbad, & had the best prices on the TR 2pk, SC2, Ult Jordan. With tax came to $250.29. A nice clerk had brought all of them to the service desk last night when I called. I picked up the Bond set #2 & heard a distinct rattling. Back to CC where they swapped it no problem. Came back & opened SC2. It didn't rattle but the hub was broken. I then opened every one of the 24 discs to make sure I didn't have to make a 4th trip. All were ok. Went back again & swapped out SC2. For my trouble I was allowed to keep the Haunted Mansion MovieCash ticket from the defective SC2 so I have 2 tix which is at least the good ending. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks when I watch all of them I won't have any problem discs.

These are the first bad hubs I've had in over a year & I hope the last for a while.

RE: James Bond Sets

I bought Set #1 at Costco when it first came out and, if I remember correctly, it was $75 but had an instant coupon for $7 off (bringing cost to about $67). Any word if they are including these coupons this time around? If not, I guess I'll get 2 & 3 at Best Buy. Thanks.

Didn't work - just got back from Best Buy.

When buying the two sets the register automatically changes the price to $69.99 each. It's still a great deal since the orig. price on each set is $95.99.

I almost had it!! Damn!

The girl at the customer service did the price matches for me and when she rang it up, I got both Bond sets for $69.99 each plus extra $30 off. Then a guy walked up to her and said that it was wrong and he redid the scanning.

BASTARD!!!
Oh well, still a good deal. I paid $80 for the first volume last year.

I got my Bond sets at Best Buy this morning and there wasn't any coupons on mine. I didn't see any with coupons on them either.

The coupons were Costco only - they were basically a $7 gift cards, good only at Costco, included in the packaging. Thanks anyway for the response.

Snagged 4 copies of the LOTR Extended Edition yesterday at a local Wal-Mart for $16.14 each. One of the older employees was wondering if the price of $16.14 was a mistake because they were selling them like crazy.

Just a few quick notes:

Best Buy's price on MST3K Vol. 4 is actually $40.99 in-store...that's $4 cheaper than what their website says!

Best Buy DID pricematch the Circuit City price for Tomb Raider 2, even though my copy had the bonus disc and technically wasn't the same item as CC's. :tu:

Costco has The West Wing for $36.99!

Someone asked about Costco 007 pricing. Well, it's different now than it was on Set #1...in fact, it's better! Costco has $10 instant rebates on the new James Bond collections, making them a net $64.99 (best possible price) for the time being.

I didn't see the new Paramount catalog titles (Prety Baby, Once Upon A Time In The West, Oliver's Story, King David, or Last Tycoon) anywhere I looked.

I somehow got confused on the Journey: Greatest Hits DVD. It's not released this week, it's released NEXT week (11/25). Sorry to get your hopes up...I think Amazon made a mistake on the date and it threw me. But Journey themselves are saying the 25th, and have been all along. I'll include that line item again for next week's Roundup.
