THE Weekly Roundup 12/2 (In the Roundup, noone can hear you scream!)

That's it man. Game over, man! Game over! (quote from Aliens)

Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed advertisements, the Sunday of the week of release (so as to catch any week-of-release sale prices). All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price. If a price is marked "$_N/A_" in the grid, it means that this title is not shown as available on that chain's website or perhaps in their ads...but it COULD still be in-stores!

$_"LP" means the advertisement says "Low Price", and $_"HP" means the advertisement says "Hot Price". Use of either of these in the Roundup grid indicates that I could not locate a definate price for the item, and the ad is all I have to go on. Retailers use these phrases in advertisements so that they do not violate MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) agreements with the studios. Doing so can cost them thousands or even millions of dollars in co-op advertising funds.

I only include the titles I feel like including. In fact, the titles are pretty much the ones I'm personally interested in, with few exceptions. I don't get paid for this, and I don't have time to devote to doing every DVD. I have a lovely wife and a five-year-old son I'd rather spend time with. Please don't complain. If there is a title not included in the Roundup that you want to see, just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone...like I do!

Note that Circuit City does not guarantee their sale prices in Hawaii. Also note that I cannot include Wal-Mart prices in the standard Roundup: Wal-Mart sets prices at individual stores based on nearby competition, so there is not a way I can say here what price you'll find at YOUR local Wal-Mart location. When it comes to Wal-Mart prices mentioned at all, just remember that "Your Milage May Vary".

* Non-OAR discs are left off the Roundup, whenever they've been identified in advance. Examples: Real Men, Checking Out, Car 54 Where Are You?, Cops and Robbers, Livin' Large, & Once Upon A Crime. This does NOT apply to markdowns, which are simply cut-and-paste from other lists.

* Best Buy: Does NOT have any special deals (bonus discs, 2-for's, etc.) for Alien Quadrilogy. There have been rumors that there would be, so I thought I'd clear this up: there's not. Their package is the same as everyone else's.

* Best Buy: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Season 7 has a bonus disc with it on specially marked packages; limited supply available. Buy any 2 Seasons of Deep Space Nine and save $40. Buy 3, save $60. Buy 4 or more, save $100. Must be purchased on the same receipt.

* Best Buy: Save $15 when you purchase both available seasons of Alias at the same time.

* Best Buy: Pirates of the Caribbean is $15.99 by itself, but if purchased at the same time as ONE of the following titles, they become a 2-For-$25 package: Top Gun, Armageddon (barebone edition), Gone In 60 Seconds, Pearl Harbor (barebone edition), Black Hawk Down (barebone edition), Titans. Yeah, some of those "barebone" editions are pretty special compared to the rest...but none of them are the highest-end editions available, so that's really what I'm communicating to you here.

The latest markdowns according to DavisDVD:
-------------------------
EFFECTIVE DECEMBER 2, 2003

The Animal, Avenging Angelo, Casey's Shadow, Loose Cannons, Money Train, Panic Room, Single White Female, Year of the Gun $14.95

Lockdown, Tears of the Sun, Look Who's Talking Now, Look Who's Talking Too, Mo' Money, Postcards From the Edge, Running Free, XXX $19.95

Thanks Unicorn. Looks like Circuit City for Young Sherlock Holmes (with a BB pricematch) & Pirates of the Caribbean (with a Target pricematch). Happy holidays.

Thanks again, Uni.

Just a reminder to BB shoppers, if you've picked up their Coming Attractions promotional item, the "10% off a DVD Collector's Set" coupon should work for the Alien set.

I have a couple Rewards coupons too, so I'll probably pick it up there rather than order from DDD.

Thanks again for the Roundup, Unicorn. Great work -- keep it up!

Pirates of the Carribbean is all this week, from Target. Can't wait.

I was thinking of getting The Alien Quadrilogy blind, but that's just dreaming. I barely have enough for Pirates.

By-the-way: The "Titans" you speak of in the Best Buy Pirates of the Carribbean/Jerry Bruckhimer 2 for $25 deal is Remember the Titans, Disney's wonderful family football drama from fall 2000 starring Denzel Washington. The first two words are in smaller print above Titans on the cover and aren't really readable in the ad, which is probably why you mistook it for just "Titans."

It's an exellent movie, very highly reccomended if you haven't seen it, and from what I hear it's got a good DVD, too. I would get it this week with the 2 for $25 deal but I've got it coming from Disney as a Buy 3 Get 1 Free freebie for this year.

And to anyone thinking about picking up Pirates and Top Gun from said deal - by all means, buy Pirates and enjoy, but if you can, hold off on Top Gun; several rumors say that there's an SE version of the DVD in the works which is being targeted for release sometime in 2004. It will presumably include an anamorphic widescreen transfer and lots of extras to make up for the non-16x9, barebones current DVD of the film.

Wow! Big Week...
Looks like Costco for the Quadrilogy and maybe Target for the Ben Stiller show. (I remember seeing his take off on The Color Of Money when it was on TV - Hilarious!)

I think I'll have to wait for To Live and Die in L.A. and Hud for either Christmas or thru Columbia House.

Thanks for the info Unicorn!

I'n not sure if this is OK, but I wanted to point out that POTC is $14.31 online at DDD after 20% discount, with no Tax.
Alien Quadrilogy is $58.55 after discount, no Tax. For comparison, if you live where there's 7.5% tax, that's like getting it for $54.47.

Although they technically don't have the lowest prices, I am going with Best Buy for the Quadrilogy since I have a $25 gift card left over from my birthday, bringing the effective cost down to 49.99. And the last of my birthday cash will swallow up most of that. And I'm getting Pirates from amazon.com using the $15 gift certificate from the Mastercard promotion, bringing out of pocket expense to less than $6.00.

Thanks Unicorn, much appreciated. Does anyone know if we can use the Deep Discount DVD coupon on Tuesday? If so, I'm gonna pick up PIRATES OTC, YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES, REAL MEN, BEN STILLER SHOW, and TO LIVE AND DIE IN LA. If anybody knows, let me know. Thanks!

Thanks Unicorn! Much appreciated. Just PoTC and To Live and Die in L.A. for me this week. I'll be price matching at Best Buy for both of them so that I can still get the points on my Rewards Zone card.

You're right, that is REMEMBER THE TITANS, and I just goofed when putting together that paragraph. I was trying to finish up and get ready for dinner, so blame it on my stomach!

And I also agree that Top Gun is a bad choice unless you are just desperate to own it, because a Paramount VP (Martin Blythe) has said on a couple of other forums (DVDTalk and HTF...hmmm, we gotta get him to come hang around here!) that a Top Gun SE is definately in-the-works.

just a reminded, Kids In The Hall Season 1 comes out Dec. 5 - only at the official website. If you don't order it there, it won't be available in retail stores until April.

A very good reminder, that. "Kids" is a must-have for my wife, so this is on my radar. I just forgot to remind everyone to keep it on their radar, too!

So snatch 'em up...it sounds like a great set!

$15 M.i.r.

Does Alien have some sort of rebate. I saw the Coconuts ad with it for 74.99 and it said with a 15 dollar M.I.R.? Does anyone know anything else about what this is, and if its offered at Best Buy?

This is a TWEC (TransWorld Entertainment Company) sponsored rebate only good at TWEC-owned chains (Coconuts, FYE, Strawberries, etc.). It's not good at Best Buy or any other competitors.

Be aware that many many folks have complained that they never received their rebates. $59.99 after rebate sounds good, but I'd rather get a for-sure thing like DDD's price with coupon (see separate thread), Costco's price of $64.99, or Wal-Mart's possible price of $66.99 (prices vary by Wal-Mart location).

This is the first time I've ever seen 'The Weekly Roundup' and I must say that I feel like quite an ass for not coming in here sooner. This is fucking great! Thanks, Unicorn, for the work you put into this.

That being said, I guess I'll hit Costco for the Alien Quad and Target for POTC. Luckily, I work next to both of those stores so it's not too much of a hassle to sneak over there at lunch.

I keep forgetting that Ben Stiller and the Young Sherlock Holmes come out this week. I can't afford them all this week so these two will have to wait until a slower, cheaper time of year.

Thanks again!

You're welcome, and welcome to the party!

May I say one thing about Ben Stiller? If you are the least bit interested in it, I think it's safe to say that it will be a loooong time before you can buy it cheaper than Target's $14.99 sale price this week. The thing lists for $26.99, so that's not far from half off! I guess I just feel that this is too good to pass up, so I'm pointing it out to you.

In fact, my Wal-Mart - if they got it in - will probably have that for $14.24, in an effort to beat Target's sale (prices vary by location, though...I guess it depends how close your Target is to your Wal-Mart). Too cheap for my blood...I'm snagging it!

I only found Hot Wheels ($13.20) and Alien Quad. ($66.98) at my local Wal-Mart; the other stuff I expected to buy there hadn't arrived. Oh, PotC was there, but I'm getting that at Costco after work (using my Costco-only $5-off coupon).

I guess I'll also get Alias Season 2 at Costco, where it costs $37.99 per the phone call I just made.

I'll also have to swing into Best Buy and see if they have Young Sherlock Holmes, Hud, and/or the newest DragonTales. If they do have these, I'll probably have them save 'em for me to buy on the weekend, since I have preferred customer coupons in hand good for 10% off up to 3 titles.

The missus stopped by Target for me on the way into work, and succesfully aquired Ben Stiller and The Little Polar Bear, each for $14.99. She says PotC was $14.99 as well, but we're getting it for $13.79 at Costco using that coupon, so she held off.

Dropped by my local Target during lunch, and Pirates was indeed $14.99 here. If you order POTC online, Target's service goes through Amazon, which has it at $17.99.

The guy at BB wouldn't accept my "10% off a DVD Collector's Set" coupon because he said it was only for use on non-new releases, but it didn't say anything like that one the coupon except "Not valid with any other offers". I asked the manager about it, which I hate to do, but they gave me the 10% off.

I found that Alien Quadrilogy is actually $61.99 at Costco!

Also found at Costco:

$37.99 Alias S2, as I mentioned a long time ago.
$84.99 Star Trek: DS9 - S7 (as expected, but not bought by me)
$12.80 Hot Wheels
$12.99 Young Sherlock Holmes
$12.99 Hud
$12.99 The Great Gatsby (Redford/Farrow)
$12.99 That Was Then, This Is Now
$18.79 Pirate of the Caribbean JUNIOR NOVELIZATION INLCUDED! (other BV items containing the $5-off coupon for PotC were merchandised next to it: Recruit, Sweet Home Alabama, Bringing Down The House, The Santa Clause (1), etc.; $17.99 each)...this is like a 2-for $31.78 deal (or equivilent to $15.89 per title).

Gamecube owners might want to know that Mario Kart Double Dash is $44.99 at Costco.

My BB didn't give me a problem using it when I picked up DS9:S9 last night. I would've used it on the Alien Quadrilogy too, if I hadn't already preordered it with Share the Love from Amazon.

(BTW, is anyone else still picking up those "Coming Attractions" DVDs from BB? I swear I get one every time I buy something from them. It get extra coupons to pass on and a replacement DVD case for free. All in all a pretty good deal. )

I had the same problem when I purchased the Alien Quadrilogy. The manager at Best Buy explained the 10% off coupon could not be used on items that are on sale. Alien Quadrilogy was on sale for $74.99 so they wouldn't let me use it.

However, I used a couple of my reward certifcates and got it for $64.99.
