Mail in Rebates - Anyone not do?

One of my local stores (the one closest to work) offers probably the lowest prices on a lot of of DVDs when they are first released. Only problem is, you get it in the form of a mail in rebate which comes in 8 to 10 weeks.

Does anyone not send these in?

Normally it means having to cut out the UPC tag from the cover artwork and mailing that in. Half the time, you don't even get them back.

Today I picked up PIRATES OF THE CARIBEAN. It was $19.99 with a $5 mail in rebate, making it $14.99, cheaper than Circuit City. But, I have to cut apart the whole back of the box for the UPC. I don't know if that is even worth it.

I don't send in the mail-in rebates if I have to cut up the cover art. If it's just removing a cardboard tab or cutting up the insert, it will depend on the movie. If the movie is an absolute favorite, I won't cut up the insert, as I want to keep the DVD, case, and insert in pristine condition.

If it's just a movie where I'm a casual fan of it, I'll cut it up. It all depends on the value of the rebate or whether a free DVD is involved.

When it's a free DVD that I would really like, then I will cut up the insert.

This is why I prefer the cardboard tear-off tabs.

If it is the UPC code, I would try to photocopy it (or scan it in and print it out on similar quality paper) and then cut that up and send it in. It's just a black-and-white barcode, so it's less likely.

This doesn't work for proof of purchase tabs on inserts that have double-sided art on them.

I've done rebates from:
Tears of the Sun/Black Hawk Down $5
Buy 2 Universal movies, get 2 free (Blue Crush & Undercover Brother got Jaws2 and Beautiful Mind FREE)
Nightmare on Elmstreet Box rebate $10 or $15

All of them were removing the tabs or cutting the upc from the insert.

This thread reminds me to mail in my TTT rebate. I hate sending in original receipts though.

I generally do not like cutting up my DVD inserts or the cover. It really spoils the asthetic value of it. I wish that more companies would use the easily removed "Proof of Purchase" tab for rebate purposes than having the consumer cut up their DVD covers/inserts.

Maybe it's the comicbook collector in me, but I just can't cut out the proof of purchase on any DVD. It just kills me.

Sounds like what FYE/Coconuts does all the time. It is a way for them to beat people who want to use their ads to price-match. I will cut a tab for a "Buy X Get One Free" promo, but I try to avoid buying when there is a mail-in rebate involved. I'll cut if I HAVE to, but I'd prefer not to. I'm sure convenience is a factor, but usually their mail-in rebate sale prices are fairly similar to the regular sale prices at any combination of Walmart, Best Buy, Circuit City, or Target.

Oh, and the placement of the Proof tab and the fact that there are multiple tabs are the only good thing about WB snap cases.

I just found a Finding Nemo $2 rebate that comes with buying a box of Mrs. Field's cookies. Unfortunately, it does require to send a proof-of-purchase tab, and they are only on the backside of the cover art.

I don't want to cut up my Finding Nemo cover for what will essentially be a $1.63 rebate (after I pay for the 37 cent stamp).

I've contemplated making a photocopy, but I need some higher stock paper to pull that off.

Sometimes, it just ain't worth it.

The only dvd promotion I did was for Pearl Harbor and they allowed for a copy of the back of the box because the Pearl Harbor was in a unique case to begin with.

I only do it if the code is inside on the chapter sheet. I hate taking the cover to get ny UPC code to send in. I did it with my Snow White dvd to get The Little Mermaid and now i wish i didn't ruin the cover

So i shall only do it if the code is on the inside and will only do it also if the rebate/free offer is actually worth anything
