Renting at Blockbuster

Blockbuster is offering a deal on dvd rentals-$19.99 for 30 days of dvd rentals. That is, you rent one dvd for free each day for 30 days. If you don't rent a dvd one day, your free rental for that day is gone. This deal's bargain status of course depends on how many rentals you'd be able to make in a month, and how big a selection your local Blockbuster has of dvds. Good luck!

AB,

you are the barganmaster! So how is Keith Giffen these days? ;-) I miss that comic book, too.

Thanks for the tips.

Well I tend not to like deals like that anyway (e.g., $1 for a phone call up to 20 minutes, but you still pay $1 even if it's only a 5 minute call), plus I haven't rented at Blockbuster for quite awhile (prefering Hollywood Video for both price and selection).

But even if Blockbuster came out with a deal that did tempt me, I wouldn't use it because of their push at CES to get rental pricing on dvds. Screw you blockbuster.

If BB wanted to really make it a good deal, they'd charge a bit more for the card and let it be good for, say 3 or 6 months. As it is, it's a come-on designed to part people from their money, unless they happen to be confirmed couch potatoes.

Near my home, I have a choice among BB, Hollywood, and my local DVD store. The local folks charge a fair fee for rentals, have a great stock, take excellent care of their discs, and know me well. They're the ones who get my business.

Sounds like they're trying to compete with Netflix. Netflix has a much better selection of titles than BB, but the unavailability of titles is just about as bad as BB.

I'm hoping I will be able to rent DVDs in better condition from Netflix than I have at BB. I'm tired of having to constantly clean DVDs before viewing.

Peace.....

Yes, you can actually get your money out of this deal. But you can only rent 1 dvd per day... so if you want 5 dvds, you have to come in on 5 seperate days & rent the one you want. That, plus the added chance of late fees does not sweeten me to this deal.

I personally like this deal at Blockbuster, of course my store has a good selection of movies. Another nice thing is, if you don't like your dvd you can bring it back, and you're next one is free. Not too bad.

I can't even think of thirty titles I'd like to rent in a single month.

I disagree, availability is wayyy batter at Netflix. And if a movie is out put it on your list and it will come back in a couple days.

When I first joined Netflix, the first 10 titles I put in my queue were out of stock and of those 10, only one "Art of War" has made it back in stock and was sent to me.

I now have almost 300 titles in my queue and about 50 - 60% of those are out of stock. Some are newer titles and some are older titles.

The great thing about Netflix is they at least STOCKED the older titles that BB didn't even stock (like John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness).

For anyone who is participating in the new BB deal, what happens if you return a DVD late? Are you charged late fees? Do you have to return the DVDs you rent each day in order to rent another one?

Peace.....

Of course you're charged late fees, it is just a normal rental with no money exchanged. If you're movie is a 3-day release than it is due back the third day by noon, if it is a five day then it is due back the fifth day by noon. You can have up to 9 movies out at a time. Actually you can have more they just have to okay it.

One nice thing about the Blockbuster in my town is they got about 500 older dvd's all at once, so they have a nice selection.
