Unicorn has computer problems.
I just checked at HTF & they are doing a Weekly Roundup by committee due to computer problems that Unicorn is having. You might want to take a look there & perhaps somebody more technologically savvy than me could link to it over here.

Yea, I might do the Airplane/Coming To America combo instead of the LB/G&D at Target. Thanks for the heads up.

The HTF's Mike Frezon is my new best friend! And BuffaloBill and Reaposaurus are great for relaying it over here. Guys and gals, here is the story: Saturday afternoon I experienced problems with my home computer relating to both Adware (spyware) and an attempt by one of those suckers to hit me with a Trojan virus (actually, a double attempt). Thanks to Norton and Ad-Aware, things were caught quickly and easily, and all was well, or so I thought. For several more hours I was able to internet with ease. At some point I had to reboot due to system problems, and that's when things went to hell. I could boot up no prob, and do anything offline with no prob. I could connect to the internet with no prob...except that 100% of all sites I go to (via host name or even by the actual numeric address) result in DNS errors: "Page not found". E-mail similarly is broken. I can drop to a DOS prompt and ping an IP address over the net, and send and receive packets, though. It's a fair guess that the adware and/or virus took out something vital that remained in memory until I rebooted. What it is, I don't know. I've tried everything I know how to do, including reinstalling several things, and my ISP's weekend helpdesk helped as much as they could. I'm going to call back later and speak to their specialist group for this type of situation (this group is only there on weekdays). It's obvious to you guys by now that I'm posting from work. Well, I can check a few things here and there from work, but while I'm here I primarily have to, uh, work. I have NO idea when I'll be back online at home. I canNOT get e-mail at work from that Hotmail account I have listed; the corporate firewall has all Hotmail access blocked for security reasons. Almost all other forms of e-mail are also blocked to me at work, because I'd have to access them by a webmail page similar to Hotmail. So don't try to e-mail me, I'm unavailable that way for a while. I won't be doing Weekly Roundup stuff obviously until I can get back up. I was actually contemplating taking some time off from it in any case. Mike did an OUTSTANDING job putting it together...I don't know what other titles might be coming out this week, so I can't say if he missed any. I'll look around later when I have time, and probably just mention titles but not prices. Today will be pretty busy for me at work anyway, and I doubt I have time to do TOO much here at the forum. I hope I'll be back online at home tonight, IF my ISP's special guys can help get me back up with no real effort (yanking a needed .DLL out of a CAB file or something). But if it gets complicated, like needing to re-format my drive and all that crap, then it might take a few days to have enough time to do everything I gotta do. In the meantime, I'll check in from work whenever I get a chance. Which is often enough, since my job requires me to wait on results of queries a lot. Thanks again to Mr. Frezon for pitching in; a "vacation" is sorta cool. I wrote over there asking him if he would be willing to do the Roundup for the next 2-3 weeks? I really am blown away by what he did...it's damn near perfect! I'm proud of him...the only thing he really missed, though is the markdowns at Videotropic. With that 2 for $15 deal, looks like I'll finally have to break down and get Titanic (probably with Night at the Roxbury since I've seen Coming to America about 20 times).
I like the movie, but not enough to buy it twice. However, with no SE on the horizon... |

Glad you're back Unicorn. I hope you get your computer problems fixed (though I must admit to not understanding a single word of what you posted. I truly am computer illiterate. Thank god for webtv).
I also don't blame you for wanting to take several weeks off from the Roundup. You put a lot into it & starting the New Year with a vacation from it sounds like a good idea.

Weekly Roundup.
Sorry to hear what happened Unicorn. Hope everything is fixed soon. I had some problems about a month or two ago also with a few trojans that infected my pc. Had me without internet service for a couple of days and I must admit, I never thought it would drive me nuts to NOT have internet access from home. Amazes me how we have come to rely on computers and internet greatly in the last 10 yrs.

I'm still not fixed up, but I'm pretty darn confident that I'll be hooked up tonight.
In the meantime, COSTCO rocks pretty hard this week: $31.49 Cheers S2 $31.49 Frasier S2 $36.99 The Shield S2 $64.99 Babylon 5 S4 $11.99 Spongebob Squarepants - Seascape Capers $ 8.99 Nell (1 month earlier than street date!) They also had a bunch of catalog titles at $8.99 each, so check 'em out. There were good prices on Underworld, Uptown Girls, and Out Of Time...but not the best in town. I did NOT see the separate Alien series releases nor did I see the Warner classics like Jekyll & Hyde. |

My wife decided to pick up Underworld tonight.
I mistakenly told her it was $14.99 at Best Buy. She went there, said that she thought it was $14.99 on the internet... the guy checks (something) (?) and then says "Yeah, you're right - I'll give you it for that, plus $2 off for your trouble." So she got it for $12.99. I don't know what the guy was checking to give her that price, but I'm glad I told her the wrong price. ![]()

AdAware has an undo option to restore what it removed.
In the status screen click on "Open quarantine-list" Select the last quarantined object you removed prior to the glitch. Click the restore button. Double clicking on the quarantined object will give the details of what components were removed. This will give you a clue as to what should NOT have been removed. |

Re: Weekly Roundup (01/06)
Quote:
I'M BACK! ![]() Bellsouth Fastaccess failed me utterly. After understandably not being able to help me on a weekend with a WinSock issue (which is what it was), they failed 4 days straight to get a WinSock level technician on the phone with me. All week long I was hampered by the fact that my boss has me on a dire, time-sensitive project (which my job literally depends upon), and he really wanted me to stay late and work overtime each day, and I slipped out after a straight 8 hours most days to rush home and try to be there for these calls. The ones that never happened. Here's the deal: Monday I called them, waited on hold a half hour, and then found that the needed people were simply "unavailable" (whatever that means...already helping others, or just not there; noone ever said...I got the impression days later that by then they had gone home for the day). So they were going to call me Tuesday. Great, I can deal. Left work "on time" (ignoring the request to put in overtime!) and made it home with time to spare before the phone should ring. No call at the appointed time, though. I call them, wait a half hour to get to a human, then ask for a supervisor. I'm on hold another almost-half-hour waiting for a supervisor to get on the line, and then I'm disconnected. Noone calls me back (I waited up an hour before giving up on that). Wednesday I call them in the late morning from work, risking my boss's ire but I really need this taken care of, right? So I get ahold of a supervisor quickly and explain how they let me down the previous night, and then made matters worse by the hang-up and not having the courtesy to dial me back up, since they have my number. She's real apologetic, says someone will call me that night, and 35 minutes after the agreed-on time she'd call my cell phone and make sure I'm helped. Wed night: no call from the tech on a land line, and 15 minutes into the wait my cell rings and hangs up just before I can answer it. 40 minutes after the appointed time the same thing happens with my cell again. I figure it's the supervisor lady trying to keep her promise, so I have my cell call back the number of the missed call. I find myself in the pool of Fastaccess customers waiting for tech support. After a half hour wait, I get a nice guy who is very apologetic for the problems I've had keeping the tech support people on the phone. He and another guy bend over backwards for a long time making sure it's nothing else besides a WinSock issue. When we're 100% sure that this is the issue, the first guy (who called me back, and is the only one who did so and actually talked to me!) apologizes deeply that he isn't certified to deal with it. He and the other guy made sure that someone would call me at 6:30 on Thursday who WOULD be certified to do the WinSock support (though the other guy tried to push me off to Microsoft tech support, and I refused). Thu, 6:30 - NO CALL! Thanks for nothing, Bellsouth Fastaccess! So, thanks to Eric Harrison, "Weekly Roundup fan" (at "another forum"), I had earlier been able to (from work) get to a website that explained how to edit the registry and then re-install the WinSock. USING THE PRINTOUT I BROUGHT HOME, I TOOK A DEEP BREATH AND DID IT MYSELF! AND IT WORKED!!Thu, 8:15 - Phone rings. It's Fastaccess. And not a WinSock level tech, either...someone at the next level down! By this time I was already back online and working to re-establish my firewall, anti-virus scanning, home network internet connection sharing, pop-up filters, and everything else that I had turned off because Bellsouth's tech support had earlier (on Saturday) told me to "in case it was interfering with the connection". I let this guy have it, no doubt. I talked to the Billing Dept. there today, and it's amazing how the courtesy given during a 10-minute call can make me feel a bit better. Well, courtesy AND a reimbursement that was actually more generous than I expected it would be. Oh, and a snail-mail address to write in and complain about all the crap I took this week from them. They still are balanced along the edge of a blade, though...one wrong move, and I'll be saying "Beep Beep". Thanks again to Eric Harrison for pointing me in the right direction, which was here by-the-way. That site, and TechGuy.org as well, have a new friend and patron in me. Though I wouldn't try that, or some of their other advance routines, unless you really know what you are doing. For those that do, it's great to have a reference to look up. Anyway, this is a long way of explaining that I'm back up at home, and what's been happening. Thanks again to Mike Frezon for doing the Roundup. I have to work this Saturday (all day), and after that and all this I would love to take Sunday off from the Roundup again. Spend time with the wife and kid. So Mike has agreed to do the Roundup again. I will help a bit this time, though! Mike and Eric, what can I say? Words just don't express my gratitude for your help this week. I consider this "my reward" for doing the Roundups all this time. You guys just made every keystroke worth it. THANK YOU, so much! And to everyone else, too, who've always supported me. I feel like the richest man in town! Belated Quote of the Week: Remember George, No man is a failure who has friends. (quote from It's A Wonderful Life) |
