Media Play Trade-In Tuesday
Has anyone tried Media Play's Trade-In Tuesday?
You trade in any used DVD on Tuesday, and get a new release up to $27.99 value for just $13.99. I've got a few clunkers I would just as soon get rid of. How selective are they? |

The two MP I've tried this at are very particular. They wouldn't take my Full Frame Vacation DVD due to some fingerprints on the bottom, so I traded in something else.
Overall I don't think it's too bad.

Well, I answered my own question. I tried it, and it worked well.
Got a new release for $13.99 (up to $27.99 value) and got rid of a movie I didn't care for. Apparently, this can be done everyday, not just Tuesday. |

The way it works is as follows:
Every day, you can bring in any used DVD and trade that towards the purchase of an new release DVD for just $13.99. The regular price cannot be above $27.99. The rule of thumb for most stores is anything released within the last three weeks, but depends on where you do the trade-in (my store for example we will let you trade in towards anything released since the beginning of the year). On Tuesday only, you can bring in any four used DVDs and trade them in for any new release DVD for free, as long as it meets the same price and release date restrictions as noted above. Yesterday for example, I traded in my old copy of Predator along with three other DVDs and got the new version of Predator for free. I think the total value of my trade in would have been only six bucks on any other day, but on Tuesday it got me a $20 movie and a ticket to go see AvP for free. And what product the stores will accept also depends on where you take your business, in terms of cleanliness and so forth. It depends on how anal the person doing the buyback is, but the disclaimer on the flyers read as this: All items must be in good playable condition with no visible scratches. Must include original packaging and artwork. No promotional copies or cutouts. No public domain audio or video recordings. DVD's must be full-length theatrical releases. All games must contain original packaging and instructions. All games must be complete versions. Budget games selling new for $19.99 are not acceptable. The games portion of the disclaimer refers to the trade-in Tuesday promotion. You can trade in any 5 used games and get a new release game for free, provided that it sells for $49.99 or less regularly (not a good offer in my opinion, but that's just me). Every day, you can trade in one used video game (same restrictions) and get $10 off any video game priced $29.99 or more.

I took a them a used movie. I got the 2-disc Lost Boys, brand new, for $13.99. If I had bought it new elsewhere I might have paid $19.99. So I look at as "they gave me $6 for an old movie I hate". Sure, I could have ebayed it for another dollar or two or three if I had that kind of time and interest, or if I had tons of discs to sell, or if it was somehow collectible to begin with. But I don't have that interest, and fortunately I don't sweat every single dollar that bad. I can make a lot more than that investing in a mutual fund. This is a decent deal. |

Media Play is still here, but when Best Buy bought them (and have since sold them again) they closed all of their Musicland chains. So now it's just Sam Goody, Media Play, and On Cue. I had no idea FYE was affilitated with them, but I have two MP's within a 10 minute drive of me.

Also, I'm almost positive that the store in Burlington, VT that is now an FYE used to be a Media Play. Maybe Media Play withdrew from the northeast market and FYE just snatched up the existing locations? In any case, every Media Play I've ever been too is now an FYE! ![]() |

All five (am I right with that number, Marty?) Media Plays in the Buffalo area are still Media Play. Only FYEs I see are in malls.

Niagara Falls (Niag. Falls. Blvd.) Amherst (Sheridan) Williamsville (Transit) Cheektowaga (Galleria) Blasdell (McKinley) Damn, we have 5 and some people don't have one within a 50 mile radius. Go figure. As for FYE, they're overpriced and are only in the Blvd. Mall and Galleria as far as I know. Only good thing about them is that once in awhile they'll break the streetdate.
