So do I want the lenticular cover from Target, the lithograph from CC or the trivia DVD from Walmart with my copy of Harry Potter?

All the 2-disc Harry Potters appear to be pricier at $22.99. I guess we'll wait to see what Best Buy will be selling it for. This seems to be Warner's new strategy, as the 1-disc versions are sold at the cheaper $15/$16 price range, while the 2-disc versions are $20+.

Seems like we're getting less for our money.

Potter 2 disc, Howl & Totoro $63 + Tax. Talk about some shitty fucking prices. I absolutely loathe these 2 tiered pricings of barebones & 2 disc releases.

Same here. We used to get the second discs for free, but now we're forced to pay up to $10 more each time out. And we can't even wait for them to be reduced in price, because the 2-disc versions go out of print so quickly. We got the first three Potter flicks with free second discs, but now we're getting soaked on the fourth. And we'll be forced to do the same with Jarhead as well. FUCK this.

I find it funny that CC is overcharging on BLACK for Xbox. The MSRP is $39.99 not $49.99. Buyer Beware

Two tiered pricing

Quote:

Let's see, based on CC pricing, HP4= $14, HP4 + Bonus Disc=$23 -> Bonus Disc=$9

If the budget for goblet of fire was $150M...

$14/$150M = $9/x

x = $96.4M

By my calculations the bonus disc must have had a production budget of 96.4 million dollars.

OK, I kid, but there's a reason they throw these things in 'for free' -- it's because they only cost a small amount to produce, and they're supposed to 1) drive the purchase of the movie 2) allow the studio to jack the price up a little bit and make more off of the movie or 3) both of the above. A $9 difference/64% markup is insane. I wonder if some studio exec is trying to 'prove' that people don't really care about the special features. "Look," he's say, with a smug grin, "We gave them the option of buying the special edition and they all bought the barebones. Lets kick all these documentary guys off the lot."

Well, I don't have a BB but there are 2 close enough for CC to pm. At least I'll save $2.20 with a HP4 110% pm. I'm hoping that they'll also give me the $6 discount for buying Howl & Totoro on the same receipt. I have to admit my CC is VERY nice to me about pming BB (half the time they don't even look it up online). I'm still calling Sam's Tuesday morning to see if HP4 is even cheaper than BB there. CC will pm them too.

On their site:

Order the gripping war drama Jarhead (1-Disc Regular Edition) — widescreen or fullscreen — and get free bonus dogtags!

Offer is good through 3/11/06. Jarhead releases 3/7/06. Bonus dogtags will arrive with the DVD and are available while supplies last. Jarhead (Collector's Edition) is not included in this offer.
Obviously that's for online purchase, so who knows if it'll apply to in-store.

Their website lists it at $32.99.

I was going to pick it up, but not for that price. Great movie, but not worth double the single-disc.

Honestly, even $25 is pushing it for a 2-disc SE, but thirty-five?!? I liked the movie, but not that much.

It's a plot to make the Potter & Ghibli prices look great in comparison.

As much as I hate it too, you guys have got to admit that the two-tiered pricing system is a good move on the part of the studios. They know that folks like us are willing (sometimes) to pay more for extras, whereas most folks don't really care for them. At least with some of them (War of the Worlds, Walk the Line) we get better cover art that's obviously aimed at the collector.

I'm only shelling out the extra money for the two-disc versions for certain movies. I did it for Walk the Line, but I didn't for War of the Worlds and I won't for Goblet of Fire. I like both of those movies enough to own, but I'm not such a huge fan of either that I want to have all the extras. I doubt that I'd watch them anyway. I don't think I watched all the extras on Prisoner of Azkaban come to think of it.

For folks like me, it's causing me to rent more than purchasing DVDs. My purchases have been way down this year so far, and my rentals of DVDs have doubled.

Are you sure about that though? Are people really opting to not buy the movie at all? I'd like to see some actual data on this. Not that I'm saying you're wrong, I'm just not convinced that you're right.

I hate how now the studio's release two versions, a movie only release, and the deluxe 2 disc edition which is always outrageously priced. I mean come on they wanted 29.99 at Target for the War of the Worlds 2 disc set. That's too much . This is just bad, I remember when all special editions did not exceed the retail price of 19.99 for a 2 disc set. I hope this new "strategy" of theirs fails, and they go back to that.

My thoughts on HP4: I think the studios are just catering to Joe Six-Pack again, who will most likely be purchasing the bare-bones version.

The studios are just saying to us, "Ok, Film-Fanatics, you can have your damn behind the scenes crap... but your gonna pay for it."

Luckily, I have a $10 Rewards Certificate from Best Buy so I'll be picking up the 2-disc there.
