The Disclaimer
Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed Sunday advertisements. All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price.

"LP" in the RoundUp table means a store’s Sunday flyer says "Low Price". That means I could not locate a definite price for the item, and the ad is all I have to go on. Retailers use these phrases in advertisements so that they do not violate MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) agreements with the studios. Doing so can cost them thousands or even millions of dollars in co-op advertising funds.

I, obviously, cannot include EVERY title released in a given week in the RoundUp. The titles included are those that I am interested in...as well as those which I consider will be of interest to a majority of consumers (and sometimes I’ll miss one!). I don't get paid for this, and I don't have the time to list every DVD. So, please don't complain! If there is a title not included in the RoundUp that you want to see, just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone!

Note that I cannot include Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club prices in the RoundUp. They set prices at individual stores based on nearby competition, so there is no way I can say here what price you'll find at YOUR local Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club location. And, as always, Circuit City does not guarantee their sale prices in Hawaii.

The Specials

**BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL! 9 To 5 SE AND Brokeback Mountain AND Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1-disc) are ALL available in both MAR and OAR versions...get the correct one!

--Best Buy has got LOTS of special deals this week!

--To start things off, BB is still working a deal on last week’s big release, King Kong. Save $5, instantly, when you buy King Kong (2005) ($19.99 for 1-disc) and ANY OTHER advertised new release this week. Must be purchased on same receipt.

--Best Buy is advertising FREE Brokeback Mountain: Story to Screenplay Book, instantly, with the purchase of Brokeback Mountain on DVD. $16 value. (7761219) Minimum 20 per store. No rainchecks.

--Best Buy is also advertising that you can purchase a CaseLogic 40-0DVD wallet for only $3 (a $19.99 value) with the purchase of The Chronicles of narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Must be purchased on same receipt. Minimum 45 per store. No rainchecks.

--Best Buy also has a “save $5, instantly, deal” when you buy BOTH Little Manhattan AND Bee Season on DVD ($19.99 apiece). Must be purchased on same receipt.

--You will also notice in the grid that Best Buy also this week has an EXCLUSIVE on Renegade: Seasons 2 & 3 set at $29.99.

--I think it’s worth mentioning that Best Buy is advertising special prices of $14.99 on Walk the Line (1-disc) and Waiting… (NR). I’m also very surprised to see Roman Polanski’s version of Oliver Twist (2005) in the $7.49 listings!

--I continue to be at a disadvantage at deadline again this week as my local papers have failed to supply me with an early Circuit City flyer. My CC information has been culled from various internet sources—including circuitcity.com.

--Circuit City has its own EXCLUSIVE deal when you buy Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe at their stores. FREE DOWNLOAD CONTENT when you buy either the 1-disc or 2-disc Narnia DVDs. Explore the making of the weaponry and discover parts of Narnia which noone else can. --Worth mentioning that Circuit City is also advertising a FREE SNEAK PEEK DVD featuring the new theatrical release “Take the Lead”. Available with the purchase of ANY DVD movie. --Target is advertising that they WILL have the 2-disc Narnia DVD…but they list no price in the flyer.

Of the 70 total titles involved, eight are DVDs (all Disney): Lady & the Tramp (50th AE), Bambi II, Bambi, Cinderella, Kronk’s New Groove, Herbie Fully Loaded (Lindsey Lohan), Valiant, Sky High.

--PHEW! Lots of good deals this week on some pretty good titles! Must…get…some…rest!

Thanks Freezer! Slow week for me. I'll probably just pick up the single disc Narnia to hold me over till a Blu-ray release. If that really is the Polanski Oliver Twist and not the BBC version (which also came out in 2005), then I'll pick it up too. I've heard that the History of the World in the Mel Brooks set is the same non-anamorphic discs that's already out. If they had remastered it I might have picked up the box set. But since so far it appears they didn't, no sale Fox!

It is, indeed, the Polanski version. I've seen the cover art in the ad with my own eyes! I highly recommend the film. At $7.50 it's a steal! Still $20 at most places.

Haven't heard any issues about History of the World. It seems to be a recent anamorphic transfer according tot he reports I've read at the HTF. There HAVE been reports of some of the older non-anamorphic Young Frankensteins finding their way into some of the sets though. Beware.

I just read through the HTF stuff. I might pick it up then since History of the World is anamorphic. Though I am a bit concerned about the anamorphic/non-anamorphic issue with YF. I have the old original disc of it and if I knew for sure I was upgrading to anamorphic in the new set it'd make it more worth it for me. I don't know, maybe I'll just hold out for a Blu-ray release of the Fox Mel Brooks titles.

Also, according to the IGN review, the Blazing Saddles disc included in this collection is the old version (not the 30th Anniversary Special Edition), which contains fewer extra features. So keep that in mind as well.

Yeah, I read that at HTF as well. But Blazing Saddles doesn't really enter into the equation for me as I already have both the old version and the 30th anniv. discs. I almost would have rathered Fox not bothered licensing it from WB and dropping the price on the box a few dollars.

By the way, a WARNING to anyone who is planning to go pick up Brokeback Mountain at Best Buy in order to get the Story to Screenplay book. It has been released since this fall in regular bookstores and has both the short story and screenplay, plus essays from the authors on the adaptation process. In paperback it's $16 retail, so basically they're giving away an item of almost equal value to the DVD.

Nice, and obviously, that's something that should be of significant intrest to film fans. As such, I made a special trip out of my way (Target, with the same price, is significantly closer) to BB in order to get the book.

Here's the kicker though: My local Best Buy didn't have it in yet. They had the DVD (an excess of fullscreen copies and two widescreen, one of which had a loose disc.) So I was able to pick up the one and only non-loose widescreen copy, but no book. They told me that I could call the store later to see when they got the book in -- which they expect to be Thursday --and I can come back with my reciept to claim it then. Which is an additional trip out of my way.

Sigh.

I don't know if this shortage of books has affected anyone else's store or just mine, but it might be something you'll want to check into if you too are going to be going out of your way for this book.

I had the same problem at BB with the Brokeback book (which was my primary justification for buying the disc new, now, and there). They told me that they expected them "later this afternoon", took my name down, and told be to bring the receipt as well. I'm heading out now with fingers crossed; I'll report back for any Twin Cities-area folks who might be sniffing around for further info...
(Incidentally, I was the first out of five people in line purchasing the disc to even ask about it; it also is worth noting that of those other four people, three got out of line to grab a new copy because the PS/WS labeling on the front label was so difficult to notice, and they'd grabbed the wrong one. So buyer beware on two counts: you'll have to ask for the freebie, and check carefully for OAR copies.)

Yeah, the ratio-identifying label is printed in very small text underneath the "framed" poster artwork. It took me a while to find a widescreen copy, and even then they only had two in. I am somewhat glad to hear that the book thing is affecting more than just me because it means there's not a significant problem with my store, and yet it really sucks that they can't provide the promised material in the circular. Watch out on this release!

Following up: No success; now, "after 1PM today" has become "we have no idea." I suggested that they do people the courtesy of posting a sign (since there is a large one trumpeting this non-existent incentive item) that informs people of the situation; the response was apathetic at best. If there's a silver lining here, they have continued to keep a list of names and numbers (about 15 at the location I went to) and promised to call when the books arrived. We'll all have to wait and see, I suppose.

It seems that BB could learn a lesson or two from the film: false hopes (and even the ones that result from earnest lies) breed the deepest resentments, and if you're going to bugger someone, at least a courtesy spit is appreciated.

That's better than my BB, at least; when I asked about it, they didn't have much of an answer prepared, which leads me to think that I was probably the only one so far who had made a point of asking for the book. Theydid not take any information from me and basically said that it is MY responsibility to call THEM and ASK when the book is coming in.

I really do want the book, but this is becomming a real hassle.

I went to get Brokeback today and my local best buy didnt have the book either. So I decided to hold off. But while window shopping I went to Barnes & Noble and they had Brokeback but with a different cover. It was the original poster artwork without that silver border around the outside.

I got the free book at my local Best Buy (Dedham, MA) today. I did find it odd that the only way to get it was to pick it up at the register while paying for the disc, though. You'd think that they'd have a pile of 'em right next to the Brokeback Mountain display rack, like they did with the freebie War Of The Worlds screenplay last November. Read the short story and am about halfway through the screenplay. I was planning on waiting on this title until it showed up in a 2-for-$20 sale, but the book was incentive enough for me to grab it now.

I ended up picking up Brokeback at Wal-mart as the one near me had it on sale for $14.99. So no book for me, which is fine as I'm not into the film enough to need a book about it. On the flip side, Circuit City must really want to get rid of those Take the Lead bonus discs. When I picked up Narnia there the guy in the dvd department tried to give me the Take the Lead disc. "No thanks." I walk a few more feet and another guy in the store approaches. "Don't for get your Take the Lead disc!" "No thanks" I say again. I get to the check out counter, and the girl tries to give me one again. "No thanks" again and she puts it down. I get home and find that she still managed to sneak it back in the bag. I guess they really want me to preview that film!

If it came in a keep case (instead of a cardboard sleeve), you should have grabbed it regardless, just to have an extra case around. That what I did all last summer with the Stealth bonus disc at Best Buy, which they still had free copies of for about three months after the movie bombed. Every time I bought some movies, I'd make sure to grab a free copy.

In the Twin Cities area at least, the BB Brokeback books came in today.

But the catch is this: they didn't contact me as promised, nor did they hold any copies for those who requested it.

It's a good thing I called and rushed there immediately, as
1)there were at most 15 copies left of the order of 42, and
2)it's a VERY worthwhile supplement to the film that all but makes up for the disc's paltry extras: the book has not only the full short story and screenplay, but also post-production essays by each of the three writers involved, tracing in some detail not only the history of the story and the screenplay, but also their respective processes, intentions, reservations, and appraisals of the finished film. If you're a fan of this film or a student of film in general, this is a useful and revealing text.

And here's the final kicker: the employee who steered me to the books said, "You don't need your receipt or anything. Just take one."
Take that as you will -- regardless of where you purchased the DVD, or if you have purchased it at all...
