(CC) after a title = New release in the Criterion Collection.

*SPECIAL NOTE: There has been a long-standing policy on the RoundUp to exclude any new release that is not in the film’s original aspect ratio. This week’s release of The Last Emperor in the Criterion Collection is not in the film’s OAR of 2.35:1. According to Criterion, the film is being released in a new 2:1 AR at the request of the film’s Director and Director of Photography. It is a long explanation (most of which can be found HERE) but DP Vittorio Storaro feels that films of 2.35: 1 should not be released in their OAR to home audiences because “it doesn’t work.” Even though I disagree with this decision by Criterion, I have decided to include this long-awaited re-release of TLE on DVD in this week’s RoundUp. HERE is the HTF review of the release.

The Disclaimer
Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed Sunday advertisements. All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price.

"LP" in the RoundUp table means a store’s Sunday flyer says "Low Price". That means I could not locate a definite price for the item, and the ad is all I have to go on. Retailers use these phrases in advertisements so that they do not violate MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) agreements with the studios. Doing so can cost them thousands or even millions of dollars in co-op advertising funds.

I, obviously, cannot include EVERY title released in a given week in the RoundUp. The titles included are those that I am interested in...as well as those which I consider will be of interest to a majority of consumers (and sometimes I’ll miss one!). I don't get paid for this, and I don't have the time to list every DVD. So, please don't complain! If there is a title not included in the RoundUp that you want to see, just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone!

Note that I cannot include Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club prices in the RoundUp. They set prices at individual stores based on nearby competition, so there is no way I can say here what price you'll find at YOUR local Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club location. And, as always, Circuit City does not guarantee their sale prices in Hawaii.

Thanks Freezer. Just Song Remains the Same on blu-ray for me this week. I'm very tempted by The Last Emperor and have been waiting for an anamorphic version of this film forever. But I just can't bring myself to by a film on SD, especially for that much money. Throw in the aspect ratio issue and I'm going to pass. Criterion ever decides to join the rest of us in the HD world I'll buy it in a second though, ratio issue or not. One of the best films ever made.

The new DVD is only part of "one of the best films ever made"...because of the damn aspect ratio decision!

Unfortunately, the AR situation won't be getting any better when they ever get around to releasing this film on BD.

You never know, if enough people complain and sales are way below expectations, they might change their mind when it comes time for BD.

For the record, I've written Criterion directly and made that VERY request.

But Storaro (the Director of Photography presided over the transfer in on-the-record saying he WON'T approve anything other than a 2:1 AR for a home release.
