You know, there was a time when I would've combed through this sale one title a time... not so much anymore.

This is not a knock on you, Pirate, for posting this. I'm just talking.

And I don't think it can all be blamed on the HD effect. I'm just getting a bit tired of the collecting of shiny discs. I suppose part of that is because at this point my collection pretty much encompasses all catalogue titles I'm seriously interested in, but it feels like I've also got a certain sense of "meh" about the whole thing too.

Maybe it's just a funk.

No, I totally understand. I posted it because, y'know, it's a sale. But, I barely skimmed through it. Not to mention I just got a big order from DDD.

The HD angle factors in as well, because you know all those Warner 2-disc sets included in the sale will be on Blu-ray sooner or later.

I recently took a look at my DVDs and, in what could only be described as a "mediocrity purge," thinned-out my collection.

While I still love getting the films I love (I just got more than 10 discs from the DDD sale), I’ve really cut back on purchasing the nonsense discs. I’m also not a blind-buyer, so I never reached the high disc numbers that some of the folks here have. And it’s never been about numbers for me; it takes the joy out of ogling my collection if half the discs are crap.

Bullshit releases, like the Fox re-issues of the Bond films, really start to sour me to the process of collecting DVDs. These practices stab right at the heart of the satisfaction we, as film lovers, should feel.

Yeah, I went through my collection once and flagged titles for a mediocrity purge too (I like that term!) but could never bear to part with them. Too much of a collector I suppose. I kept thinking things like "You know, one of these rainy days I bet I'll feel the urge to watch Bikini Hotel again," or "Bad Boys II really isn't THAT bad."

I moved a little over a year ago and had to re-work my storage situation, so now I'm on a deadline to finally do that purge. In another 150 movies or so I'll simply have run out of space.

Good thing Blu-ray cases are thinner.

I had close up to 1000 dvds at one time and eventually cut them down to 200. It was getting out of control. Of course in addition to the two hundred I have about 50 Blu Ray/HD Dvds and I keep buying them too. I refuse to buy anymore SD Dvds. If it doesn't come out I might rent it from Red box for a buck a night but I won't buy it.

I've got about 2000 dvds/hd-dvds/blu-ray discs. My blu-ray buying is going strong, but I have cut back on dvds a good bit. A lot of that is because I have everything I want. Most of what I pick up on dvd now is TV series, and even then I have most of what I want. I used to go nuts on discs from the $5 bins, figuring they're cheap and I've never seen them, I might as well give em a shot. But I've pretty much cut that out completely. I don't have the time to watch a lot of stuff these days, and when I looked at my collection I realized I had a lot of crap I'll never watch again. Plus I realized that for the money I spent on four or five of those cheap films, I could get a blu-ray disc of a film I really like. So my buying of SD has pretty much slowed to a crawl.

I think my collection has tipped the 500+ mark sometime this past year, and it feels really big, so I've scaled back my purchase/rental budget to $30/month (at the height of my collecting, I think I was spending $100/month). I'm renting more stuff now, not blind-buying anything anymore (although I did just blindbuy Bug, but it only cost $4).

I'm only buying stuff on sale for $10 or under now, mostly at the Circuit City, Best Buy, or Fry's sales. I also have a backlog of at least 50 individual movies and at least 6 TV boxsets that I've bought in the past 2 years, but haven't watched yet. I watched the Titanic SE 2 years after buying it, and I just watched the Narnia EE version after buying it over a year ago.

I don't plan to buy much in the next 6 months until I get through at least half my backlog of discs. I will still be renting new releases just to stay up-to-date. Those automated rental kiosks for $1-1.50/night are getting more of my business each week.

I did that:
1) when HD quality DVD was released
2) when I bought my house
3) When I started Graduate School
