I think it would be good to also include mulitple movies. So if a person is unable to catch a certain film, they may have a better chance at catching another one. Like we could have Rushmore and maybe 2 or 3 other films as long as someone volunteers to lead the discussion on those films.

Here's a plethora of lists of "Top 100 Movies". The links are on the left sidebar. Hopefully, they can give us some ideas.

I think we should nominate films and then have polls.

Why don't you add a link to the movie in the IMDB so everybody knows wich one you refer to?

Personally, I haven't heard of Rushmore.

BTW, this is the link for IMDB if you didn't know (maybe that's insulting for some people but maybe someone didn't know )

Good ideas!

How does this sound to everyone?

We set up a thread to nominate movies, but limit it to two nominations per person. As soon as we have 10 nominations we could set up another thread with a poll for those 10 (that's the most you can do in a poll, yes?). We'll have the poll go for a week and take the top three movies to discuss (so that we'll be doing three a week--giving people more options about what they want to discuss).

I also liked the idea of doing these more in advance so that people have more time to get ahold of the movie. Perhaps, there would be enough interest with nominations that the polls would get a head of us and we would then know several weeks out what to expect (i.e. If 20 films were nominated within two days then that would set up two polls which would generate the next two weeks worth of discussion).

Make sense?

Feedback? or other ideas about how to make this best work?

edit: actually I just read all that and it seemed a bit complicated. So, here's another idea (labeled: "Idea #2"). We stick with picking films the way we do. We do two a week. I'll set up a calendar that has movies for the next four weeks on it. (and, I would still be very open to having someone more qualified than myself pick the movies).

Running with your Top 10 poll, I say take the top 4 and use them for the next month.

then y'all have pleanty of time to get ahold of movies...

and start taking suggestions for the next month and have a poll in the last week of the month to determin what you will be watching.

I think this is a great idea! I like having lead time so people can track down the films. I'm going to miss the Vertigo discussion.

I'd like to see a mix of modern and classics. I think we should discuss films like Citizen Kane, Casablanca and the Godfathers. These films have stood the test of time, and even if we don't like them, the question is why are these so highly regarded?

I think the lists, such as AFIs, Roger Eberts and Sight and Sound are excellent places to look for ideas, it doesn't matter if you agree on the rankings.

I think we should start the nomination process. Should we start a new thread and have people list two films and then we take a poll?

Remember if someone decides to order any of these films, it will take a few weeks for them to arrive. I think the first few that we do should be widely held DVDs (or just let the Vertigo and Rushmore discussions go for awhile).

If we can figure out the first four or five films to get us going we could then weekly decide on a film for a month down the road. For example we select our first five films:

Film A
Film B
Film C
Film D
Film E

This will give us about a months warning for the next movies we add. While we are discussing Film A, we can figure out what Film F will be. While discussing Film B, we can figure out what Film G will be.

We could have a sticky thread that lists the upcoming schedule and seperate threads going for nominations and polls. We could take a poll each week to figure out the next addition, or we could try to figure out the next three or four films at once.

Hmmm...

Could we add a sub-subforum for nominations and polls so we don't clog up this forum?

A great film to offer discussion on, IMO.

I would like to put forward for nomination Gone With The Wind. We would probably need to allow 2 - 3 weeks to give everyone time to watch it, as its not a particularly short film

Great idea, orko007! I'll add it to the list of nominees. I think too that's a good idea for extra time!!!

Here are some movies I think would also make for a good discussion:
  • Cleopatra
  • The Bridge on the River Kwai
  • Cube
  • The Exorcist
  • Gandhi
  • The Longest Day
  • Terminator 1 and 2
  • The Wizard of Oz

Actually, I'm probably going to end up voting for something I haven't seen next time...I'm ashamed to say I own GONE WITH THE WIND and have yet to ever see it...yes, I've never seen GWTW.

Also haven't seen some of what Dom mentioned: BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI, GANDHI, or THE LONGEST DAY....and I consider myself a student of film.

This film class stuff is enough to make me want to the homework!

Thanks for all the nominations!!!

I don't really like to be controlling, but if people make many (i.e. more than 2-3) nominations it will make it hard for us to set up polls (which only allow for 10 choices). I think we're open to suggestions about other ways to handle this, but if you have made multiple nominations, and don't have a suggestion, perhpas let us know which 2-3 are the top of your list. We'll keep all the others in mind for future polls, as well.

THANKS!

Polls do go up to 20 choices, but honestly, do we really want to make one choice out of 20?? It's tough enough to choose one out of 10!

I'm keeping track of all the films that have been mentioned, it's great that we have such enthusiasm!

We're considering multiple polls too....to stretch the timeline a bit. The downside of this is that, well, it's another poll...
