Poll for Film Class 3/17-23 and 3/24-30

OK, here's what we're gonna try....

Slade or I will post a poll (just like this one) that will last for a week. I think that'll give us enough time to gather results (if not, feel free to PM me). The top 2 from that poll will be the next two films we discuss. Slade and I will then each personally pick a whole nother film, and then we'll start four threads, one for each film, all dated, so there's a lot of advanced notice. (With me so far? Good.) The remaining films that "lost" will be recycled to the next poll.

If you want to nominate a film for the polls, by all means, do! Add your suggestion(s) to the "I Have an Idea" original thread, here in the Film Class forum. If we have more than 10 films, we'll generate two polls, therefore stretching the "films in waiting". If a film is always 'last' we may or may not drop it, though. This should ensure we're good even during a 'dry' season.

We'll also mix in some AFI Top 100 films, even some TV shows, just for kicks.

This poll will 'expire' Mar 14, 11:00 pm PST.

Man, that was hard! That list includes four of my all-time favorite movies! I picked The Godfather, but I'd like to see us get to all of them.

I think we all agree Casablanca should be the next film. It is the greatest motion picture ever made.

I voted for the Godfather but I'd like to see other, more recent choices too, like The Matrix or Se7en.

I'm currently the sole representative of Magnolia.
But, I'm up for any of them. So.......that's cool...

Well, I'm not sure about that, but it is one of the many "American Classics" that seems to be above criticism. However, I did vote for it, and personally love the film!

Great job on organizing this. I've seen a similar thing on another site, but it didn't work out as well as this has thus far. The participation level and quality of input here has been excellent so far. I plan to get off my ass and add more info myself to future discussions. I love this forum! Congrats to DVDFile because I think they've adopted something that will educate us all.

Okay, I'll step down from the soapbox now. By the way, I voted for BOOGIE NIGHTS. Couldn't resist, I love that freaking film!

I voted for Boogie Nights too. It's my favorite film, tied with Rushmore.

I went for CASABLANCA.. The only other movie I have seen/own from the choices is Boogie Nights; and in the end I thought let's have the Academy Award winning film.

Could in the next poll maybe Gone With The Wind be placed as an option. Say to replace which option wins

Wow! There are seven films on there that I'd like to see done. I hope that the films not picked will be considered again.

I hope that we can do Godfather at a later date. I have a ten percent coupon with an e-tailer and as soon as Traffic CC is listed, I am going to put in the order that includes the Godfathers.

I'll vote later but both Casablanca and the Virgin Suicides sound good.

double-checking this list again, the only film I haven't seen is FINDING FORRESTER, but I'll only do that if it wins...:p

the list is all over the place. you should organize them by era or period. you have some classics as well as modern classics and just contemporary ones.. i nominate SE7EN(which is considered a modern classic by British Film Inst), MEMENTO(there's ALOT to discuss on this film) and AMELIE(truly inspiring film).. these 3 just happen to be my current faves . what about film movements or styles? for example, DOGME '95, or REALIST filmmakers? we should talk about movies that do not get much attention instead of the ones that do(like godfather and casablanca). harmony korine should definitely be a possible topic.

Wow, falling snow, that's a lot to chew on. This class is in its infancy, so any and all suggestions are welcomed!

slade and I will talk about this, who knows...we're getting so many nominated films, categorizing them might end up being the way to go.....but I'm afraid we'll have to insist that there be no arguing over which films we put in which categories, if we go that route.

And yes, Avid....films that are not picked will get 'rolled over' into the next poll. (tried to say that in the first post, probably didn't express myself well enough)

Thanks, all!

Such a tough decision! I'd love to discuss just about all of these films at one point or another, but I chose Boogie Nights for now, just because I have that movie practically memorized (some scenes more so than others...*cough*).
I have not seen Casablanca, The Virgin Suicides, or Brazil. I suppose I should do so soon though. Drat.

I'd like to see Ingmar Bergman's "PERSONA" get the film class treatment. I'm still trying to figure out what the darn thing is about, even though I have an idea.

Christopher Nolan's "MEMENTO"

How about David Croneneberg's Dead Ringers. If anyone has the Criterion disc, listen to the commentary.

I'll second Dead Ringers as a film we should definitaly discuss, but from the topics above I must choose Brazil.

OSCAR Winner

Why not postpone which ever films wins the poll untill the following week and discuss whichever flick takes home the BEST PICTURE Oscar? (I know that we're currently doing Moulin Rouge, but I don't think its going to win :p )

This wasy we can get our feelings out about the win while they're nive and fresh...

Hey frulad --

My first inclination would be not to do that. I'm sure the 2002 Oscar section (in Now Playing) will be abuzz with discussions on the winners.

This is in the Software section, relating to all things DVD, and only one of the nominated films are out on DVD -- the one we just discussed, as you said.

We could run a poll of past Oscar winners -- that might be interesting.....

but if you did that you have to include so many films that have been dissected to death. Most of them aren't even worth a second look when there is so much more interesting stuff out there. I vote no on an Oscar poll....

I bow to your wisdom, oh Film Class Goddess...

(But in my own defense, this was just something I thought up while daydreaming in the shower this morning. I'm not at my mental best until after 2 pm... )

'sokay frulad....it was a fine idea....

Well, looks like Godfather won with 9 votes. Tie b/w Casablanca and Boogie Nights, though for the class after that

I'm at a loss right now....but open for suggestions.

I will post the next Film Class Thread (3/17-23) and the Film Class God and I will figure out what to do about the tie.....we'll still listen to suggestions, but we are Gods

OK, Casablance and Boogie Nights will be the next two films (after Godfather) that we discuss.....

I will be posting the threads and locking them till it's time, but feel free to prepare in advance for class....

And the poll will then go out farther in the future, I've changed the dates so nobody (least of all me ) will get confused.
