Film Class - Pick as many as you'd like

Slade found out that while you can only vote once, you are allowed to make multiple choices. So pick all the films you'd like to see reviewed, and we'll take the top 4 and use them!

As Amelie won't be out on DVD until June, if the film makes a top 4 this week, I'll set it aside until then. Next week it's off the list until it's out on DVD.

Slade and I discussed it some more, and we've modified the rules a bit. I've kept track of film nominations and have 20 for you to choose from. Losing films (films with NO VOTES at all) will be dropped from the list until they are re-nominated. The remaining films that got votes from the first poll will be added back in as needed so we always have 20 to choose from. Please continue to nominate films in the "I Have an Idea" thread in this forum.

The top four winners will be used for the following weeks:

4/7 - 4/13
4/14 - 4/20
4/21 - 4/27
4/28 - 5/4

And this poll will last for one week, till 3/21. I'll make new threads for the winners, please refrain from posting in them until the specified times. (I can always request them closed!) Hopefully then people can have more time to prepare. You can even watch them early as long as you take notes and don't post until the thread is supposed to start.

OK? Start voting, everybody!

Awesome.

Just might want to watch the numbers on The Matrix though...there's a certain mod here that might try to pad the stats for that one.

I'm sure he can run, but he can't hide. Yes, even if he is a Mod!

I don't think Amelie is coming out on DVD until June.

I guess we can leave it on there, and if it gets in the top four just do it the week after it hits the stores?

I give this poll out of 4. (Just wanted to try them out ).

Whoops, slade....guess I didn't do my homework! Yeah, that'll work...I'll take it off the poll (wait! Can I edit it? OK, here goes....)

Thanks for the s....they're cool, huh?

edit: nope can't edit it. Maybe a mod will help me sub something. I'll ask
edit edit: It already has 2 votes. Let's let it ride, and I'll set it aside for June if it's popular enough. But I'll remove it next time and make a note to re-add in June!

Okay, I am extra pumped about this forum now that my DVD player is back from the shop. I voted about half and half between stuff I've seen and haven't seen. Although I'm kind of scared to watch Requiem For a Dream. But hey, great art is usually not pretty.

I hear you on Requiem for a Dream, Mr. Tony. I've avoided that one myself. I hear people talk about it all day--I don't really feel like coming home and watching it.

And, after having watched Fight Club a couple days ago, I'm not too anxious to watch Se7en.

But, I guess it's good to be pulled out of one's comfort zone.

excellent...I personally picked 3 films I haven't seen in addition to a couple I have seen that I'd like to explore more deeply.

By the way, AMELIE is not coming out until June...but April has a couple of very interesting titles worth noting, like Mulholland Drive and The Man Who Wasn't There . Just to keep the ball rolling...

Noted, Indy. Slade already called me on Amelie (I hadn't run the whole list by him before starting this thread ).....I will definitely add your titles to the list when the time comes!

Thanks everybody....your input is priceless and noted! I think this is one of the best and most well-received ideas in a long time....

You know, I think the Coen Bros are really wonderful, so I want to nominate The Big Lebowski and O Brother Where Art Thou? And The Shawshank Redemption. Thanks.

Morticia: Great poll (I can't wait for Se7en and Eyes Wide Shut personally) but as a proud Indian I would be remiss if I didn't mention Gandhi is spelled wrong (also love that movie)

I'm a big Scorsese geek, and would like to nominate "Raging Bull" and "Taxi Driver." I'd also like to suggest "The Third Man" and re-nominate "Brazil." I wish I hadn't missed the Vertigo posting! Any way we can get updated via e-mail on which films will be discussed next? And who is it out there who would rather discuss a mediocre film like "Seven" than a masterpiece like "Persona" or "The Bridge on the River Kwai?"

Well, I would be interested in how our fellow forum members interpret more abstract films like 'Mulholland Drive' or 'Blue Velvet'. I also think that controversial or 'mediocre' movies would make for a more colourful discussion for film class. What do you think teach?

Thanks Dom -- hadn't occurred to me....I'm still learnin'!!

All nominees have been recorded for next poll, gosh we're gonna be busy for a long time with this Film Class, thanks to all for the enthusiasm.

I'm all up for making sure 'controversial' and mediocre movies get discussed.

Ask slade, I think it'd be fun if we review "Tommy Boy" one day.

I'd like to see Memento discussed here. Next to that, Se7en and Fight Club (not on the list but I'll try anyway).

It could make for more heated discussions, maybe you're right. Still, I'd be more likely to say something about "The Conversation" than "Enemy of the State." Whether that matters to anyone is another story. But honestly, if the purpose of the board is to plumb the depths of the films in question, a thread on "Seven," "Cube" or even "Memento" is resting in shallow water. Cleverly contrived concepts and stylized visuals do not make a movie great. Sure, I enjoyed all three films to an extent, and found things to admire in each of them, but the parts don't add up to a convincing whole. Start a thread on a more 'conventional' film like "The Apartment" and you'll find more to contemplate. Now that I'm off my soap-box...does anyone else like Cronenberg's film "Crash?"

We've tallied the results, the next 4 films have been chosen! Look for another poll later today (when I get home from work...)

Thanks all!
