Announcement: Film Class: What's It About, Anyway?

Welcome to Film Class!

Slade and I are your Film Class God and Goddess. We sorta half-run things in this section, try to keep it on track, neat and orderly.

This is a special section to discuss the technical and/or thematic merits of individual films, chosen by the Forum members.

The purpose being to foster intelligent discussion of films without resorting to "It's a piece of crap." or "It's the greatest film ever." (And so that we all can gain a bit of a film education from everyone.)

We'll discuss a new film each week. Either slade or I will post the film in this forum in advance, and lock the topic until the first day of discussion.

If you want to make any comments about this idea, please feel free to make them in this thread. Check the "I Have an Idea" thread for even more information.

Also, nominations are accepted in the "Nominations" thread. Nominated films will show up in subsequent polls. I try to group the films according to the way that www.imdb.com has them listed. The top winners get to be reviewed, the losers are dropped until re-nominated. So feel free to speak up if a fave gets dropped!

Thanks for attending, please watch your step and put your trash in the appropriately marked containers.

See the Prior/Future Discussions thread for the films we've discussed (with links) and the films we will discuss!

Hey humble Film Goddess/God! Just a thought for consideration of future polls: Would it be possible to have polls that focus on a specific topic (eg. animated movies) or a specific genre, (eg. comedies)?

Hi Travis:

Yes, we've considered that. For now it's just too problematic. One person may consider a suspense film more in the horror genre, or even group it with Classic. (Hitchcock films come to mind here....I don't think I've been in 2 b&m stores that had his stuff in the same place.)

We tried to make things easier by using the "select as many as you'd like" options in the polls, so different genres don't get left out. Obviously anime is easy to classify....as well as comedies, but some comedies are more like dramedies, to pull a wacky word from TV-land. M*A*S*H is drama? Or comedy? Or satire? It gets tough, even for Gods/Goddesses!

If I recall correctly, this is the 2nd time someone has suggested this, so if enough people think it's a good idea, slade and I can rediscuss. We are keeping track of this stuff!

Why do you delete the old threads? I would have liked to read some of them since they are so intelligently discussed. Or perhaps even added a comment, better late than never. :-)

We do not delete the old threads, please use the "show threads older than x days" drop down menu in the Film Class Forum to see all the old threads.

The only threads that get closed are the polls. Discussions can (and do) go on forever.

This is such a terrific idea!

I'm brand new to the boards, period, but you can count on some pretty good participation from me!

Just a suggestion, but if possible showing which movie is being discussed each week in this Forums title or description might gain more attention.
Example:

Film Class
Join fellow movie buffs and discuss weekly featured films!
This week: Indiana Jones Trilogy
Next week: Amelie

Thanks, C Roberts.

Would you believe I've already thought of that?
I'm working on implementing it for this month, but actually having the whole month's 'menu'.

A small suggetion for film class. I think it would be neat to have discussions on specific actor/actress or directors body of work. Something along the lines of our very on actors studio.
