Morticia,

I pulled the trigger on the "submit reply" and the thought occurred to me that I should have checked for old topics! Oh, well. Thanks for being a sport. I guess it's true what they say, that you can always find something new...

Check out the Dramas poll, as well as the Thrillers poll.

Yes, there may be some overlap....this was hard!

Soon to come....
Foreign/Animated poll
Independent Film poll

I'm basically hoping for a PM from some of the Members who nominated films I had trouble nailing down.

Plus...I still have one 'leftover' - I have no idea where to put "Dogma"...it's a comedy...I have very few comedies nominated. Any ideas, anybody??

(note to self: all movies prior to this post have been accounted for)

Marty -- it's never too late! That's what this thread is for....

- Devil's Advocate
- Usual Suspects
- Contact
- Die Hard
- The Abyss (extended version)
- Brazil (Criterion)

More to come, probably.

kenkogler...

Thanks, uh, some of your noms have just been in the polls, but I'll re-nom them anyway. Plus Die Hard just won for the 7/14 discussion, and Contact I decided to have be the 7/28 discussion....so be sure to participate!

As a reminder....
Check out the New Thoughts thread and check the schedule here in What's it About? .

Thanks all!

Robyn Hood:

Thanks for the great noms, I took them all down for the next poll. You might be interested to know that we already had a discussion on Vertigo here -- in fact, it was our Very First Film Class.

As our Film Classes never really adjourn, feel free to look over the thread yourself and add any thoughts you may have!

(edit: note to self, I have Defiant's nominations too....)

Not really sure how many people might want to talk about this one, but I just watched it again on DVD, and it gets better with every viewing, as I pick up more details that I missed in earlier viewings:

Heat (w/Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Michael Mann film)

For another Specific Topic could we talk about The Royal Tenenbaums ending.

*SPOILER*

The tombstone phrase. Why would they and or
Royal want that certain phrase to be on the tombstone?

END SPOILER

I'm new to Film School, but have a coupla nominations...which reveal a directorial bias, but would be fun

The Long Goodbye -- being released in September
Duel in the Sun -- made as the "Gone with the Wind" of westerns!
The Bride with White Hair -- perhaps the most beautiful wuxia ever made, with a truly amazing pair of villains
The Frighteners -- out-ghostbusters Ghostbusters, with a Michael J. Fox who plays against type and pulls it off
Topsy-Turvy -- the shortest long film I've ever seen (well, there is Seven Samurai...)
The Lady Vanishes -- Hitchcock's most sheerly entertaining film until North by Northwest, despite the awful model shots at the beginning

And a pairing for the future, when the second film is released:
Mulholland Drive and Three Women -- I've never seen anyone comment on the incredible similarities, but I doubt that the newer flick would have been the same if the earlier ground-breaker had never been filmed

Welcome to Film Class, WhipSilk!

I've got everyone's noms up to this point. You can expect to see another poll after the 20th of August, to clean out the last set of noms (DRAMAS) and I'll probably include a few of these recent nominations in there too, to round it out to a full poll of 20.

A few nominations if I may.

Blazzing Saddles - this movie would never be made today and its pure genius.

Smokey & The Bandit - a personnel favorite and a movie Alfred Hitchcock called his favorite because they dared to break the fourth wall and acknowledge the camera

Highlander - another favorite that should be discussed

Thats all for now.

Rio Bravo is a truly classic western. It stars John Wayne, Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson, Walter Brennan, Ward Bond, and Angie Dickinson. It's worth reviewing in film class solely for the Dean Martin/Ricky Nelson duet!

Seriously, it is a classic western and I don't think we've done any westerns yet. The DVD transfer is nine thousand times better then the version they show on AMC.

Oh, and the DVD is inexpensive, too.

OK, got all the noms up till this point. I didn't post a poll Aug 20 cause it seemed that participation would have been nil.

I will be posting a poll very soon....Dramas.
