Announcement: Nominate Films Here!

To keep things simple for slade and I, your humble Film Class God and Goddess, we'll be accepting nominations for future Film Class polls in this thread.

Check the Film Class idea here.

Nominate as many films as you like, but remember if we have a whole bunch of films it's gonna take awhile for them to turn up!

The top 4 films will be used for the next 4 classes, the bottom 4 films will be dropped, replaced with new nominations and holdovers from past polls. Got that? Good.

Feel free to renominate favorite films that have been dropped from past polls as well. I'm sure that given time we'll get to all the films mentioned.

Well, I've nominated two films previous that are open for votes, so I'll keep it down to two more considerations.

George Washington (Criterion Collection)
Donnie Darko

"The Royal Tenenbaums" --- I'm curious about Wes Anderson's use of space, and his great utilization of the widescreen.

"Hour of the Wolf" --- The film, directed by Ingmar Bergman, includes some of the best, most exciting visuals and camerawork I have ever seen from Bergman.

"Persona" -- What does the film mean? Are Alma & Elizabeth one person, or two different people?

"Memento" --- We can talk about Leonard Shelby's true motivations; or we can talk about the significance of the backwards narrative.

"Three Kings" --- Why is this Independent-Hollywood movie the single best action movie in a long time?

"Mean Streets" --- Martin Scorsese directs the film as if intoxicated, yet he's such a master with the camera that the combination creates one of the most exciting uses of the camera in cinema.

Perhaps in addition to recognized classics, we could discuss some cult classics every couple of weeks? Why are people attracted to films like Rocky Horror, Buckaroo Banzai or Heathers?

Hallcinematic, actually we did have one week devoted to the Royal Tenenbaums.

Hey, that brings up a good question...Slade or Morticia, are we still allowed to add anything to the older ones? Like if hallcinematic wants to add his thoughts for the Royal Tenenbaums thread can he, or are the threads "shut off" from discussion after a while (to avoid confusion) since we have a new film every week?

Triple HHH -

We haven't discussed "The Royal Tennenbaums" yet. We've had:

Vertigo
Rushmore
Moulin Rouge!
Casablanca

And we've kept the older threads open for now, btw. Don't see a need yet to close them, even though 'discussion time' is officially over.

All new movies (even slade's) are being added for the next polls, thanks everyone!

edit: We're discussing Memento 4/14, Three Kings is in this poll already, and thanks for re-submitting Persona.

ERASERHEAD - so much to discuss.... where to start?

TAXI DRIVER - deep and significant movie with a lot to discuss about...

RAGING BULL - one of the greatest movies ever - some book-to-film comparison and motivations would do nicely...

2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY - the greatest science fiction movie ever, and again, where to start?

LOST HIGHWAY - is there an answer? If so can we discover it....?

There are too many movies to mention, but I think that the above would make interesting discussions...

I'll nominate Amadeus if it hasn't already been done. With the upcoming rerelease, it would be fun to discuss.

I can't believe no one has mentioned JAWS and KING KONG! In fact, I recommend they be discussed together, since they are probably the two greatest monstor films ever, and it is very easy to draw comparisons.

According to imdb.com, King Kong (1933) is on DVD, as a Region 2 release. Great idea, but bummer since we need to keep the majority of this discussion Region 1 or Region 0. (dvdfile.com is a region 1 resource!!)

I can and will add Jaws to the list, if you'd still like to discuss, Snake. I'm sure nearly everyone has seen King Kong, or at least seen the good bits, it's OK to bring up the comparison anyway.

(edit: I can look up the r/d and add the two of them as the date draws near. Snake, feel free to post a link of the info you have.)

I'd also like to nominatte a double discussion of A Simple Plan and Fargo; both of those films are very very similiar and extremely good.

Ok here are a few movie i would like to talk about coming soon

Harry Potter - why was it successful on both adults and children

The Royal Tenebaums - oh man i just can't wait for this movie

Frequency - i will submit as i think its just a great movie and so many discussions of altering the future

The Usual Suspects - as i just saw the movie and thought it would be an interesting movie to talk about

Fargo - oh yah! its just a great film. Great Cinematography

Pay It Forward - great movie that many people never saw with a great message

WONDER BOYS - there's a reason why its in caps because it was such a great movie and was robbed of best film nod at the Oscars

K-Pax - is he or isn't he an alien?

Dogma - different point of views on how it dealt with the religion

Sadly i have more but my mind is a blank at the moment

Akira.

Any other animated movie worthy of consideration? These always seem to get short shrift even though Disney probably has had more influence on this board than any other studio in existence.

How about failures? Is there any movie out there worth discussing that blew it? Can we learn anything by that failure?

When we only get 10 posts for a film like Boogie Nights that most people have seen what is the point of trying to start a discussion about "Les Enfants du Paradis" or "Inherit the Wind." Seriously people!

I'm afraid this section might go the way of the director discussions.

OK, ok....guys....let's all be reasonable. I think this section is doing pretty well. We get a new film every week and are even getting new posters just because of it.

So, slade and I will continue to modify the rules as we see fit, but the one or two things that will remain constant:

1. Please nominate whatever films you wish to see considered.

2. Remember that popular vote does determine what films are chosen....and you can always renominate a film.

Feel free to PM myself or slade if you have any suggestions. I don't wish a flame war or bad blood in this section.

I nominateSOLARIS

The recent R2 release is excellent, and Im sure there has been a R1 release previously. There is a R0 version by Russico, so maybe we have enough people here that have the DVD.
