Writer/Director: Aaron Sorkin

This is a thread to discuss the works of writer/director Aaron Sorkin

The purpose being to foster intelligent discussion of films without resorting to "It's a piece of crap." or "It's the greatest film ever." (And so that we all can gain a bit of a film education from everyone.)

In my opinion, one of the best writers working today is Aaron Sorkin. He's penned such movies as "The American President" and "A Few Good Men", both of which were plays that he wrote first. He also created and wrote the hit shows "Sports Night" and "The West Wing". His dialogue is snappy, his characters are interesting, and his stories are touching.

I'll post my thoughts on all of his work individually later on when I've got the time, I'll just leave you with this quote from The West Wing

"You know, I was watching a television program before with a sort of a roving moderator who spoke to a seated panel of young women who were having some sort of problem with their boyfriends, apparently because the boyfriends had all slept with the girlfriends’ mothers. Then they brought the boyfriends out and they all fought right there on television. Tell me...these people don’t vote do they?"

I was not familiar with Aaron Sorkin, but after checking out his writing credits, apparently I'm a fan of his work. I felt Malice and A Few Good Men were very well written and I enjoyed them immensely. They were both well structured and built up to a satisfying conclusion. I have yet to see The American President, but I guess I'll have to now. And as far as his TV work, I haven't watched The West Wing, but I was a fan of Sports Night.

Sorkin is no longer writting for "West Wing" so catching the new episodes on Wednesday on NBC will have his style but not his work. Reruns are currently running on Bravo and UPN.

I enjoy "West Wing" and think it is some of the best television I have ever seen. I am not a fan of television and there is very little that I will watch. West Wing is inteligent, funny, fast paced.

I liked "American President" even though it was more Liberal Leaning than I perfer, but West Wing being similar in nature is even better.

Its very sad to watch the new episodes. I don't enjoy them at all..

Porkchop, if you like Sports Night then I'd say you'd very much enjoy the West Wing. And in reverse, Istagi, if you enjoyed The West Wing I'd also heartily reccommend checking out Sports Night (if you haven't already).

Aaron Sorkin fun fact: He was producing and writing both Sports Night and The West Wing at the same time.
