Alan Rickman

I like Rickman. But the way the film industry works, there is a depressing tendency for him to get type cast as comic Grand Guignol villains. As such, he is always equal to himself, (unforgettable as the Sheriff of Nottingham or the sleazy political spinmaster in BOB ROBERTS) but underused IMHO. He is capable of so many more dimensions, and is never so good as when he is cast against type.

My favorite performance by him though is as the revenant cellist in Anthony Minghella's TRULY MADLY DEEPLY, we have a delightfully nuanced comic portrayal, seductive enough
to get called back from the dead by the grief of his distraught widow, but also sufficiently annoying, flimsy and full of ticks, as to teach her to dispense with his memory and get on with her life.

So what do you guys think, do you think there's more to him than just a villain?

Fuckin' A, bubba! The Rickman rules. He's had tons of parts, but people only remember the bad-guy ones. Michael Collins, Galaxy Quest, Harry Potter, all good stuff.

You should also check out The January Man for an excellent non-villain performance but no one will ever forget him as Hans Gruber.

Its funny because when I saw him in Dogma I didn't once think it was the bad guy from Die Hard. He did that good a job of acting differently. Also Hans Gruber was pretty cliched and not a very memorable character for me anyway. Rickman playing that character would have to be the reason its a popular one imo.

I enjoyed him in Dogma as well but he will always eb Hans Gruber to me. He nailed that part so well it's hard for me to think of him outside of that character. Anthony Hopkins is almost the same way except he was already well known before plahing Hannibal Lechtor in Silence of the Lambs.

Peace...

Alan Rickman is a terrific actor and wildly underrated.

Favorite films:
-Sense & Sensibility
-Love Actually
-Dogma (watching that at home tonight!!)
-Die Hard
-Harry Potter 1 & 2
-Galaxy Quest

Frankly I think I like Quiqley Down Under more than Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. So me thinks that I just don't like Kevin Costner movies. Rickman was good in that though, but the film is unwatchable.

I tried to sit through Truly, Madly, Deeply - and believe me I really, really love British films - but this I just couldn't sit through. Never did finish it.

I liked him best in Love Actually because even though he played a bad guy - the one who cheated - he wasn't a villain. I think he was good and would like to see him in more roles like that.

I agree. It's kind of sad when you see good actors be so strongly linked with a character/type of character. But I guess it says a lot about the strength of the performance. As a side note, I also find that Rickman has quite a distinctive voice.

One of the finest actors we have today. He was also very good in the recent HBO movie...I can't remember the name of it. He played a doctor with a black lab assistant and they came up with some new techniques. Gah, what was that called?? Stupid work blocking IMDB.

Wasn't it "Something the Lord Made"? Or along those lines?

Ohh, and Rickman is one of the best actors working today!

he's one of those actors that whenever i see him i know he'll do the role justice. even in prince of thieves, which was terribly formulaic, he was good.

I have to agree with everyone that no matter how good he is in any movie, and he is always good, he will forever be Hans Gruber! "Shoot the glass!"

For me, the line is "Give me my detonators!"

EDIT: And I can't forget, "They'll be sifting through rubble for months and by the time they figure out what went wrong, we'll be sitting on a beach earning 20%..."

He's a great villian, I loved him in Robin Hood. He's great in Galaxy Quest

He's ok in Love Actually.

There's a certain flair that he has for portraying frustrated characters, there's that wicked sense of sarcasm that just brings out the best in him.

really? weird.

The first movie I saw him in was Prince of Thieves, didn't know until years later he was in Die Hard as well. Watching Dogma, I kept thinking that I'd seen this guy before, but couldn't place where. Went to IMDB and found out about PoT and Die Hard as well as some others. Great actor.

he's somewhat type casted, but always good. He's made Snape my favorite character in Potter and he was fantastic in Die Hard (duh!)

Btw, this is my first post in dvdfile. I've got about 250 dvds and I am obsessed with updating my gadgets and playing games, so i figure this is a good place for chatting info. its weird how these days with work (consulting work for General Mills) and my girlfriend (yes she's female), how I spend less tiem watching movies and playing games and more time talking about them.

Oh yeah, and I really liked Alan Rickman in Robin Hood. He was probably the only part of the movie I liked though. I liked when he talked about cancelling Christmas and also digging someone's heart out with a spoon.

about myself, i live in dc with my girlfriend.
