Thirteen

This is a thread to discuss the technical and/or thematic merits of "Thirteen".

The purpose being to foster intelligent discussion of films without resorting to "It's a piece of crap." or "It's the greatest film ever." (And so that we all can gain a bit of a film education from everyone.)

Thanks everyone. We are open to any ideas about running this forum.

****SPOILER WARNING**** of course this entire thread is going to be full of spoilers.

I'll have to bite my lip and try not to resort to "It's a piece of crap".

Well, everything this film tried to accomplish, it failed miserably at.

Authentic because a thirteen-year-old wrote it? That's like claiming "Rainman" would have been better if it were written by someone that is mentally-disabled.

Reality? The character development was choppy and the after-school message is best left to "Sesame St.".

It was ambitious and the direction this film tried to set is admirable. However, the film itself deserves no attention.

I loved this movie. I thought it was a very realistic portrait of some of todays youths dealing with peer pressure. Outstanding performances by all. Not an easy film to set through, but well worth the time. Evan Rachel Wood is a actress to watch for.

I'm not sure how realisitic it actually is, given today's youth, but I do appreciate the "edge" it had. It addressed a number of things that teens can experience and I think it did that in a meaninful way. I didn't find it hard to sit through but maybe that's because I don't have a teenage daughter of my own.

Peace...

Well I felt as though thematically it was weak at best. Why? This film is overly unrealistic and tries (while failing to do so properly) to overdramatize potentially minor aspects. Furthermore, the acting added nothing, and the script was far too weak and the movie was not realistic. I for one, being only slightly older than them, found it to be overly exagerated.
