Live MSN Chats! March 2005

All chats begin 6pm Pacific, 7pm Mountain, 8pm Central, 9pm Eastern unless otherwise noted!

Instructions for newbies to the live chats will follow at the bottom of this post.

More info added/changed as I get it...

Magnolia - Thur, March 3rd
JFK Director's Cut - Fri, March 11th
Donnie Darko original cut- Friday March 18th *Changed*
Vertigo - Thursday, March 24th
Inherit The Wind (1960) - Thursday, March 31th (thanks Vonner)

At the end of March an April thread will be started with April's film list and this thread will be closed.

Please reply to this thread with *only* suggestions for future chats. The actual transcripts and such will be posted in their own threads.

(please use your best esc/duck voice from here on out --Tish)
Here are some general instructions on how the chats work for anyone that has not participated or is unsure.
- We all get together on MSN messenger, it can be easily downloaded at MSN.com and is easy to use and install. Its only a few megs. You can also connect if you have Trillian or Gaim. (*OR* you can use MSN Messenger's Web-based chat, which doesn't require an install. --Tish) Just add dvdfilelivechat@hotmail.com to your contact list and when i see that you have added that email address, I will authorize you from my end.

- Everyone usually gets online a few minutes before the chat starts, so that I can add them to one chat window and so we can set up a few options. To make it easier to differentiate between who is talking and what is being said, change your font to an 8 point bold. We also change our screen names to whatever our names are on the boards.

- Then we queue up our DVDs to the same point, usually the 1 second mark into the film, I'll give 30 seconds warning and when I say GO! we all hit play.

- Thats about it. Then the chat commences. After its over I'll take a day or two and edit it down to get rid of any sections that dont really deal with the film being discussed and take out all of the errrs, uhhh, and mmmhmmms. After that the transcript will be posted in the appropriate thread in the Film Discussion forum and everyone can post any more thoughts they had after the live chat finished.

This month seems to have some actual movies I would be interested in doing, namely Vertigo but also JFK. I might actually join in, assuming school doesn't clash... SHIT... I just noticed Vertigo is on a thursday, which is a school night. Dammit... we should switch JFk and Vertigo to accomodate me, because I am super cool.

Damn. JFK was rescheduled? The last time I had checked, it was set for tonight, so I had everything ready. I guess I'll just watch it anyways...

hrmmm, JFK was scheduled for this Friday for a long time. oh well. I'll be there tonight.

I just found an old PM to Morticia from Feb 15th with JFK being set for March 11th, so that date has been up for a while.

I think the theatrical cut of Donnie Darko will go in the empty 17th slot, and I am going to post right now in Software about the LOTR and Star Wars sit downs. If no one starts showing up for these chats right away, the whole idea is going to be scrapped. If Star Wars and Lord of the Rings doesnt get some people to show, then nothing will.

I'll update the schedule sometime today.

Unfortunately I don't have some of the movies we've seen recently, and I was sick earlier in the year.

But count me in for Donnie Darko and Vertigo!

Consider "Clerks" for April as well, esc. I think there's enough weeks.

This stuff is fun, people -- maybe not as much fun to *read* it afterwards, but it's fun to participate in.

EDIT:

Hey, is this going to be the "new" version of DD or the "classic" version? Cause I only have the older version right now. I think we need to be specific on this one!

What time is the JFK chat tonight? I believe I have the first Director's Cut release but not the second one.

Peace...

Please note that Donnie Darko is the "original" DVD release/cut and not the most recent one.

Also please note that Donnie Darko has been moved from Thurs the 17th to Friday the 18th.

Since I'm taking public transportation these days, I'll try to make it home by 6 but no guarantees. I should be home before the movie ends.

Peace...

Barring a break in the space time continuum that I don't know about, the Thursday after the 24th of March would be the 31st. Or, the 30th of March would be a Wednesday.

:p
Blame esc. And *then* blame me cause I didn't look at the calendar.

Usually these things are indeed on Thursdays, so I'll fix that.

I think I'll try one of these soon. I don't have ITW though, so I guess it will be next month.

I'm glad to see you don't have to have Messenger installed.

I've been using ReClock to smooth out the video since I started watching my discs on the computer, and I think I'll have to disable it for the chat. I don't know why it is, but with ReClock the disc doesn't always play properly when I start PowerDVD. The video is fine, but sometimes I get no audio or garbled audio. I usually have to pause it and then unpause it a couple of times to get it to play right. Once it starts playing correctly, it works fine from then on. With this chat, that would be a problem since there's no guarantee I would get it playing properly when we are supposed to start.
