I had forgotten how much Meg Ryan used to own my cinematic heart...

Back many years ago, I was in love with Meg Ryan. It wasn't a stalking sort of love, or a "If only she knew how much I cared about her she would love me too" kind of love. It was more pure than that, more innocent. Back then, emotionally speaking, I was really a wreck. There wasn't a single aspect of my life that made sense or that was in order, especially where love and romance was concerned, and so it was that I came to see her as a sort of surrogate. I could watch her movies and feel by proxy what I wasn't feeling in my everyday life. In her films she was also so human, so honest, and so caring, and that appealed to me greatly. It got to a point to where I was watching "When Harry Met Sally" about once a week. But, as time went on and as I collected myself, I stopped watching them so much until finally I didn't watch them at all. Through some serious introspection and with the help of a loving woman, I became whole, and Meg Ryan was left to sit on my video shelf, forgotten.

Now, now I remember why I loved her films so much, but this time from a healthier perspective. Tonight at work I brought in "Joe Versus The Volcano" because a coworker had never seen it before, and as I sat here watching it again for the first time in years, I was reminded of how much I had once appreciated her films and the good feelings they gave me. Whether it was "When Harry Met Sally," or "Sleepless In Seattle," or "Joe Versus The Volcano," she embodied so many wonderful and quirky qualities. Her characters were never perfect, but they never failed to capture my heart.

Anyway, this is a silly thread, and I'm sure it will fade away with nary a single reply post, but I just had to get that out. I can't think of any other actress whose movies have so consistantly captured me emotionally, and certainly none who has made so many great romantic comedies. She isn't on screen like she used to be, but once she was the rom-com queen, and she deserved it. Sigh...

You have at least one reply. I can empathize with you as I am also somewhat of a "former" Meg a holic. If I had a nickel for every time I saw You've Got Mail (both in theater & on dvd & every time the damn thing came on tbs) I'd be richer than Trump. Also have may times popped Joe Vs. The Volcano, Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally etc... into the ole vcr followed by the dvd player.

I don't think it's a silly thread. She affected me in much the same way as she did you. Other actresses/actors I'm sure have had a similar effect on others so none has imo dominated a genre of film as Meg did rom/com.

I hope for the day she & Tom Hanks get together for a fourth time because I think they could once again find the magic (though it seems about as likely as the 35 years I've longed for a Beatle reunion).

Unlilke you, I've never found that special someone and still often pull out her dvds, though not as much as in the past. I feel bad that she has gone about a half dozen movies without a hit and now seems almost out of show business. But I still have hope that she'll make at least one more rom/com while she still can.

You have good taste Reaver.

Meg Ryan used to be gorgeous, until she wrecked her face with that ghastly plastic surgery. Still, late-80's/early-90's Meg was quite the cutie. Can anyone provide screencaps of Meg in Innerspace when she's sliding across the bed and showing off her incredible legs?

Sleepless In Seattle is in my 'top 10 all-time American films' list. I love Meg Ryan's romantic comedies, and I am man enough to admit that.

I'll jump on the bandwagon too. I don't love her, but I love her work. After Anastasia in 1997 (she was the speaking voice of the title character) -- which is still a personal favorite of mine -- I started renting her other films and enjoyed them a great deal. Sleepless in Seattle made its way into my DVD collection, and I've got You've Got Mail and Joe vs. the Volcano on VHS (what is that again?) City of Angels and French Kiss are great too.

Sleepless was good, but for me it can't hold a candle to the utter brilliance of When Harry Met Sally. It is, in my opinion, the best romantic comedy ever made.

WHMS isn't escapist enough for me. It has too much of the cynicism that exists in the real world. Undeniably, it's a great film with a great script and great acting. But when it comes to true heart melting romanticism, Sleepless takes the cake.

Add me to the Meg Ryan fan list. I even enjoyed her more recent Kate and Leopold which doesn't come close to tugging at the heart strings like Sleepless did. Why this woman felt she needed to blow out her lips with botox is is beyond me. She was still incredibly beautiful heading into her fourties and now she's Hollywood joke staring in one bomb after another.
Tom Hanks needs to hire her on in some new project of his to help boost her career again.

I love kate and Leopold- I found myself watching it on TBS a whole bunch the last year.

And, to not break tradition of my usually foul comments-

She is so adorable that I'd eat her ass with a spoon!!

I loved Meg as well, at least untill I saw In the Cut and saw that she has a bush the size of a small Buick.

Take care of yourself woman.

Well at least it was a small Buick and not a full size Cadillac.

I admit I was a huge fan of Meg Ryan before she started making crappy films and got plastic surgery done. I thought she looked fine before she ruined her face. I loved When Harry Met Sally and Innerspace. Not to mention Sleepless in Seattle is a great film. I hope she is able to salvage her career and make a comeback sometime in the future because she is a talented actor.

Has she had plastic surgery or has she just gotten a lot of botox injections?
