Charlie vs. Willy

After reading the discussion in the software forum, I thought we could use a full thread devoted to the differences between these two films. What do you like in one better?

For example, everyone trashes Depp's performance, but it really isn't "bad" per say. Ebert got it right when he said it felt like he was from a different film. Wilder always felt spot on in his film, in fact, as the title suggests, the film was his.

Thoughts? On music? Actors? Etc.?

Both movies veered from the plot of the book in spots, but I personally prefer the Slugworth plot added to the original movie over the Childhood back-story added to the new movie.

As far as Wonka himself, Depp couldn't have been further away from the book's version of the character if he had raped each child before he killed them.

I will always have a soft spot for Willie Wonka. I grew up with it.

I agree with you here. I was not fond of the childhood plot and much prefer the Slugworth plot. It gave the story an added dimension that actually made the story very much more about moral choices than the new film (also the Fizzy Lifting Drink).

But does it make it bad because it isn't the book? Different, but maybe not bad.

I was never a huge fan of the original film. I was and am a huge fan of Gene Wilder though. I think that with all it's flaws, the original is a better film than the remake if only for Wilder. I don't buy Depp in the roll and find him more than a little creepy - and not in an I-intended-it-that-way way.

The new one added nothing new to the story except for a side-plot that went nowhere and did not entertain. The new one removed two great things about the original, the songs and a better Wonka in Gene Wilder. The new one seemed to want to get by on visual entertainment alone, but there was nothing behind it, so it fell flat.

The old one will always be a classic, the new one will be quickly forgotten. That's my opinion.

I actually liked the songs in the new one. The soundtrack is great.

One major criticism I have is that the chocolate room basically looks the same as in the original. I know it has to look the same to some extent, but it seemed like they took a photo of the original and simply copied it.

Well i like both versions. Each one has its flaws and greatness to them so its hard to pick a winner. I liked Depp's Wonka in the crazy way but Wilder had that darker side to him that made him mysterious and unknowing. We will never get the original Oompa-Loompa sound out of our heads as its still being redone for shows today in their own special way (Futurama and Family Guy) Still i really liked the music for this new movie and sure enough its actually straight from the book and suits the movie and characters a lot more (well it should being from the book) The one thing i really wish i could of heard from the original movie in this one in film at at its credits would of been Danny Elfman singing a cover of "Pure Imagination" I just loved his voice in Nightmare Before Christmas and was hoping to hear the song as if Jack were singing it.

Visually the new movie out does the first. . . all though i think the candy room at the beginning could of been more imaginative then industrial looking. Still the rest of the movie is great from Charlie's house, Squirrel room and the ending with the house in the Candy room (Edward Scissorhands moments there) Acting wise it wa smore down to earth overall for the characters and they didn't seem as cartoony in a way (except for Wonka) They seem more like an average spoiled kid you would see walking today.

So i guess overall i would have to give a nod to the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie with warm thoughts still towards Gene Wilder for being a great Wonka of his own.

The new one has trained squirrels; the old one does not...end of discussion.

I actually wish the movie had more weirdness such as that scene. It was one of the standout scenes to me. Also, the trama room for animatronics. Just creepy and weird.

For all those who thought the new one was too creepy--what about the boat ride in the original? That was just--weird.

Rented it tonight and watched it... I would have to say it's really the last 10 minutes or so that drag the movie down. They should have ended it when the elevator crashed into the house... The boring Father Wonka sideplot just annoys me, and the last 10 minutes pretty much rely on it.

Agreed, I really didn't like the ending either. I will agree with Bob that the image of the house at the end is neat, but just not how they get to it.

It took me 20 minutes of watching Johnny Depp to figure out whose voice he was doing. He sounds exactly like Dave Foley, specifically Dave Foley as Flik in "A Bug's Life."

Tell me I'm wrong.

That being said, I think this may be the single worst performance in Depp's career.

Worse than The Ninth Gate?

As for me, I've never seen the 70's film, so I can only compare Burton's film to the book, and I really loved the movie. Highly underrated.

Here's my review comparing both version of the movie (and the book).

(I like all versions of the story, but prefer the new movie over the old one, and prefer the book over both.)

I went into this not expecting much and was surprised. It was a descent movie. I still prefer the original, but you can chalk that up to nostalgia.
