Best Films of this Decade (so far...)

Okay, I hope this isn't too audacious to be asking at this point.

So as we approach the end of 2005, we find ourselves around the halfway point of the decade. Through the vast array of films that you've seen, what stands out as the best films of this decade so far?

Try to keep lists between 5-10 films... which should really cause you to think it through.

I'm also interested in what you guys think will be the most memorable films (memorable doesn't necessarily equate to your personal best). If people, a hundred years from now, were to look back at this decade, which movies do you think would be most remembered?

I'll post later, I gotta give it some thought.

At the risk of being predictable, I'll say that the Lord of the Rings trilogy will probably be remembered, or at least I hope so ... I really think that they deserve it.

Other than that, I really dont know.

I can't think of 5 at the moment, but I think City of God deserves to be on that list.

I think the top films of the decade -- in chronological order of their original release date so far as I can recall -- are as follows. This is a top 20 because I just couldn't leave any of these out:

1) Spirited Away (2001, Japan)
2) Monsters, Inc. (2001)
3) The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
4) Hero (2002, China)
5) The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
6) Finding Nemo (2003)
7) Whale Rider (2003)
8) Mystic River (2003)
9) The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
10) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
11) Howl's Moving Castle (2004, Japan)
12) The Incredibles (2004)
13) Million Dollar Baby (2004)
14) Hotel Rwanda (2004)
15) Dear Frankie (2005)
16) Batman Begins (2005)
17) March of the Penguins (2005)
18) Proof (2005)
19) Brokeback Mountain (2005)
20) Munich (2005)

The Phantom of the Opera ranks as my phavorite of 2004 (had to do it), but a lot of that has to be because of my personal bias towards the material.

Out of these -- well, out of all films released this decade -- the best one is by far Proof. It beats out everything else by a very large margin.

Well if we go by what will be remembered in say 100 years there may only be a couple from that list (and a descent list it is) that Jake has. All of them Being LOTR moivies. They'll be remembered because the books will be remembered and of course like them or not they'll go hand in hand. The others in that list will be easily forgetable. ask in 50 years "What was the name of that gay cowboy movie??" By then they'll be 20 of them . Ask people now about the movie with the penguins in it more than likely you'll hear "Madagascar".

My favorites probably won't rank in the best of list but if I where to come back in 50 years or so I can safele say these are the movies I would remember.

1. Sin City/Sky Captain and the World of Tomorow
2. Star Wars EP.3 - Finally the end...uhh the beginning....whatever.
3. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - Without this hitting big here Hero and Flying Daggers and countless others never make it here.
4. LOTR Trilogy of course

Hell there where alot of movies that have come out in the past 6 years but to me not that many that I think people will remember when we're all dead and gone.
