Personally, I think this is irrelevant. I think the general awkwardness of their subsequent sexual encounters is what was intended to be sold, not whether she wore a bra or not.

EXACTLY. Movies should strive to not make you realize you're watching actors with contracts. Even in a sci-fi movie they should strive to feel as real and natural as possible, bras + sex = not natural.
