Current Japanese Cinema

I was having a very nerdy argument with a friend the other day about the current state of Japanese cinema. His argument was that Japanese cinema reached its peak with Kurosawa, Ozu, etc., and that most of what the Japanese put out now is either Manga-inspired kitsch or low-key Samurai films that, while good, don’t compare to the aforementioned filmmakers. As much as I tried, I couldn’t really argue this point since most of my examples of current, quality Japanese cinema were, in fact, samurai films.

Now, I would not look for filmmakers from any country to "compete" with Kurosawa, but there has to be good films that I’m either not aware of or that have not been released in the states. Does anyone have any recommendations or thoughts on this matter? I’m looking for stuff that was made within the last decade.
