Thespian Detestation

Is there an actor or actress whom you feel is talented but that you just can’t stand? Or perhaps a movie star whose onscreen presence you loathe in every possible way and are confounded that they continue to get work?

Just the other day a coworker was telling me how much they hate Russell Crowe, and my sister is bored to tears by Al Pacino.

Does William H. Macy make you want to throw yourself in a woodchipper?

Talk about the talentless bastards here.

Michael Pitt:
I’ve seen several of Pitt’s films, most recently the beautiful, but lifeless Silk. I’m not sure what is it, but I just don’t like looking at him. He looks fetus-ish, or perhaps overly adolescent. I think he’s got some chops, but I find his presence and monotone voice bothersome. Perhaps Funny Games will sway me.

Evan Rachel Wood:
I cannot remember the last actress who intrigued me less. Wood utterly bores me, and I find her performances stale and uninspired. And I’m almost completely indifferent to her looks, so not even the sex angle can lure me in.

Harvey Keitel:
What can I say? I just don’t get it. There have been a few roles where I wasn’t completely bored by him, but, for the most part, his performances irritate me to the point of distraction. His deliveries sound canned, or like he’s reading cue cards. He does some great intense mugging and can play "scary" well, but the minute he starts talking, he loses me.

Nancy Grace: She's always playing an overly emotional, murder hungry attorney on fictional television. While she's very convincing as a raving crazy person who ignores facts and logic in favor of raw, ridiculous emotion, she's sort of limited and one-note. However, her lopsided face and blond wig makes me believe that she's had brain surgery at some point in her life, so I'm willing to cut her a little slack.

Hands down Adam Sandler or Will Ferrell. I just don't get it. In my opinion they can't act, they are definitely not funny. Believe me, I'm quite aware of the money they make and the fan base. I'm just not feeling it. They are right up there with Sandra Bernhard. Who keeps asking them back. I avoid their movies like the plague.

Now can we get a diametrically opposite post for Thespian Love. Those actors who can do no wrong? Hmmmm.

Steve Zahn. He just annoys the hell out of me, and makes every movie that he is in much worse. He was decent in That Thing You Do, but have pretty much disliked everything he's been in after.

Drew Berrymore. She was cute in ET, and really grew up in Poison Ivy. But I just really haven't dug her in any of her movies afterwards. Might be the slight lisp that she has, which I just recently noticed.

I'm sure there are others, but these are the main two that come immediately to mind. Cameron Diaz is starting to fall into the category for me, also, but hasn't quite reached the same level as Drew Berrymore yet. Kate Winslet had fallen into that category for me in her post-Titanic roles, but recently has redeemed herself in the past few years.

That kinda goes against the point of this thread. Pirate asked for actors whom you acknowledge to be talented, but you for some reason have a hard time watching.

For me, that list would have to include James Franco, Cameron Diaz and my latest object of detestation: Elizabeth Mitchell.

Now, I am fully willing to admit that that latest one may entirely be due to the way her character is written on Lost, but even in seemingly neutral scenes (or scenes designed to evoke sympathy) I can't stand the woman. I'm working my way through season 3 right now, and each episode I'm crossing my fingers that it'll be her last.

Heh, I love Elizabeth Mitchell's character of Juliet. She is so disarming with that face (and that rack), that it's hard to know what her true motives are. She seems to want to help, but then she always reverts back to obeying Ben. I think that her character is great, and since stupid Michael killed off Libby, her and Sun are the only hot female characters left that I actually care about.

Yeah, she's nice to look at, but like Julia Roberts, I can't stand seeing her anymore. Somehow you can get to be too skinny.

She's had like 50 kids in the last few years. Looks alright to me.

I love Elizabeth Mitchell, too. I hadn't seen enough of her over the years since spotting her in Gia. Enjoyed her in smaller roles like in Frequency, Santa Clause 2, and 3: The Dale Earnhardt Story. Lost seems to be a breakout role for her after getting mostly cast as girlfriends/wives/love interests in most movies. I think she makes Lost a much better show and is easily more interesting than the original characters that have been killed off.

Her face is a large part of why she made the list for me. Even a completely neutral facial expression from her comes across as bitch-on-wheels to me. Bleh.

You're right. She's not super skinny. I was mainly referring to Julia Roberts. However, I still don't like Paltrow. She bothers me.
