I figured this was the best thread to stick this picture in. It's a Photoshopped comparison of the PS3 and the Xbox 360 based on the published specs.

Considering them being so similar in size, I wonder why the PS3 is three pounds heavier.

Oh, and it might be a good idea to change the "Revolution" part of the name of this thread to "Wii."

Two words: Build quality.

(j/k I have no idea - maybe because the PSU will be internal?)

What strikes me about that image is the PS3 is the same size as the 360, or maybe even bigger. Taking that into consideration, I wonder how the Japanese will react? They traditionally like smaller systems because of their apartment sizes. Neither system is exactly small, and certainly not compared to the Wii. I wonder if that will have any effect on what sells?

Umm... I always thought the whole "apartment size" thing was just a tongue-in-cheek joke?

I realize an average Japanese apartment is a lot smaller than over here, and I can understand if huge rear-projection TVs never took off over there due to apartment sizes, but for it to have an impact when choosing a videogame system I would think you'd have to literally live in a shoebox.

I'm not saying size isn't important to the Japanese consumer. I'm just saying I think it has more to do with their cultural esthetic sensibilities rather than the size of their apartments.

Can someone please lay it all out in one post? Here is what I'm after. The exact differences between the 360 and PS3 (sorry Wii...your time will come) concerning Cost of both core and premium, Features of both core and premium and Backward compatability of both core and premium.

When I say core and premium, I mean that for both the 360 and the PS3.

I would think not only myself, but others would like to see an exact comparison of what each system has to offer side by side given the criteria listed above in bold.

Many thanks to whoever is wise enough to filter thru the plethora of posts above and give me a condensed version.

I don't think they really care to have racks of electronics equipment lining an entire wall like Americans do. So, yes, I think it actually is kind of valid. That's why you see so many Japanese companies pushing convergence items. It's also why, for them at least, a combined DVD player and game system might be a bigger seller than for Americans. Japanese apartments aren't shoeboxes, but many are very tiny compared to even small American ones. Also why Sony pushed the whole idea of the PS2 setting vertically (to take up less room). Why the other two have copied.

Not only is the PS3 bigger than the 360, it's bigger than the original Xbox. Both in width, height and depth.

Oh, and I never realized how freaking tiny the Wii is. Pretty cool.

Great comparison! It should have included the hog of a PSU that the 360 needs tho.

I had no idea that the Wii was that tiny! A funny comparison would be the 360 power supply vs. the Wii, methinks.

it's all about the Wii, baby!

The Nintendo Wii will be my first next generation purchase. I am extremely excited about it and Metroid is my favorite franchise, so Nintendo has always had my support as a "release day" buy.

I didn't buy my Xbox or PS2 until they were several years into release.

After watching Nintendo's E3 press release, I couldn't be more optimistic about this system. I think the Wii is doing something different and fun without getting too carried away and ruining things.

One final thing... I have absolutely no problem about the Wii having a weaker graphics processor. I have always felt that part of the joy in playing videogames is knowing that it's a game. When videogames get to the point of looking like real life or movies, some of that child like innocent joy you feel will be lost. When I'm playing videogames I want a fantasy world, not a real world fantasy.

I massively upgraded my computer and bought a Xbox 360 at almost the same exact time. The 360 "fever" lasted a while, but now that launch hype has calmed down, I find myself playing the PC much more often. Also, I bought Oblivion for the 360, and now I regret that choice a lot.

Not trying to make grand statements, just saying... without bias... I think I'm bored of the 360.

Dumb 360 question

This has bugged me. 360 claims HD gaming (which it is, it's beautiful) but the drive is still standard DVD. Whereas PS3 will be BluRay a known HD format. The 360 does not even have a HD-DVD drive. So, how can regular DVD be true HD? Is it upconverted?

The 360 outputs games at HD resolutions but only outputs DVD playback at standard NTSC resolutions. It came out too early for HD drives though I guess there is the talk of the HD DVD add-on.

Thanks! Yeah, I heard about the HD-DVD add on. Must be for movies and not games though.

I think it will be for movies, yes. I don't think they need to bother with the extra storage space provided by HD discs. Plus, if they realeased a game on the format, every buyer would have to have the add-on which would limit their market.

PS3

IGN hands-on with the debug console:

http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/738/738858p1.html

They're not keen on the controller, and it sounds like a few 360 features were copied: Player number lights on the controller, hold down the PS button on the controller to bring up a sub-menu with an option to shut down, having a PS button like the X Guide button.

If games come out on the PS3 that I really want and are PS3 exclusives, then I might consider getting one eventually, but at the moment I'm very happy with having the 360 as my main gaming console.

November 3, 2006 - Silicon Knights, makers of Eternal Darkness, are readying the forever-in-development Too Human for the Xbox 360, as well as an unannounced title for the PlayStation 3. Speaking to the San Jose Mercury News, the company's President, Denis Dyack, says the next-generation systems are virtually identical in terms of power.

"The 360 and the PS3 are equal in power in my eyes," Dyack says. "Maybe the PS3 has more processing power. The 360 has more available memory. It's pretty much a net, net. The public perception of the PS3 was that it was much more powerful. To developers, they look even."

Silicon Knights had a working relationship with Nintendo for several years, making Eternal Darkness and Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes for the GameCube. That partnership ended in 2004, though, and Dyack says he has no current plans to develop for the Wii. Too Human is planned as a trilogy for the Xbox 360.

Maybe because the Wii continues to dominate so there's not much to talk about. One of our distributors has twelve thousand backorders for the Wii.

With the phenomenal reviews that Bioshock is getting (currently 2nd best reviewed game of all time!) I found myself checking gameranking.com's list of all Xbox 360 games and the kinds of reviews they've been getting, mostly to compare Bioshock's rating to other games I love.

I then had a peek at the same list for PS3 and Wii. And while what I discovered is obviously in huge part due to the 360 having been out a year longer than the other two, I was still pretty surprised at these numbers:

There's 54 360 games rated 80 or better.
There's 14 PS3 games rated 80 or better.
There's 7 Wii games rated 80 or better.

I figured there'd be a difference, but not that big of a one.

And if you look at 90 or better, the list is 7 for 360, 1 for PS3 and 2 for Wii.

Nuts. In a year, it'll be interesting to see if the PS3 and Wii will have the numbers the 360 has now.

Here's the URL to their rankings, just modify the dropdown menus to see the different platforms:

http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrank...asp?rankings=y

That's interesting... Does the 360 really have that many AAA exclusives? I thought most of the good games were ported to PS3 in slightly inferior but similarly rated versions.

Wii being on bottom doesn't surprise me, that console has a TON of crap on it and precisely one great game.
