I would appreciate some help on deciding what model / version I should be looking for when buying a used PS2. I came across a web site that helps identify which version number is associated with which model PS2. Mostly the site says to either buy SCPH 39001 or later "fat" machines or the slimline models. Does anyone have any firsthand knowledge on the subject or which machines they would recommend I stay away from buying?

I think if you found a site that tells you which models are best, you already have the info you need. Personally I would suggest you pay the extra $20 and get a new system, but that's just me.

Get the latest version of the fat system if you can... The slims, in my experience are hardcore pieces of crap. Never have I seen so many systems come back defective in such a short time as with those.
