Sony to sell PlayStation user data to advertisers

http://thebrowser.blogs.fortune.com/...o-advertisers/

Apparently your gaming will be tracked, sent to a third party, and then they will sent you advertisements to you based on the games you play.

C'mon captain spin, I hate Sony as much as the next guy but that article doesn't say anything like that.

It says....

"The company has agreed to let Nielsen track the behavior of PlayStation gamers to let advertisers better understand gamers’ demographics, how much time they spend on a given game, and how closely they pay attention to the product placement."

My original statement is what it sounds like to me ,afterall isnt that the point of "product placement"? Now they are just researching it more and tracking habits so the product placement is more targetted.

I think it's overblown statements like these that hurt your credibility, Ruined.

The story doesn't say anything about advertisements being sent to anybody, and there is product placement in games for the 360, so it can't be that bad, right?

[Edit: By the way, I don't think what Sony is doing is right, if this information is user identifiable in any way. If it's anonymous, then I would have no problem with that.]

I think you're taking this a little too far. Will they track what gamers do? Sure. Will you - Ruined - get an ad based on the games you play? No way. They'll take this data and figure out that guys between 15 and 30 play Madden, and market to that segment of games both in-game and through regular advertising. Doesn't Tivo already do this today?

Yes, and many other companies. You are playing on their system on their service, how would they not have a right to this information?

I don't think his statement is overblown but simply a prediction of what might happen in the future. Stuff like what he describes always starts out in the manner mentioned in the article and then goes in directions we never want them to go in.

Peace...

Tom, I think we have a responsibility to make sure that when we are predicting someting, or giving an opinion, we make it clear that it's opinion vs. fact, or in this case, a summary of what some article has said.

Again, as I said, I think it hurts his credibility. I think Ruined has a tendency to paint any Microsoft/360 article in the best light possible, and any Sony article in the worst light possible. As an admin of this forum, I feel obligated to point out when I think he crosses the line from being informative, into the area of spreading misinformation.

With the kind of data they are collecting it would easy for them to do either one.

Either way, you guys are arguing over minutia. The issue at hand is that Sony is selling your personal habits to a third party. The exact method of how they deliver the information is really irrelevant, the problem is that your data is still disclosed whether or not they send you a specific ad or your agegroup a specific ad.

Yep, I understand and agree with this and yes he probably should have indicated that was more of his personal take on things. The thing is,
  1. I don't think he's too far off the mark
  2. We generally do a poor job of doing exactly what you say we have a responsibility to do above.

Well, we'll see if he's actually spreading misinformation if his prediction becomes a headline in the papers.

Peace....

Tracking how consumers react to ads is NOTHING new... This doesn't bother me too much. It's not like they're seeing I look at condom ads and then telling Trojan my address so they can send me free samples.

If they do that I'll complain.

You'd complain about free condoms?

From what I've heard of the Playstation network and it connectivity there shouldn't be any worries. The data will be collected and more than likely it'll take so long to get to where it's intended the game the data was used for has been traded in and you'll never have to see an ad for anything.
