Do I need a warranty?

Just bought an Xbox 360 for the first time. This is my first console since the Nintendo 64. I'm very excited, hehe.

I did not have a very good place to put the unit, so I have it sitting vertically on the box it came in (instead of on the carpet) and I have the power block sitting on a shelf, that has ventilation.

I bought this unit from target, but I was wondering, do I need to buy the $50 MS warranty? Or am I safe against the 3 ring attack? I do not know much about it, since I haven't really been in the console world for a while.

Also, can anyone point me in the direction of some good games, or places to get some good deals on games? Right now I have some money saved for Halo 3 (I did not buy 2) and possibly a 12 month subscription to Xbox Live. I am borrowing Gears of War and Elder Scrolls from a friend. I'd like to get a couple more games, but I am mainly looking for online multiplayer type.

Thanks,

Sam

You don't need the warranty since MS gives you three years for free now... If you want another year or two on top of that though, feel free... but I would bet you'll be fine with the 3 year. Even if it dies then another unit will probably cost $150 by that point, maybe less.

As for games, since you're looking for online mainly we have opposite tastes, since I love mostly storylines and one player games. I will say though that Rainbow Six Vegas is awesome, online and off.

Also if you have any liking for sinlgle player at all BioShock is the best game on the 360 without question.

Wow a 3 year warranty? Not bad. I got the HDMI version of the console (non elite, so I guess it's newer). Doesn't seem to get too hot and it's very quiet.

I was playing the Bioshock demo earlier. Very very cool. I might have to get it, hehe.

Thanks again Moogle!

Well first off use that 1 month of gold you got for free before signing up for live. You have to go through the sign up process but it'll see that you are eligible for the 30 freeness. THEN after that get the yearly gold subscription. It's probably the best $50 I spend all year besides buying food..... and electricity.......and water.

The best games on the 360 for multiplay

#1 no question, undeniably - Rainbow six Vegas. Also as Moog said great single player mode too.

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2

Gears of War is a must have if you like shooters.

Madden 08 is much improved over passed years.

For single player greatness -

Bioshock without a doubt.

After that every thing else seems trivial.

I like guitar hero 2 and any number of X Box live arcade games.

Dude. How could you leave out Oblivion for your must have games? Blasphemy! Get oblivion to.

You should be fine with Microsoft warranty especially since I assume your system has new architecture in it. Anyway to confirm guys?

Call of Duty 2 has both an excellent single player campaign as well as good online play. CoD 4 is coming down the pipeline (tentative release date is Nov 5th) so you should be able to get CoD 2 for cheap now.

Halo 3 is coming out on the 25th of this month and is sure to kick all kinds of ass.

If you like racing sims, Forza 2 can't be beat. It has good offline and online play.

Oblivion is an excellent offline game. If you like non-linear RPGs that is.

Other than that I can echo the recommendations for Gears of War and Rainbow Six: Vegas as good online shooters.

Oh, and Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter is also a great online and offline tactical shooter. I haven't played the sequel, but I hear it's similar.

CO-OP in Vegas was especially fun.

Thanks guys for the suggestions! I think I am going to buy an extra controller and battery (since I have 1 play and charge kit) and i'm going to get Rainbow 6 Vegas.

Would you say that you have more fun with that game then Gears of War?

I am also going to get Halo 3 when it comes out. I think that'll be it for a while. Maybe around christmas i'll get some other games. My friend is going to let me borrow Bioshock for a little bit as well.

Thanks again guys!

I would say with R6V there are more ways to get to your end objective. Gears is fun don't get me wrong but RS is more free. If you like you enemies unpredictable try terrorist hunt.

Gears is fun to go through co-op.

Oh and I didn't forget Oblivion I've just never played it. Not a huge RPG fan at least not ones that look like they take place in a World of Warcraft type of place. I like mine sci fi, bring on Mass Effect.

My short answer is a resounding NO. For me, Gears of War is by far a lot more fun, both in single player and multiplayer, than Rainbow Six: Vegas. Especially single player. I found the RB6:V single player campaign to be pretty cookie cutter and boring with a been-there-done-that feeling throughout.

That said, while GoW offers both fresher gameplay mechanics and a unique storyline, RB6:V is a much more traditional shooter both in story and gameplay, so if that's what you're after RB6:V may be for you after all.

But on my own personal must-have list, GoW is ranked multiple slots above RB6:V.

If you can't afford to get both (they're definitely worthy purchases) rentals of both titles may be in order.

Bought Rainbow 6 and Project Gotham Racing 3 used today. The PGR3 disc looked superb, but the RB6 one looked a little scratched up. I guess i'm so used to HD DVDs playback with scratched disc that I assumed the worst. My friend came over and we played a bunch of co-op missions. RB6 is a lot of fun! Man I haven't played a tactical shooter like this in quite a while. We played for a couple hours and enjoyed it quite a bit.

PGR3, I don't know yet. We played some street races and it was kind of hard. I can't really complain though for getting a full game for $10 with online features. Any tips?

I downloaded Aegis (I think that is it's name) and that's a pretty cool arcade game. I was thinking about getting Small Arms, but $10 is kind of expensive for an arcade game.

Also, I was wondering, is there a way to clean the lens of my projector? I was thinking of using my eye glasses cleaner cloth (there is no solution on it, it's just a very fine/silky cloth). Do I need to use something different? There seems to be quite a bit of dust on the lens of the projector (I seemt o have a very dust room).

Thanks again guys!

Oh, Astrakan, any tips for GoW? I've been playing that online and I seem to be the slowest kid on the block. Should I play through the single player first and then go to online?

I think I have 60 achievement points now. I'm really liking the interface and how it works. Plus having 5.1 surround is great. I am having more fun than I should be, hehe.

I think you made a good call with Rainbow... Gears is good but way overrated in my opinion.

Project Gotham you just need to get used to the way it handles... skid through those turns!

You should always play a game off line first before jumping online. Get the controls and game play down the jump in with the real AI. Or at least that what some of the idiots seem like online, AI.

You will have fun with Rainbow, but for different reasons. they are both good games. The thing I loved about Gears was I felt like i was in a movie. It seemed so cinematic. The music really made it climatic in many parts. It was a different experience than Vegas. Vegas I really enjoyed playing with a buddy. The single player I wasn't as in to.

Offline before going online is definitely a good idea, just to get the basics down. With regards to being slow... have you mastered roadie run?

Glad to make you laugh, but that's what it's called according to the manual.

Yeah roadie run is a good way to get from point a to point b also a good way to get hung up on cover and make yourself a target.

And yeah thats what it's called in the manual and the game calls it that in the "tutorial" in the beginning of the game.

Yeah but I still get hung up on cover areas. It didn't completely fix it it just made it less sensitive I think. However I'm a big wuss so where ever theres a place to hide that where you can find me.

Weird. I rarely get stuck. I think we must use it differently. Is your tactic to generally roadie run along walls? If so, I can see how that may increase your chance of getting stuck. I tend to only roadie run in open areas, to get from cover to cover, but not along walls or short distances.

Well like I said I'm a coward so generally yeah I'm running close to stuff. I know what happens when I do that but yet I continue to do it.
