Games and disc capacity...

Kind of software specific but also hardware related...

So, in THIS interview with Ryan Peyton (one of the producers of MGS4) the topic of the of Blu-Ray's necessity for MGS4 was brought up.

Peyton's response:
Quote:
"...the fact remains that we couldn't do what we're doing on MGS4 without Blu-Ray."
He then goes on to discuss how Blu-Ray's size really benefits their use of in game cinematics and uncompressed sound (along with discussing how freakin' awesome this game will be).

Now, I know that a vast majority games to this point have no need for such a large storage capacity, but with the increasingly cinematic direction being taken by a lot more games and the trend towards better and better production values (including lossless sound) how long might it be before we start to see limitations in DVD storage capacity becoming an issue? And more importantly, how will developers cope...multiple discs, add-on peripherals (a la the HD-DVD add-on for the 360)?

That being said, MGS4 is not your run of the mill game and Konami and Kojima are really taking things to extremes to make this the "premier system seller" that it really needs to be so they may be going a bit "overboard" (depending of you POV...I, personally, am all for it).

However, I still think that the question of capacity will become increasingly valid especially for systems not employing either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray based media.

The important thing to note in this debate is that the space isn't NEEDED... that's what people like Ruined will say, no game NEEDS that space, so making the consumer pay more for it is unjustified.

However no one should say it isn't BENEFICIAL to have it. More space is good, and the benefits of it can be seen in many PS3 titles, be it uncompressed audio or longer, less comrpessed and beautiful HD movies and cinemas in the games. Some developers have commented they would have to cut features to fit on a DVD, like Bizzare and Project Gotham Racing, they had to cut daytime changes in-course because they couldn't fit the seperate textures, or in Unreal Tournament where the 360 version will have less maps. Word is the lack of an HDD and the small DVD size of the game is hurting both GTA4 and Assassin's Creed.

Is it NEEDED? No. Is it GOOD? Yes.
