Its a protein-folding simulation that originally started out on computers and now has worked its way to many platforms (including PS3).
In short, they are trying to cure diseases by using a distributed computing project that would take a single computer eons to run, but with millions of computers running it broken up into bits then reassembled stuff can be accomplished in a lot shorter time. If interested, you can download a copy and run it on your PC here (requires active net connection to run): http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandeg...ng@Home503.EXE Installation instructions: http://folding.stanford.edu/English/WinGraphicInstall However, be warned that it will stress your CPU which may result in hotter temperatures and/or more noise coming out of the case. More info on what this program accomplishes here: http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Science http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Papers

The whole voiding warranty because of dust thing on PS3 is ridiculous - you can't avoid dust, it will accumulate no matter what. Its even more ridiculous when stuff like Folding@Home (which of course will stress the system 24/7 and hence cause more air & dust to flow through it) comes installed stock on the machine by Sony. If Sony didn't want to deal with increased dust due to this program, they shouldn't have installed it on the hard drive from the factory.

You do have a choice to run the software or not. I tried it out but decided to cancel. Just didn't get what they were trying to accomplish. My Ps3 does get dusty, than again so does every other component I have under my tv.

Also, 360 has been out a full year longer than PS3. We'll see how PS3 reliability is doing in a year - if dust causes the console to die (i.e. early fan death) over time - then the PS3 is destined for the same fate as 360 was before its HDMI revision (which fixed the mobo design issue).

I admire the Folding @ Home program, but I don't leave my PS3 on all the time, so I don't use it. But, I do leave my laptop on pretty much 24/7, so I have SETI @ Home running on it. I'm gonna finds me an ET.
