Switching an Xbox

I work with a girl who about the Halo Edition 360 over the weekend. She was telling me

"I bought a 360 this weekend but its the stupid Halo edition, its ugly." So naturally i chime in and say "wanna trade that for my white one?" She's going to ask her boyfirend if he'll switch, i doubt it'll happen but ya never know.

Now my question is: Is it possible to switch xboxs and still maintain a warranty or does it void it? I ask because she got a warranty from Best Buy for it and I got the 3 rings of death in july and got back a refurbed unit. So should I just go for it if she's willing to switch and worry about it later or what not?

Thanks

The manufacture date is on the box, so that's all you need for warranty I think.. three years from the manufacture date on the console.

You will lose the right to play all your XBL content offline though, so you know.

Not if it is offline. You have to be connected with Xbox Live to be able to play your arcade games. If your not connected it will only let you play the trial version. It has something to do with the crappy DRM of Microsofts. However, if you buy any new games being connected with the new console and old hard drive you don't have to be online for the full versions to work.

XBOX Live Arcade games and bought Live Marketplace content are tied to your machine's serial # primarily, not your hard drive. This is to allow portability of data while preventing piracy. So you will need to be signed in to XBOX Live to play them on a different machine. Microsoft is able to change this on their end but it requires much jumping through hoops and they are very reluctant to do so.

In my discussions with Amir I continue to offer the feedback that they need to offer the end user a way to change the "home base" console once every 3-6 months with this sort of DRM system to accomodate upgrades & repairs, and he has communicated that he continues to relay the feedback to the XBOX team. But they seem quite rigid on their current DRM system unless your console breaks and you either get it fixed through them or can prove it is broken - then they will hook you up (often automatically). There is also a large complaint thread on the XBOX forum which I pointed him to. Honestly I think the current system is approaching grounds for a class action lawsuit - it is too restrictive and does not offfer the user enough control.

I have maybe one map for GOW and some trial versions of games but have never bought or spent MS points so should I be in the clear if switching becomes available?

Can someone explain DRM to me?

DRM is like owning something except not.

If you've never bought anything don't worry about it.

DRM is Digital Rights Management... it means you didn't buy the actual movie/game, just a license or "right" to play that movie or game in certain situations.

Like, you didn't buy Spider-Man 3, you bought a copy of it on a DVD you are only allowed to watch in a DVD player without charging anyone else money to see it.

DRM is attached to everything you buy from the Xbox Marketplace, it "brands" a game to your system. If you play something you bought on a different system you have to be online and signed into your profile to prove it's the person who paid for the content, not someone else. You didn't really buy the game entirely, you bought the right to play it with the profile you used.

In any case, as Ruined said, if you didn't buy anything for your 360 through the marketplace it doesn't really matter, there are no DRM issues to worry about.

and thanks Ruined, I didn't really know what DRM was and your post didn't make sense but now it does.
