Wii Back in the Game after 7 years

Back in the Game:
Since the year 2000 I have not owned a console game and that was the original Playstation. That was the year I became a parent and started using a Mac instead of a PC so my gaming time was limited and so was my hardware. So my kids wanted a Wii for Christmas and I have purchased one and I am as well as my wife are "testing" it after the kids go to bed. The only game I have now is Wii sports and It is Awesome. I played tennis in high school as well in jr college and I used to bowl quite a bit so this was worth the price just with wii sports. My kids want bratz and shreck the third and other kids game. Dad and Mom on the other hand want Metroid Prime 3 , Resident Evil games, Mario titles and some virtual console games.
So now I am setting up my Gamefly Account and wonder what I should play first I think Metroid Prime 3 but I would like to know how FPS are on the wii with the control scheme. I have on played FPS on my Mac and I was wondering how difficult is the transition between Keyboard and Mouse to the Wiimote and Knumchuck. Thanks

Metroid's awesome controls are actually the only thing good about the Wii in my opinion, so... they're pretty good.

Wow, Moogleporn doesn't like the Wii. Next thing you know Ruined will be backing the XBOX 360.

Well I'm not a fanboy of either one (I don't think Moogle is either) but he came to the realization (as did I) that the Wii is very cool to begin with and then it loses its luster after awhile. It is very gimmicky and most games do not have that much depth to them. Especially non Nintendo games. I've found Moogles posts to be much more open minded. If a game is good on the Wii, PS3, or Xbox 360 he gives it props.

However, welcome back to gaming, Zepplongfellow!! I got rid of my Wii before Metroid came out but I heard the controls were decent for it. Definitely Resident Evil is fun, as well as the Mario game I hear. In fact your kids probably will like Mario Galaxy.

I own all three so I don't really care. I just thought it was funny.

I will say that the Wii is in a totally different league and I for one like the fact that they have at least tried to inovate and not just put out a prettier shooter. In 5 years we'll all be either thanking them or condeming them for opening up the market to the masses.

It's not the masses I'm concerned about, it's the signal the success of the Wii is sending Microsoft and Sony.

After owning a Wii for a while now I've come to the same conclusion as Moogle and billnye, and I would hate for the gaming industry as a whole to follow the path Nintendo is forging with the Wii.

Innovation is one thing, innovation at the expense of gameplay and immersion is another entirely.

I thought I should post a follow-up to my previous entry.

I don't at all mean to rain on Zepp's parade. For me personally I could never have the Wii as my only console, but for someone who's getting back in the saddle after a while I think it can be very worthwhile.

Not only does it have some pretty fun games, especially for a family (or any group) to enjoy, but there's also the virtual console which has plenty to offer. In addition, I'm really enjoying the Everybody Votes channel as well as the new Check Mii Out channel.

And then there's the entire Gamecube library as well.

So yeah, welcome back to the fold Zepp. I hope you enjoy your new acquisition.

I doubt either. The Wii will more than likely be as forgettable as the Gamecube. Gimmicky controllers are not innovation. My room mate has a Wii and it gets very very very little use. Nintendo could actually develop a console that would appeal to people other than the ones looking for the cheap way into the "next gen" (which the Wii is not), but they don't. They keep putting out kid friendly consoles and put out just enough half decent Mario games to get the older nostalgia bunch to bite.

I have no idea what demographic you and your room mate fall into but if you are of the hard core gamer variety of course it gets very little use. It's aimed at casual gamers and kids, which is a perfect fit for a family. I don't think it's selling because it's cheap, that helps but I think it's selling because a whole bunch of people that grew up on the old NES and SNES now have kids and want something that they can play with their kids that is G rated.

On the controller I don't think it's as gimmicky as you think. For the hardcore gamer, yes, but if someone like my Mom can pick up a controller and play a game like bowling with some sort of proficiency then it's a miraculous breakthrough sent from the gods themselves. (the Atari 2600 joystick had too many buttons for my Mom)

p.s. I set a reminder in outlook for 2012, prepare for an "in your face, I was right" in five years.

Doubt it. The Gamecube stalled out the door for its lack of competition with the other consoles. So what does nintendo do, decides not to compete directly by going into an untouched market, motion gaming. While i could never have it for my primary system, there are some fun games to be had by all. Can't wait for Smash Brothers. The Wii will be long remembered just for taking the first steps.

Towards what? I see the Wii being like all other Nintendo systems. Hardly any third party support while having some stellar first party titles. This is the first time in my life that a Mario platformer came out and I could care less. I just am expecting more from my videogames now a days.

Again, I don't think you (assuming you are a hardcore gamer) are their target so they don't care that you don't care. They are however kicking ass in sales and I believe they will continue to do so because the demographic they are targeting is much larger than that of the xbox and ps3.

Believe me, I appreciate the evolution of the graphics and game play, I've been playing since the days of pong. But even for myself as I get older I have less and less time for games. I just want something quick and fun that I can play for 15 minutes or half an hour. I don't have time to set up a profile and do career mode etc. Also, some of the control schemes are complicated and I forget when I go back to the game 2 months later so I can see how that may frustrate the casual gamer. I hate to use the bowling example again but if someone like my mom can pick up the Wii controller and make the basic bowling swing and hit the button to release the ball it's friggin' magic. Now if it was the exact same game with an xbox controller where you had to hit the button to get the power meter going and then somehow set up a spin on the ball and then hit the button when the power meter hit a line or something she would never play. With the Wii all of those things are intuitive.

That's a shame that you don't care about Super Mario Galaxy as you're missing out on not only the best game on the Wii so far but also the best Mario title since 64. Your loss!

I have a Wii which I love but I'm still contemplating picking up a 360 or PS3 as I'm just drooling over a lot of the titles that are showing up. Online is what I'm interested in and too few Wii titles are utilising that at the moment.

Just like I am waiting for some of my favorite ps3 titles to come out eventually, I am doing the same for the wii. There will be some Nintendo games that I will definitely want, and keeping the wii around for those will be worthwhile.

And while you hear about some Wii's sitting after the initial buzz wore off, I think that mainly has applied to more hardcore gamers, which is again not Nintendo goal audience.

This is exactly why I quit with the last XBox and picked up a Wii. It is easy and most moves on Mario Galaxy can be accomplished in 3 button moves or less. Like a lot of other gamers I found control schemes too complicated and career modes too long. So far everyone in my family has played the Wii including my 72 year old father and they all like it. Now will they all buy one. No. At first I bought one and found like Reaver I had buyers remorse but I have picked up a few titles that I really enjoy. It's easy to pick up and play for half an hour or 45 minutes and put it down then come back in a week or so and just start playing again without a refresher course. Over at AVS there is a thread going on about how old are you. A lot of the people posting in the thread are mid 30's and up that are once again enjoying video games. Yes there are older and younger gamers out there. People my age were raised on Atari 2600's and it had an eight position joystick and 1 button. SImple can be fun.

That's my thought's...

Best game on the Wii isn't really saying much considering the next best game is Wii Sports.

Yesterday in the Cleveland Plain Dealer they had a front page article about the Wii and how it is a hit at the Senior Centers. Pretty crazy that a videogame system is making the front page of a big cities newspaper. They were stating that bowling was the biggest hit with them. Here is a link to the Cleveland.com online version of it.
